I have a MBP M1 and it is picky as all get out when I use DIM and D|S. I can experience crashes 6 out of 10 uses, with the external hard drives disappearing. I have become quite good at Disk Utility now. But I have to back-up the content, which can take up to 15 hours onto other external hard drives to avoid having to redownload my content. I have to download on DIM one item at a time, and install one time at a time. And I can't do both functions at the same time. Nor get too many qued up to do. I hold my breath when I have a large Mb file to download. Yesterday I was in the middle of a download when DIM kicked my external off the grid. It took me about an hour to get it back and continue downloading.

UltraScenery XT cannot be installed on it at all, as we found out when it came out.

I can only type one word in any search window, it does not allow for a space between words.

I keep hoping Filament will be available, I like it on my Win 10 computers.

Can we get an update please Daz?

This sounds very unusual, I don't think I've heard of anyone else having this much trouble. I've been using an m1 iMac for a year now with no issues at all, and download dozens of items at a time without a problem using DIM. I also do regular back-ups or transfers of large libraries without a blip, and have had zero issues with file names. I'm still using Big Sur.

I'm running with 16 GB RAM and 2 TB of built-in drive space, and have two or three externals (2 x 4 TB and 1 x 5 TB); is it possible you're having some issues with lower specs? Even then, this still doesn't sound right. Hopefully a Mac System guy will chime in and help you out, as I don't think a simple DAZ Studio will solve any of this. You should post this in the Mac FAQ forum.

    Hi,

how is your external drive connected? USB-2/3 or USB-C?

I've experienced horrible slowdowns with slow USB drives that are not thunderbolt 3/4 compatible using USB- C USB 3.2 standards.

I'm off in the wild right now so I cannot check stuff but will be back in civilization on Monday-ish

Just on now, we had thunderstorms in our area yesterday.

The 8Tb hard drive is a direct USB - C to USB-C connection to the MBP, and the 4Tb (DIM backup) and 5Tb (My DAZ 3D Library backup) hard drives are USB-micro B to USB A, into a USB-A hub to a single USB-C connection into the MBP and I made sure that all externals are connected with Apple connectors, as someone posted there was an issue with other brands. That was after a 5Tb WD drive was fatally killed beyond redemption.

When I bought the MBP M1 in January, it was installed with macOS Monterey 12.3, then shortly after that, it was updated to 12.4. Earlier this week, 12.5 was released.

When I started with Daz, I was on my late 2012 iMac with an Nvidia 660, but by 2017 it wasn't doing too well, and the computer crashed totally and had to be taken to an Apple store to be recovered. At that time, I paid to have a Win10 desktop built for me just for Daz Studio. So I am struggling a bit to figure out where some files are stored on the Mac file system again. Like log files and such.

Thanks ahead for any help you can give me.

    Mary

    Log etc are store in ~/Application Support/DAZ 3D/Studio 4
    ~ = "Your home directory"

And how much RAM do you have? Iray rendering is fairly RAM demanding. Allthough macOS 12 is very good at handling low memory conditions (I've had DS use 105GB on my 32GB macStudio when rendering using Iray Server on BoostForDAZ, without crashing, but it was a little sluggish I have to admit.

    It came with just 16GB.

Edit to add: The few times I have tried to render I have no issues, other than it not being fast.

@memcneil70 Been trying to figure out your original issue with a dissappering drive. Do you have any system logs (found through /Applications/Utilities/Console.app) when this happens?

This sounds like either drivesaturation issue (how much diskspace on the internal drive do you have left?), or a bad drive issue, or something with authentications. Have you allowed the DIM Helper in system setup (Security -> Integrity -> Full Disk Access)?

    Hi Totte,

I went to that file area and it was blank. I am attaching some screen shots of DIM and D|S access in my Privacy settings, the Apple System Log that appears when I click on the Apple in the upper left corner of the screen, saved as a text file in Word, and if I am able to, two crash reports on the same day. I hope this helps you to help me.

I had to compress the Apple System Log.

    Thank you very much,

    Mary

Edit: I also have learned to NOT have any other apps open at the same time as I am using DIM or D|S actively, such as my security software, Word, browsers...

OK, you do have a Kernel Panic in the IODriver, that is very bad, most probably a bad external drive or something in the system.
Not related to DIM or DS, but probablty related to the drive(s) used by DIM/DS (where content is stored).
    Which drive is that?

And, are you using the Microsoft OneDrive extentsion? It's known to cause Kernel Panics on macOS 12.4+

I don't think I have Microsoft One Drive? I have Office 365 loaded, but only use Word and Excel out of all of that. I am not a fan of cloud based things and try to shut them down when I can. Is there something I can check to turn it off?

