Random question and kind of off-topic... but how are you guys liking Genesis 9, so far? Cuz I'm not...

Doesn't do anything worth investing in over G8. G8 seemed to be a bit of a pinnacle in terms of features, ease of use, and availibility of assets. I wish they'd never even done 8.1, which just throws weird compatibilty issues into my work flow for no reason or appreciable gain.

Victoria 9 and Nathan 9 have very impressive faces. So have Dylan, Phx Kade, Aurore, Aniyah ... for G8. And Victoria and Russel and ... for G3.

I don't like the shoulders and pectorals of Genesis 9, and the missing nipples and navels (HD morphs only). In real life, 9x % of the males and females have a gender specific body. The unisex base character is a step into the wrong direction IMHO. In real life, most of the clothes are not unisex, either.

Because they made the base with breasts, previous generation's male clothes don't always play well with G9. Detailed, realistic men's clothing is rare, so that's a deal breaker on top of creases and overly defined cleavage and underbreast line you get with male characters.

I'm afraid G9 just isn't to my taste. I can't get past they way the shoulder and chest areas look-especially for the men. In fact for my eye, G9's body just looks soft and rubbery.. Hopefully, DAZ will go back to separate base meshes for G10 otherwise I'll be sticking with G8 for a LONG time.

I gave g9 a go. Don't care for the real world proportions, the pecs, the coat hanger shoulders, and the undefined torso which looks doughy on the men. The unisex base does masculine characters no favors as everything seems to skew feminine from brows, to the long necks without adams apples, to the shape of the hands. Clothing fits higher on the waist since it's designed for genesis 9 female. And there is something odd about the chin and nose.  Even the poses  feel off to me.

Genesis 9 male also lacks content. Limite facial hair packs, brow packs, and no underwear besides what came in the basics. It's very underserved content-wise.

I should add I bought a ton of it, thinking it would be okay once I got enough morphs and content, but he main issues I have with it remained.  just didn't care for the end result.

Even though I have been using G9 a lot, I will agree that a lot of the characters (male in particular) look "doughy".

I don't disagree about needing more masculine G9 content, but there are several beard products. If they aren't to your taste that's totally valid, but they definitely exist? More brow options will be great though.

Some characters come with facial hair, and there are a couple beard products, but they aren't particularly comprehensive. I agree they do exist though. I should have phrased that differently.

Mec4D's beard for G2M is still probably my favorite beard set. I don't know how well it would work on G9.

Product Suggestion: "next level converter" for everything added to g9 figures.
Upfront disclosure: Am happy for those who like and support the new G9. Not for me though.

Issue: MMX converter works well for many parts of clothes - thanks MattyManx (and Catherine very indirectly) for that,

        But doesn't work
-with rigid follow items, like buttons (is a 2nd follower mesh of sorts)
-nor for some (or maybe alot?) of footwear. Distortion issues.  Only did one.  Though felt like deja-vue G3toG8.
-a prop fitted to head. Had to reposition, though notably doesn't go through MMX autfit option, as just setup as a prop.
That's list so far what i had from 5x g9 outfits owned and converted so far.
And several of outfits i like have rigid follow nodes. Will sadly avoid now.

Didn't try hair, and trick of just parent to head, meh, not sure there aren't trade-offs with that, as opposed to proper fit.  Usually is.

And as for updating each outfit manually for issues above, and that after converting each skirt, top, separately, well,
----It's too much work on top of everything else to do in DS.---
MMX worked well for many things, but that extra work, for outfits i like, don't want to deal with that.
May still be odd outfit worth the extra work.

I've definitely been using G8 facial hair too with mixed results to fill in some of the gaps. Just want to make sure people aren't missing what is there since the store doesn't have a way to split G9 categories into more masculine or feminine hair/clothes/poses, or at least not that I've seen!

