I can copy files from one to the other I found
but only if they are in documents
is there some sneaky way to get it to see all my computer from the other one?

So, I defer to someone who thinks they can until you get desperate. Will it work when we get it set up the way it's supposed to work? Probably. 
First off, the basic questions.
OS versions of the two computers?
Are you using "Home Groups"? If so, on both computers?
Are you comfortable changing network parameters?
Are you using the Microsoft firewall or your anti-virus's firewall, and/or the router's firewall?
Are you comfortable logging into your router's configuration page?
Do you have the same login name and password on both computers?
Are you going through any other network devices like hubs or routers between the two computers.
Enquiring minds like to know.

Argh..., duplicate entry. I hate this forum technology.
I did go into homegroups and tried the password for Windows 7 I had on my Windows 10 machine.
got error, tried the public private sharing thing too, managed to somehow break Chrome in the process
how I don't know but when I tried Googling more about sharing it wouldn't open and Windows gave some error.
I never remember the errors as they use terms that go over my little head.
fixed Chrome in the end by uninstalling it and redownloading
half my problem is I am still figuring out how to navigate Win10 and its so damed laggy
and DIM is taking eternity to install my 700GB of zips to my new library there.