Also, before the 8Tb external hard drive, I had the WD 5Tb hard drive that got fried within a week or so of use with a crash.

I found it, opened File Manager and there it sat, empty and have no idea how it got there. Now how do I get rid of it?

    I feel like an idiot.

Funny thing is, it is on my iMac and I have never had an issue with it. Also never used it.

Edit: Ignore this, I just realized this is iCloud Drive! Totally trying to do too many things at once. And need new glasses.

Yes, that's iCloud, a different thing.
I don't think your issues are related to DAZ Studio. You should download https://apps.apple.com/app/blackmagic-disk-speed-test/id425264550?mt=12

and run it on your 8TB drive, not really to test it, but to force heavy load on it, and see if your system dies from it.

I want everything to look better with spectral rendering instead of some things messing up

    Spectral Rendering: Acescg

    No spectral rendering:

While the reddish purple brown looks good the pink below it is the color from the icon. Sometimes with spectral rendering emissives don't go through glass even tho I know they can:

    Spectral Rendering: Acescg

But with Honey Bolt I used the same glass shaders except uncolored and it still blocked her eye emissives so I had to make the glass over her eyes emissives losing the detail from behind the glass

    Spectral Rendering: Acescg

    No spectral rendering:

Then on some textures acescg just makes them completely black when they should be red or another color

So I think that should be thought of for the next version since everything usually looks better with spectral rendering until a texture doesn't work with it

@Totte, My back was turned and I just found a notice that the 8Tb external hard drive was not ejected properly.

Also, I can't type in the forums with spaces now. I had to enter this from my iMac.

Sounds like the drive is "bad" or maybe just the cable so when it vibates from heavy access it glitches

Well the MBP is on a movable table, the 8Tb is on a computer desk, and the cable is long and just hangs down, so I can swivel the table out of my walk path when not in use.

Did you run the Speed Test when the drive was "unmounted"?
Try again, if this happens again, the issue is with the drive, the long cable, or connectors, as if the drive goes awol during operations, DS and DIM (and any other app) will be most annoyed.

  • memcneil70memcneil70 Posts: 4,112

When Speed Test started, the drive was mounted. It had been running for at least 30+ or - minutes before I saw the message saying the drive had been unmounted. And I had been watching it periodically during that time. I am running Disk Utility, trying to get it back now.

  • memcneil70memcneil70 Posts: 4,112

Cloud fare ate my last post. But I was able to get the drive mounted and start the speed test around 10:40am today, and it is still running now at 11:21am MST. The connecting cord is wrapped up and clipped so it doesn't dangle.

How long should the speed test run if everything is okay?

You can stop, now try DIM.

  • memcneil70memcneil70 Posts: 4,112

Well, I had it running from about 10:40 am to 12:30pm MST when I turned towards the MBP and saw that the 8TB had disappeared again.

Ok then you have a drive issue

  • memcneil70memcneil70 Posts: 4,112

So that is two drives that were bad, in a row?

Would be great to hear an official update on the status of this project. Think it's safe to say the announcement from last year was premature so it would be professional to dissolve some of the mystery surrounding the situation.

That's what gets to me; the lack of communication concerning what or when to expect something. I understand the M1 Mac is/was a new thing at the time but this process has taken so long that even the M1 Mac is now outdated! I've finally given up on the wait and uninstalled the Daz content on my M1 Macbook Air. I have the 256GB version and can't afford to just let gigs of Daz content continue to waste space on my drive for another 2+ years.

But Daz was able to get 4.x.x.x working on M1 machines, which is why they are not pushing for an early release on DS5 as they were - Install manager seems to eb better than Daz Central on the M1 systems, but once you have that and the current Daz Studio you should be able to work.

Yes DIM works much better than Daz Central on my M1 - I have little to no issues installing content and running Daz; it's just the overall lack of performance from Daz not being optimized to run on the M1. When I first purchased the M1 (which I admittedly jumped the gun on) I was kinda expecting iray/filament to work 'out of the box' and just expected better overall. For the extent of the wait for Daz 5 my solution was to export my Daz scenes to Blender - seeing as it is better optimized for rendering on M1 than Daz. But even that has it's own hiccups and issues in which I'm not as proficient in the Blender program, so I slowly lost interest.

You may want to adjust your expectations a bit more as although Iray will utilize CPUs, it's designed and optimzed to use Cuda specifically (only Nvidia GPU). DS5 won't change this fact.

Probably not, but at least it will be native ARM code and not translated x86-64 code.  :-)