For those that wanted to know how Mec4D's Unshaven for G2M looks on G9:

Character is Nathan 70%/Ivan 40%/Thimor 30%. There are three separate instances of the Unshaven beard used here - one is the brown Homeless Beard at 51% using Chevybabe25's Backlight shaders (cutout opacity .70). The hair on the beard is set to Fine-Hair 46%. For the gray, I duplicated the brown beard, added a platinum blonde shader from Chevybabe's Backlight, reset the beard shape and dialed in the Soul Patch, then hid the stubble. I did the same thing as the soul patch with yet another instance and dialed in just the Sideburns (hide the stubble).

It does show its age a little bit but if you thin the hairs it doesn't look too bad and if it looks too "sparse" you can double the beard and dial your beards in a little different on each and it'll make it look thicker. Looks better than some other beards I have for later figures actually ;)

Agree with the shoes and hat. I used the Eldritch Seeker HD for Genesis 9 | Daz 3D on a Genesis 8 male, but combined the HL Derby Shoe for Genesis 8 and 8.1 Males | Daz 3D and the hat from Detective Poses and Props | Daz 3D as replacements for the G9 items.

I use my favorite beard product, Beard Boss, on G9 no prob -

Also use vellus hair made for G8/8.1 as well as body hair made for G3.

So far, I haven't come across anything that made me start to second guess stickin with the 8 train

  • MasterstrokeMasterstroke Posts: 1,983

Thing is, I have every hair, every cloth I need for Genesis 8. That means, shopping for G8 is over.
Genesis 9 is no option, because she/he is not matching my needs at all.
That means, except for environment tools or sceneries, I think, I'm pretty much done.

Ok. Sounds sensible to me, @Masterstroke

I'm glad to see some other people here using the term "doughy" to describe G9. I used that word early on and took a lot of flak for it. But that's the best description I can give for a lot of the bodies. And I don't mean doughy as in "overweight," I mean it as "looks like dough."

Also, "coat hanger shoulders" is a great term for what I've seen. I didn't know how to describe it until now. Thanks.

But yeah, so far, G9's best feature has been that it has curbed my spending because I have not yet seen much in G9 that was worth picking up. And the compatibility issues to use G9 products on older gen characters is just frustrating enough to make me second guess buying any new clothes or accessories even when they look great.

A good example for the "doughy" body shape is Genghis Khan. Picked him up yesterday with the 50% spring discount, because the face is one of the best male faces of Genesis 9 so far.

But the body? Like a sumo.

Plenty of people have similar body shape. He's not a supermodel, but very much like Freja 9 he's believable as a real world Medieval fighter... Or a Mongolian wrestler.

I'd complain about G9 core characters default reddish skin tone, but that's something fixable with skin settings. Besides, it started before with G8.1.

Weird limb bends are different thing, so far G9 works as a base for body shapes with more fat tissue, but starts having problems with more defined physiques. That's a downside.

Sumo?  That's hilarious.  He'd get his ass kicked in a real sumo fight with how skinny he is.  That's a real world body shape.  Hardly a Sumo shape!  LOL

Certainly more people are shaped like Genghis Khan 9 than, say, Michael 8.

Random question and kind of off-topic... but how are you guys liking Genesis 9, so far? Cuz I'm not...

I've manually converted many of my favorite previous generation shapes (mostly heads from G1, G2, G3, and G8) to G9 with some ease. Now I don't have to do twice the work to give either sex a vaguely similar face. It was always a pain with separate M/F bases and having to line them up trying to dial spin approximations.

I make a lot of chesty beefy dudes, and haven't had much of a problem with the pecs. But like I said, I've converted a couple of my favorite shapes from G8M, so I don't feel like I'm missing anything shape-wise other than radically different styles of toon characters. I'm on my phone right now, but I want 3D anime characters that are similar style to the ones in the Trigun Stampede anime on Netflix right now. Those characters are 3D models rendered in a 2D style. (The occasional jankiness in their movements is what reminds me of their 3D origins.)

The pectorals are more of an issue for Genesis 9 females. IMHO the breasts look off.

Depends on the pictures one plans to do. For me it isn't worth it.
