I'm struggling with the 32- and 64-bit thing. I have an older Mac, 2009, running Snow Leopard (10.6). While Snow Leopard is 64-bit capable, I don't believe I ever enabled it. For example, my system report says:
64-bit Kernel and Extensions: No
However, I know it's 64-bit capable, I installed the 64-bit DAZ Studio and it launched.
So my question is, should I uninstall and re-install using the 32-bit installer.
Thanks.
User Accounts
If I intend to use DAZ Studio 4 within 2 different (Mac) user accounts, do I need to do anything different when I install. Does it matter which account installs (or installs first)?
Just so you know, I tried this and I found the [user name]/Documents/DAZ 3D/Studio/My Library to be different for the 2 different accounts.
Thanks.
If you're using it with 2 different user accounts, it would be better to install the content to Shared.
If you're using it with 2 different user accounts, it would be better to install the content to Shared.
Thanks, but I realize my question wasn't clear enough, and that I actually have 2/3 questions.
1. If using DAZ Studio 4 with 2 user accounts, do I need to do anything (besides the defaults) when I install the program (DAZ Studio 4)?
1B. Does it matter whether I use the standalone installers or the Installer Manager?
2. I haven't gotten content installed yet, but my second question is, Can you be more specific about "install content to shared?" Yes, I see that a folder was created in Users/Shared. But is there anything more significant than pointing to that during content install?
Thanks so much for your reply.

1. I don't know if Mac defaults to applications being available to all users -- if it does, then there's nothing else you need to do when installing.
1B. Should be the same whether you use standalone or Install Manager.
2. No, all that you need to do is use the location in Shared for content -- if it's a fresh install of DS (that is, you haven't had DS installed on this computer before), then it will by default map two locations: one in the particular user's documents, and one in Shared. If everything is going to be shared, I would remove the non-shared one. The default for DIM (DAZ3D Install Manager) is to install content to Shared.

Aside from what Mike has said:
(1a) Applications in /Applications are accessible by all users.
(1b) No, but when using standalone installers, think twice what default path they want to install to, you will most likely change that.
(2) If you plan to have "a lot of content", I would recommend installing all content to a separate disc, but other that that, as long as you have diskspace, just create a "My Librray' folder in Shared and install to that (but you can use whatever name you like.
And for your 64/32 bit question, 64 bit is the way to go. SL (10.6) has full support for user space applications running 64 bit.
32-bit is like installing an old VW beetle engine in your ford explorer ;-)
I've tried everything and I can't get the Content Panel to even show when Daz opens. This is what I get when Daz opens any suggestions? should i just erase all the daz info on my computer and re install? I didn't have this problem prior to installing Daz 4.6 pro. My system is Mac 10.6.8. Thanks!
First, do you mean Smart Content or Content Library, and when you say show, do you mean be visible or show any content?
Anyone tried DAZ 4.6 (and Carrara 8.5) on OSX 10.9 Mavericks?
DS 4.6 runs fine on Mavericks. There are no problems at all.
I've run both DAZ Studio 4.6 and Carrara 8.5 on it. Carrara seems to benefit a lot from the updated ATI Video drivers that come with 10.9.
Seen one "interface glitch" that I'm trying to reproduce so I can bugreport it in Carrara, a screen refresh after a open dialog that fails, but might not be related to 10.9 at all.
Thank you for the answers. I´m on OSX 10.9 Mavericks now and two renders I did before and after upgrade show a speed-up about 10% :-)
Yes, sounds reasonable. Specially if you are on a low memory machine, then memory compression really helps.
I've been struggling most the afternoon trying to get things to work right. I have the Genesis folders created (and showing up in Poser), but when I try to use Victoria 5, 6 or any of the Genesis figures it gives me the following error (see attached)
Now I've installed DSON in the poser directory where it said to but I'm not having any luck. Help? Someone?
If you're using P9/PP2012, do you have SR3.1 installed?

Just updated last week so yes, I think it's at SR3.1.

Updated from the update page at Smith-Micro, or updated to P9/PP2012?

