    Hey, Fishtales -

    I tried adding the 3DL sky into the Iray Environment Map.  The results appear washed out and have much less detail than the 3DL render of the same sky.  Are there other settings you know of to make this look better?

    3DL Render of Skies of Reality, Sunny 2:

    Iray Render - same map loaded in Environment Map = 1.00, Environment Intensity = 1.00:

    Try dropping the Map Intensity to 0.5.

    Also make sure it is the HDRI you are using and not the .jpg. I don't have that set but looking in the store there are HDRI and .exr images which should work.

    Ok well I used the skydome from the Distopia City, have not set the lamp lights as of yet figured will do it next render.

    Also have not put a light in the walk way yet either will also be done next render.

    Did you try turning the map and lighting intensity down in the dome settings? I usually begin with both at 0.1 and gradually increase one or both for a night scene and juggle that with the Tone Mapping until I get the ambient light I want. Then I add any lights and set the lumen to match the Tone Mapping settings so that they are adding light to the scene but not overpowering the ambient light. It feels like a juggler with four items to juggle all at the same time :)

    Fishtales - That's probably what's happening - I used the jpg not the exr file.

    Saphirewild - The water looks SO much better!

    We're getting better!

    Time for a wild experiment:  Do a render with the Ambient light turned OFF.  Don't worry if it's too dark.  I really want to get into the night scene, so I'm thinking of working backwards from too dark to get to that sweet spot.

    Hmmmm I am really liking the way your thinking Draorn and I am going to do that as I think that would be really wild, but i am going to have to do it tomorrow as I am so dead beat right now.

    Been up since 6:00am so think I am going to turn in a bit early tonight and get a better start with that render tomorrow.

    There still seems to be a lot of bright light coming from somewhere on the Dolphins. For night time without using a map in the Environment dome I usually set the Environment to Midnight on the darkest day here, 21st December, Mid-Winter, and set the sky colour to SS Night Colour 0.0090:0.00:0.043 which is a deep blue. For a moon I use a Distant Light at 4500 temperature and start at 0.1 Lumen and work up slowly until I get the Moonlight that seems right. I also set the Tone Mapping for a night scene that I would use on my camera. Shutter Speed 1/30 or 1/60: F/stop 4, 5, 6 or there about: Film ISO 400 or even 600 if I think it helps. You have to watch how you combine these as some settings that are too high can make the image look 'muddy' or washed out. If that happens change that setting back and use another one to achieve what you want.

    There are no quick fixes I'm afraid :)

    EDIT: While it is free, the utility in the video has been modified and doesn't quite work the same.  Now I'm searching for ways to turn my own photos into panoramas and then 360 degree photos.  I'll get back to you on this.

    Well I won't clutter topic too much, just wanted to say am following along too.  3DL seems hard compared to Iray-- esp. glass.  At the risk of sounding selfish, those are quite a few good tips about night environments & followed "dracorn's" tut to getting boots on V4, etc.  Just hide the feet!  Duh!  Much easier than geometry tool and submenus.  As said, can learn a lot here.

    Here's hoping pesky real life gets out of the way.  ;-)

    Well here is yet another dive into lighting the darkness!!!

    Hey - now that's some pretty good-looking darkness.  It's got depth and is believable now.  Let's pump it up a little more.

    Increase the brightness of the two lamp linear pointlights a little bit.  To add more depth to the inside of the hall, make that light slightly more orange.

    Now to the dolphins.  Fortunately, I have the same dolphin. 

    I played around with the surfaces and brought the brightness of the dolphin down.  Here are the values:
    Diffuse Color: 205 205 205, Glossiness: 60%, Specular Color 160 160 160, Ambient Strength 50%, Reflection Strength 25%.

    Try that and see how it looks.

    So I did what you said @dracorn and turned up the lights as far as they would go and made the tunnel light more orange, also put in all the settings for the dolphins here is the results.

    That's looking pretty good.  The dolphins now look like they belong in the render.  I'm curious as to what the story is - what are they waiting for?  Is someone going to feed them?

    Now all that's left is to add some splashes/ripples along the waterline.  Time for some free Photoshop brushes - take a look to see if you can find anything that may work.  

  • They are calling out to their human friends to come and spend time with them as they are very lonely for human companinionship.

    I have GIMP so not sure as to what brushes I have to use for splashes and wave, but will look this evening when the kids go to bed.

  • I have no brushes in GIMP that I could use for waves or ripples.

    Just Google "free Photoshop brushes" and you will find several sites with hundreds of brushes. Then you will find yourself in a downloading frenzy, he he. Try searching for splashes, water, ripples. You'll probably need to download a few sets to get what you want. Once you have some brushes, send me links to them so I can download and play with them, and then I will be able to describe how to use them. Once you get the hang of brushes, they are really fun to use.
