Ok, here's my entry (with the completely unanticipated name "fire and ice"...) There's more I'd like to do with it, but with finals and visiting family for Christmas I think I'll have to call it done at this point. Perhaps I will make more modifications after the contest is over.
I saw a lot of great renders, some also very original. My renderwill definitely not win the price of 'most original idea'. I started out wanting to make a vulcano that spits out ice in a surrounding of fire. But it has become a very crazy vulcano, spitting out fire and ice at the same time (with some rocks and smoke, of course). I started out with a vulcano (which became 5, I think) and an ocean floor and then a number of rocks (generally doubled as well).
So here is my first and probably only entry.
@mermaid010 : thanks for your comment
@ horo : Opposites : the reflection on the ice is great
@ Sean Riesch: nice image @hansmar : I like the idea, nice one !
@horo... Fiery Ice Hall is very cool... love the lens effect. Opposites.. Great looking fire @Jamahoney... Thanks for the comment... That's funny... @Bullit... Thanks @Sean Riesch... I really like the framing of the image produced by the stalagmites... and love the steam @Hansmar... That is a crazy vulcano...
...Lots and lots of great images..
keep them coming

Hello I am new to this forum and I hope I'm doing everything right here.
If not, please just delete.
I apologize very much in advance for my bad english * g *
My first attempt to fire and ice
adcb's enties are most interesting and somehow serene, and I love Horo's firy Ice Hall. Mntmen's back ally view is wonderfully executed, and Drakenlord's is getting right to the point in a most promising way!
Ive had a week+ of fighting tooth and nail with Bryce 7.1 Pro (which usually behaves pretty well and gives me what i want). With a pretty simple scene It kept crashing, battling to move from materials lab back to the scene layout, and despite me trying a dozen lighting setups and many material tweeks n tests, refusing produce anything but awful. I thought some kind of strange corruption must have assailed my Bryce install. It may be something to do with my graphics card driver updating itself, or else a Windows update .... who knows. I re-ran the Large Address Aware just in case it was that, and slightly better performance allowed me to get out this Draft Iceland horse scene. I've still to get better Ice, snow and deal with the poor mane and fetlock hair (flames) but its getting close to what I had in mind.
I know Bryce doesn't use the GPUs for rendering, so can anyone tell me why my Bryce goes through a process of saying "OpenGL Conversion....." with a few seconds of doing the first render once I've opened Bryce? Seems strange.
Hope I can keep Bryce stable enough to work on finishing this scene to a nicer level.

.
Neat idea with the fiery horses!
I assume OpenGL is used to display the preview (before rendering) that you see in your viewport. You will see that conversion happen when you change from the rendered view to something like texture shaded.
@drachenlords: Welcome to the forum, and your English is just fine. That is an extremely nice image you're created.
@keryna: Neat idea of the fire horses. Since they're made of fire, their look will be distorted because of the heat. Nice work. Also, as to crashing, if you think Open GL might be the cause, you may be able to go into your video card control panel and disable Open GL. I know of one other program which doesn't play well with Open GL.
That's a nicely rendered idea, Drachenlords...fits the theme to-a-tee. I'm wondering if the melted ice (as watered volume) will exceed the spoon's volume and thus quench the candle flame.
Keryna...ooooh, that looks nice...almost abstract - cant wait for the final render.

Your problem is caused by the display mode you have set.
You can alter it by clicking on the little box (Highlighted with a red circle in the right hand picture below)
All the options below the line (Highlighted with a red square in the left hand picture below) use OpenGL to preview your work in the GUI.
The three options above the line dont and will allow you to set up and edit your scene much easier and quicker without the lag of OpenGL.
@jamahoney : nice lighting, nice ring. @drackenlords : that image is a very good idea ! @keryna : thanks for your comment and I really like the fiery horses.
I also have that problem of Bryce crashing, especially when the scene is getting near the 20 MB or even less if I use the "send to Bryce"
from Daz Studio, also gigantic terrains do that but not open GL in my case. @mermaid010 : A mixture of fire and ice : great !
Here is my second entry: The Guardian..............Final... really cool image mermaid...some really wonderful renders everyone!!! I guess I am in the dragon mode lately......
Comments
@adbc - a hot cool one.
My second entry.

Just thought I'd poke my nose in.
Some really nice renders, and no doubt some more to come.
If anyone needs a bit of inspiration have a peek at this.