Updated from the update page at Smith-Micro. Everything is a fresh, new install (with updates all over the place). Running Maverick (which I love). edit- just double checked (both on page an the product) it's SR3.1
exactly -where- am I suppoed to have DSON installed? The documentation was hazy. I have it installed in my P9 directory where all the poser installs are residing. But the error I'm getting is pointing at the starter essential folder they had me put in Documents.
Hi everyone,
Is there a complete list anywhere of where Daz Studio 4.6 installs files? Or is there an installer that removes everything from a machine?
I have an installation which consistently crashes when opening a dialog in one user account but which works perfectly in another account.
I've been deleting or renaming documents and folder in the corrupt user account. I think I've found all the ones associated with Studio, but it keeps crashing.
So far I've removed or renamed:
~/Documents/Daz 3D/...
~/Library/Application Support/Daz 3D/...
~/Library/Preferences/com.daz.Studio4 ... .plist (several files)
I've also tried installing a new copy of DS over the top in the hope it would overwrite the corrupt file but the crash remains.
Like I said, the installation works in another account, so it seems localised to the one user account.
Any advice appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike.
First off, can you provide me with the crash log as it might have crucial i of about where it crashes.
Second, I don't have a list but one thing that will be a problem is if things are installed into User Accounts, specially the content manager system, and not into /Users/shared.
So, is the idea tat the different users should have different content or should they share content? In the latter case I recommend installing into /Users/Shared (where data common between users is supposed to be located. Allthough there are some things still in ~/Library/Application Support/DAZ 3D that will clash in a multiple user environment.
Thanks for getting back so quickly.
This machine normally only has the one user so I went with the standard installation options and didn't change anything. I only created the second user account when I wanted to see if the problem persisted between accounts. So the original crashing predates a second user account.
I suppose 'crash' is the wrong word - the program gadgets and menus becomes unresponsive after I try to open or save a document. When the dialog appears, it immediately disappears. All of the top menu options are greyed out and none of the Daz Studio buttons or other widgets work any longer. According to the Mac, Daz Studio is still running and no crash has been detected - the application is using 0% of CPU time.
Since the menus are greyed out, the only way to get out of the application is to use Force Quit, I've attached the log file to the end of this message (no .txt attachments on Daz forums)
If you have ideas on how to fix it, I'm more than willing to try them out.
Thanks again,
Mike.

