Man, if I knew scripting, it'd be great to make a simple TD3 > Normal2mix converter
Would be excellent indeed, but even as it is, it lets me make use of TD3. So a belated thanks v much! :)
Looking at it again, I should expand the shader to make sure it covers bump and displacement. Mm.
Any turtle camels around? will? Anybody?
Good work on the lightning and posing! I kind of miss a dramatic wintery sky though.
Keep them coming!
You can convert Iray HDRs and similar to 3DL skydomes. Like, make a sphere, put a HDR in the ambient, set it to cast no shadows, bam.
Granted, a 32 bit image for 3DL is a bit silly; I usually downsample it to a 8 bit png first and make sure I'm using depth camera.
Another option is that I frequently convert https://www.daz3d.com/iray-skydome-super-pak to 3DL. Works just as well, just have to convert the skydome, make sure the image is in the ambient and switch Cast Shadows to Off. Bam.
The 'Iray only' steakhouse converted to 3dl, thanks to Esemy's Irayto3DL converter, which is awesome. Also uses Reflective Radiance for general lighting and on the lightbulbs, added some post work for a little bloom.
(I should have followed my previous post's advice and used an Iray Skydome converted, but hey)
Wow, that is amazing!!!
Is that a distant light shining through the windows plus emissive ceiling lights?
Yep! RR3 'dusk' or something similar to get the distant and bounce light, and then Marshian's RR3 emissive shaders on the bulbs.
Closeup of the Medicine Woman, a fair bit of kitbashing and the RR3 reflective light, UE2 and a dz distant light:
And the same render heavily postprocessed, inspired by the books of Carlos Castaneda, that might be familiar to some of you:

Cloudless everyday you fall upon my waking eyes
Inviting and inciting me to rise
I just adore the Enchanted Forest. Such a lush environment.
Here it is with Reflective Radiance and a jaguar.
Some mild post work to change tonal balance. I often like to do more postwork for camera effects or paint, but I wanted to highlight how good 3dl can be in the realm of realism.
I was inspired to take another look at my Normal2Mix shader and will be releasing an improved version to Sharecg, with probably a few (free) textures and presets to start people off.
Among other things I realized that one problem I was having with it was that it was using the Plastic lighting system, which... looked terrible for most things. I switched it to Matte.
Here's a test with TD3 maps and the improved Normal2Mix shader.
Really nice, good sense of depht
Testing out the Normal2Mix Matte shader. Should be packing this up with some textures for sharecg over next few days; the maps in this case are mine to distribute. (Will also provide a snowy preset)
The sky is from Iray Skydomes, which I find convert pretty easily to make for high quality 3DL skydomes.
Note that the way TD3 works, mesas like that tend to get some vertical stretching. Not sure there's any way around that, although I might make a version of this with my procedurals. Hrm.
Another variation. Pretty happy.
Carlos Castaneda!!! Well, that takes me back a bit. I don't think I've heard that name for about 40 years.
Very trippy image, and very appropriate style.
Nice contrast between the skin tones and the blue and white of the sky and set. I always think blues and browns (of any shade) go really well together. I like the posing of the hands and expression
TY very much timeoff, this hobby is my controlled folly I think.
"A warrior must know first that his acts are useless, and yet, he must proceed as if he didn't know it".
...nice setting. My only small critique is the sy looks too dark, like how it would appear flying 60,000 - 70,000'
https://www.daz3d.com/japanese-maples with use of my new, free, terrain shader. (Ok, mainly designed for terrains but does a bang-up job on snow cover)
(Also Reflective Radiance, which you can probably just assume for all my future 3dl posted here. ;)
More random stuff (RR3):
...cute. Nicely done.
Noggin's Duck & Ducklings?
Thank you!
Yep, just picked them up, look surprisingly good even close up.
It's not silly, at all. Especially if you use bounce and do not exclude the skydome. Just make sure your tracing distance is higher than the dome radius.
timeoff, Sven Dullah - so many cute animals! Awesome! =)
Actually...3DL doesn't mind 32 bit HDR images at all...probably they should be preferred.
I don't know where folks get the idea that 3DL is something archaic or not capable of anything. 3DL had the ability to use HDR/EXR images directly long before it was actually stated here...and that means in Studio! Even when people were still fretting over how to convert them for UberEnvironment. Yeah...a long time.
What I meant is that the dynamic range is probably going to be wasted if you aren't generating a 32 bit image. It MIGHT be worth doing for IBL, but I suspect not, in most cases
