...humpty hump day on the way to a three day weekend.

Starting off with a Non Complaint (even though part of the workday sucked small planetoids).

Seems persistence and a little "buttering up" pays off. Entered another Support ticket with Antec explaining thefact that I have been unable to reach them on the phone number they gave me (Always find myself 4th in the call queue that seems to last forever - well at least longer than my lunch break allows for). Mentioned that I originally purchased the case because I liked (I really do) as it included features like superior cooling, lots of interior space, was well constructed and had a "professional" look. Well today I received a notice today that the missing drive rails are being shipped and should arrive in the next week or so. So F-I-N-A-L-L-Y, will be able to break the surly bonds of 32 bit and leave all the crashes I've endured over the last couple years behind.

12GB, OK compared to some rigs today that may not seem like a lot, but considering I only have about 1.3 G of available RAM to render with at present (after the application and scene take their share), it will feel like going from a Yugo to a Maserati GranTurismo.

    ...OK, one complaint...

Seems that the manager of the digital print department feels that the best method of training me is to not train me in the department's procedures and let me fail first then tell me I screwed up and how to do it right. Yeah, that is a real confidence builder. I'm expected to just pick everything up on my own, in particular seemingly "ever changing" procedures for a very, very, very, picky client (while still having to manage the monthly billing, job setup, and imprint operations for our firm's oldest and most important account).

...and do it all in an 8 hour day with no overtime allowed.

...I need to win that Megabucks Lotto tonight (and yes I did buy a ticket).

    Complaint:

My main server's /home RAID partition crapped out and suddenly made a this-makes-no-sense roll back to May.

I think I have lost about a year of my life due to the scare it gave me.

But my data is now rescued, and I'm recovering the RAID array, so one way or another this is getting fixed.

Momma needs retail therapy reaaaaaaal bad tonight.

'Media Recover' is a great recovery software even for reformatted drives. I've saved soooo many assignments and photos with that program.

Mmm, this is Linux RAID I'm working on right now, and the problem would be potential overwriting of the actual data with old crap, which would render data rescue methods moot.

    More detailed explanation:

I have a basic mirroring RAID (RAID 1) for /home partition. Member partitions are /dev/sda5 and /dev/sdb5; this means data gets copied to another, live, in case of catastrophic disc failure. Basically, if one disc fails, I can boot off the other one and get my stuff back.

Something crapped out at some point after system upgrade, and sda5 never began to mirror content from sdb5 some time in May. Despite my setup being set up in a manner that it sends me alarms, it never did.

Now that I did a new small update, and rebooted the system, the RAID system got its knickers into twist, and refused to boot up both and do what it was set up to do -- it brought up only /dev/sda5 and declared sdb5 as unclean heretic to be shunned. Considering how sdb5 is where actual, most recent data lives, this was chilling.

Since it was a software RAID member, I could not mount it with the usual commands. So I got an idea and rebooted the system from Linux install disc to rescue mode, in read-only mode so nothing would get overwritten.

Ta-dah! Now, for some BIZARRE and UNFATHOMABLE reason, Linux went "Oh, sdb5 looks like it has most recent stuff on it, why don't I bring it up for ya" and I was able to rescue my data from it. Because there's a real chance that if I don't do that in read-only mode, it would start furiously mirroring content, which would mean new content gets overwritten by old. And then it is bye-bye to real data.

    So, yeah.

Yeah. And it was a situation that really did not make any sense and it scared the dickens out of me.

Thankfully, it is all fixed now and all I lost was some minimal user data (couple of pictures and text files) from the last 24 hours (and users have been told to keep their own backups, I backup only stuff they can't access but use on regular basis, like forums and wikis).

I always used to have conniption fits and palpitations when rebuilding broken mirrors and re-establishing Business Continuance Volumes, trying not to out-think myself as to which command to use to make the mirror/link work in the right direction ... ;) Mind you, that was only live government department data, so no biggie ... ;)

Thursday! 2 more days to vacation, wheeeee! Let the SLACKING BEGIN!

Now that I have my Panasonic Lumix camera, and my armature wire FINALLY arrived, I can do some serious work. I'm going to start with a tentacle monster, then snakes, then maybe a fish or two (loaches, anyone). Learning time!

Woke up sleepy, feh. Blasted out of a dream by the alarm, that means I'll be iffy all day. Feh.

