The colors, pose, and set are lovely. Her face gets a little lost though. I'm not sure if it's just the camera angle but it's hard to see where her face is at. I can't tell where her eyes are. Again it might be just the camera angle above the feathers that obscures her face.

Yeah, I had noticed that after rendering. It's not my favorite pose/angle. I was going for her studying and falling asleep, but it got lost in translation. After 12 hours of rendering, though, I decided to let it go and move on.  :D

12 HOURS!? What render engine are you using? Since you're going for NPR it shouldn't take very long to render in Iray, since you're going to run it through filters anyway.

If you're rendering in Iray try turning on the Post Denoiser and set Progressive Rendering >> Rendering Converged Ratio to like 25% (or even less). This should render it MUCH faster.

I'll have to try those settings. I thought it was just the feathers and fur making the renders take longer. I use a laptop that probably needs updating. I usually just set the render to run at night so it doesn't hold me up. It would be nice to go faster...

@juvesatriani Those are very nice! When you get the Action updated, could you post the link to it? I'd love to try it out!

@csaa Looks good! I like that overhead shot - it makes the panel more dynamic and really increases the visual appeal. This is such a great example of how simply changing the camera angle and rendering the panels from different angles and heights - and not just staying at chest level, like we tend to get in the habit of - can really add so much more visual interest to each panel! Also, I'd like to mention that I enjoy the way you used the light spot to really help Cleo stand out against the dark background. You're showing how important it is to keep our characters' silhouettes clear and clean. The only issue I see is the typo (I'm assuming) of "to be" doubled. This panel is great! Nicely done! If Cleo's emotional response to this news that she needs to stay behind is important then you could add an inlay panel of her face showing her disappointment (or whatever emotion she might be feeling). Or even just show her face in the next panel.

Thank you so much! I'm looking forward to trying these out!

I really should package up my PS actions and share them as well. Yours are probably way better than mine, but maybe someone will find them useful. lol :)

  • I used my actions, some parts of @juvesatriani 's actions, and Topaz Studio. I might be getting close to something of a 'style'.

That's lovely! The background is a bit dark and the character gets a little "lost" in the background/environment. Because she's such a visually "busy" character, you'll probably want a bit more contrast between her and the background. You might try adding a slight emissive to the background/environment elements to lighten them up a little and help the "readability" - so that the character and background aren't so blended together.

Other than that I'm really liking the direction you're going here! Very cool!

You guys are being very generous with sharing your Photoshop Actions so I thought I'd finally get off my duff and package up some of mine to share as well. I don't know if anyone will find them helpful, but I thought I'd share them just in case. They're a bit "strong" but can be toned down by lowering their opacity over the original render.

Attached is the ZIP with the actions.

Here's an example of the styles of looks that the actions can give.

I think my personal favorites are 1, 9, and 10.

If anyone has trouble installing them or figuring out how to load or use actions in Photoshop let me know and I'll see if I can walk you through it. :) You can also Google "How to load Photoshop Actions" if you've never done it before. Let me know if you have any trouble though and I'll see if I can help. :)

@juvesatriani Your Photoshop Actions are FANTASTIC! The "02 SMOOTH FX" is my favorite part. It takes quite a while to complete on my older computer but the result is really nice!

Here I did a mix of your PS Actions with mine. I really like how it came out!

Thank you so much for the really cool actions!

Thanks for taking time to try my action @3diva @tugpsx and @LoreMistressIzaria . let me know if there is trouble or need improvements .

As I mentioned in readme file , those action designed to work as sequence . From no 1 up to 6/7 .Also  sometimes you need to to manually painting with black (in MASKING Channel) if you think some filter feel too strong or distorted some important parts like eyes - finger or textures

So Should  I  make one continous /combining action version or do you think better to  split them like that ? My main reason to split those action into smaller ones because sometimes I need to repeat some actions .

I`m also like your action @3diva , it feel more comic style than mine

I like that you split them up - as you said sometimes it's fun to run one of the sequences twice before moving on to the others. For instance, I really like stopping at the "05 Fake Outline" stage and sometimes double that up to get a more comic style. Your actions are really fun and a big help! Thank you for taking the time to package them, adding the prompt instructions, and providing a guide for them. That's really nice of you to put in all that work and share these with us!

I`ve forgot to mention , if you feel slow when doing my second action *02 SMOOTH FX# . You need to setup the GPU option

You can find in FILTER>NOISE>GreyCstoration > Tick GPU . You just need to setup once . Now you should find those action work faster than before

I did a mix of your action "Cartoonize 2", @juvesatriani 's actions, and one of my actions. This is the result. It definitely came out "painterly" and might be a bit strong mixing all three, but I'm definitely going to experiment more with mixing your actions, mine, and juvesatriani's at different strengths.

Thank you both for taking the time to share your actions! I'm having a lot of fun with them!

You're welcome! I hope you find them helpful, or at least have a little fun testing them out. Keep in mind that the "Image Prep" presets are only really for if you want a painted look.  Otherwise I usually skip them unless I'm aiming for something more abstract or painted looking.