0x7fff8f181000 -
First, that crash seems to be when you quit DAZ Studio, am I correct? It looks like something related to OpenGL/Videocard memory cleanup.
Second, can you please try to describe step by step what you do when it becomes unresponsive, or correct me if I'm wrong in this description.
You start DAZ Studio, then you want to open a saved file, but when then open file dialog appears DAZ Studio gets laggy and the open file dialog never really shows. Am I right?
Do you have any of these installed?
- Default Folder X
- Akvis Enhancer
Both fiddle with the open/save dialogs and might, In don't say the will, cause problems.
Hi,
Thanks for the blindingly fast reply (makes me slightly guilty to be slobbing out on a Friday evening).
Daz Studio opens as normal and doesn't show any errors. t can work inside the application as normal; I can browse my libraries, add objects, render things out and so on. The program works completely normally until I need to use a dialog. I've been able to get it to lock up when trying to open an existing file or save a project, as well as trying to load an image when editing a texture. It does seem to be something to do with the standard Mac file dialogs that's at the root of the problem. The dialog appears as normal, I can see files and folders inside the dialog window, but it then closes on its own and all the onscreen widgets stop working.
After it becomes unresponsive there's nothing I can do in the program apart from force it to quit through the Apple menu -> Force Quit dialog. If I left it alone, Daz Studio would just sit there quite happily. I've not been able to get Daz Studio to crash even after all the widgets become unresponsive. When I use Force Quit, Mac OS produces a standard report containing all of the information I just posted.
I've not got either Default Folder X or Akvis Enhancer installed. The machine that's causing the problem is a 2011 i7 iMac with 8GB RAM running Mac OS 10.9. AFAIK it is completely up-to-date.
I have a second Mac here (2012 MBP also running 10.9) if you'd like me to install Daz on another machine.
Mike.
Can you please "lock it up once more", then in Activity Monitor select DAZ Studio (which probably says "not responding" and do Sample. (I can't screen shot how as I'm running OS X in Swedish.
I think the button says Sample application or something similar. Save the sample as textile and if it is not to long, post here, otherwise PM me and I'll give you an email to send jt to. The sample will most likely tell me where it gets stuck.
OK, thanks for the sample. It shows what I suspected, the code gets an unhanded exception and dies deep inside the file filter callbacks.
Now a couple of related questions, sorry but thats the best way of solving things unless you can access the machine directly.
What kind of disk are you using and do you have some kind of "disk performance enhancing" software installed? Is it the local disk or a remore NAS, a removable disk like a USB disk? Have you waited a few minutes to see if it fixes itself, can be a very poor disk performance.
Basically why I ask is that the way it works (I don't know the exact code of DS but have been programming the Mac since the dark ages and before that) is that for every file that is in the directory you opens from, the file filter will only enable files that the calling software (in this case DAZ Studio) has said are OK files. Somewhere deep inside this mechanism fails for some reason, could be numerous things, but most likely there is some kind of other software doing it's own filtering and they mismatch and clash and cause this system exception.
It can be that the finder database had been severely corrupted. Disk Repair (show errors) in Disk Utilities might answer that, and a Repair could fix that, so please try that, and try your other Mac and see it it works there. Also, there is an update to DS (that I know haven't fiddled with this part of the system but it might help to install that.
And last, do you have any external plugins installed for DAZ Studio (DS), like Reality or something else?
Hi,
Good news, I've got it working again.
As you suggested I did a reboot into the Disk Utility and then a full disk permissions repair which took forever and didn't report any issues, but Daz is up and working again.
Thanks so much for all your suggestions, I really appreciate the huge amount of time you spent trying to fix it.
Mike.
Great to hear it was fixed!
Have fun with DS, welcome to the world of 3D!
Hi, just wanted to share a quick tip to make installing DAZ content a lot easier. If you ever have something that is zipped up in a folder hierarchy like: (DAZ Studio stuff)
My Library ▸ data ▸ etc
Or: (Poser stuff)
Runtime ▸ libraries ▸ etc
Instead of drilling down through each subfolder and manually copy/pasting files, or launching a Windows VM to take advantage of its native Merge command, you can do the same thing on a Mac!
WARNING: Does require you to use Terminal.app but it's super easy
Assuming your content is arranged so that it's all contained in one Content or My Library folder, with Runtime inside of it, all you need to do is use the ditto command:
1. Type ditto with a blank space directly after it
2. From Finder, drag the source folder you want to merge (Runtime, My Library, etc) onto the Terminal window. You will see a green plus icon. You should see it automatically fill in the file path for you. It will also automatically type in a blank space so do not add another manually.
3. From Finder, drag the destination folder you want to merge WITH (your content Runtime, My Library, etc folder). It's very important these are named the SAME! It is not case sensitive however so don't worry about that. You will see it automatically fill in the destination path for you.
4. Press Enter/Return. You will see a little filled in square while it is copying the files over. You will know it's done once it moves down a line.
That's it!
I created RendoInstall, you can find it here: http://4eyes.code66.se/?page_id=7463 which does that but with a GUI. I also have some other tools for Mac users there as well.
And in 10.8 (might even be 10.7) or later you can option drag a folder to a folder and you will get a dialog asking merge or replace.
Hi everyone,
First off, I have only just come back to Daz again after being away for close to a year. Before I had a PC, but I have upgraded to a iMac now. There is a problem that I hope you can help with.
Due to upgrading my extra hard drive, I had to uninstall Daz3d and reinstall again. When I did, I could not find any smart content! Everything is installed ok, but I use the smart content a lot. So can someone please tell me how to get this back again?I have reimported the meta data again, but nothing.
Thanks for your help. :)