At least my apple wood and pecan wood liquid smoke arrived, so now I can do some fancy bbq-ing! Going to get a rack of ribs on Sunday, then Monday slow-cook it.. 1/2 using an apple wood marinade, 1/2 using pecan wood. Let the munching begin!

Payday, but rent week s 85% of the money is spent. There's enough left for a few vacation treats, but that's about it. Definitely enough for a Godzilla film festival! :snake:

Coffee.. must have coffee. And the office coffee is crap. Feh.

Yeah, I only recently caught up with CS5 for Photoshop and Illustrator. But only because of their new policy limiting how many levels they are upgradeable from. Used to be 3 or 4 levels back, now you have to have CS5 if you hope to get upgrade pricing for CS6 :-( I quickly upgraded just before CS6 came out because I read of their new policy. I used to skip a couple of levels before plunking down $$$ for an upgrade. Now I have to keep a close eye on their upgrades and decide if it's worth running to catch the upgrade train. (bah humbug!)

However regarding half price offers... Except for educational discount neither Adobe nor any of their authorized resellers is in the habit of ever offering any more than about 20% off any of their flagship products, especially the latest suite. :-o So... I'm suspicious everytime I see a mail or web offer too good to be true. Not to say that someone hasn't hijacked a truckload of official Adobe products and is selling them under the counter at below market prices, or that someone has semi-successfully "warzed" one of Adobe's products that may bite you in the ass when you go to upgrade someday. But I'm curious to hear who is selling for that price and whether the product actually ever arrived and licenced itself properly.

The Adobe educational discount is a good thing. But the license agreement is restrictive and you're supposed to provide some proof that you qualify. If you are already taking graphics classes it's a super deal. However, if you have to spend $700 for a class just to get educational discount, then spending another $250 for the Adobe product seems counter productive unless you really get a lot of benefit from the class.

Welp, all I know is that I gave couple of my users some heart-racing problems, and entertained a bunch of Linux geeks who tried to figure out WTH had happened and how this is gonna get fixed. I think I was totally saved by sheer dumb luck that the system booted the fresher partition...

    Photoshop = luxury motorhome

PS Elements = Dodge camper van

Both provide transportation, room & board. Which is best depends on your comfort needs.

Heh, quite apt. Well, given I "camp" rarely, and very simply, the fancy motorhome is overkill. Sure, if I had the $$$$$ I'd drive it, but I'm ot rich so it's the camper van.

Fancy postwork on pics of my home studio and lame sculptures is kind of.. erm.. a waste of time. :red: I think PSE is even good enough to clean up basic photos of myself! :bug:

Feh.. office coffee. Tastes like carbon dust in hot water, with powdered linoleum. My instant at home is better! I'm going to have to start bringing in my own coffee.. feh! And the boss won't authorize the purchase of an espresso machine, the bugger! :vampire:

Always so nice to have piles of extra storage hanging around your shop. After many "oh f'k" experiences when I was young and brave and incredibly stupid I now never attempt unrepairable operations without first at least attempting to have a full and complete backup if possible. Paraphrasing the Cowardly Lion. "I do believe in Murphy, I do, I do believe in Murphy."

However, I still like to tell the assembled grandkiddies about the time when I had a friend who worked for a major Aerospace corporation in Florida and heard through the grapevine that the removable disk drive holding corporate records became corrupted. (This was in the 1970s so a removable disk was the size of small car wheel) So my friend pulled the backup disk from the safe and put it in the drive. Hmmm..., it too was corrupted. So instead of investigating why two supposedly good disks suddenly went bad in the same drive, he pulled the super backup out of the safe and put it into the same drive and yes, you know what happened, it too was now completely corrupted. Corporate records had to be completely re-entered by hand from the original paper records after the disk drive with the recording head that was scratching the disks was replaced. (No, it wasn't me but it was a real situation and he was a friend of mine.)

I'm going to complain, cos I was just going to reply to that post which isn't there any more, but I will rpely to the one that is still there anyway.

If Murphy's law had really sprung into action, when the went to the oldfashioned file room to get the otginal paper records they would have found that the Washroom on the next floor up had sprung a leak, which had meant that liquid was seeping through the ceiling and corrupting the paper back up.

And yes I did oce work in a building where the paper file storage was on the ground floor, and right below the washrooms and Toilet faclities, and it WAS of course the latter that was blocked, causing the leakage

Serious. FYI, nothing eats circuit boards like cat piss. It is like aqua regia for it. And since she was soft on kitties, yes, the furball lived after that...

...we, on the other hand, had to try and salvage something out of the mess.
