    That looks great Night-Forager!

Still doing some testing on the Stateroom before I even prep it for the masses, but work is continuing on other sets. Revisited my Throwback Corridor pieces and built up a full blown corridor set for it.

And then I thought, why not set up the corridor for the Discovery aesthetic.

I'm also re-visiting my Bridge of the Week or the Guest Bridge idea starting with a TOS version. Basically it's the Enterprise C bridge bones and I build the consoles and everything into it.

Hope to use that someday :D

Working on it. :)  I have like 3 sets that are just about complete and need some tweaking as I borrowed some stuff for them before I thought about releasing them (and I'm definitely not going to clump it with someone else's work). So I have a few things to rebuild.

    Ptrope said:

Who is considering using this with the bridge or other sets? ;) - I don't know if it's as large as Desilu Stage 9, but it would be a good start.

I might have to make all the wooden framing behind my sets ...

It looks like the exploded version would let you build that bigger if you needed to.

All I want for Christmas is a good crew quarters set (unless it shows up sooner, like for my birthday) laugh

Hello again, all! I really had to hunt to find the thread this time; looks like I'm not the only one who has 'been on vacation.'

Well, I'm thinking about jumping back into digi-Trek - no set plans right now (as in 'plans that are set,' because I do actually have plans FOR sets ... ), but I'm looking at my options. Mostly it's taken me awhile to decide I can use Studio; though I'm still dead-set on using Poser for space scenes, I'm pretty much resigned that if I want believable figures, I'm kind of stuck with Studio now, because I've gotten reasonably comfortable with Genesis 3 and can't use it easily in Poser. So I need advice: what are the best TOStumes for G3M & G3F? Most accurate, or at least more-than-passable, and for which there are good textures? I'm thinking about working with dForce to avoid some of the built-in shaping that looks odd, such as the typical huge trapezius muscles on the male figures. And, please, by the Great Bird, is there actually a good velvet texture for Iray? I had a great one in Poser, but nothing I've found so far actually looks right to me.

    TIA!

  • "And, please, by the Great Bird, is there actually a good velvet texture for Iray?"

Gets a sudden image of the Enterprise done entirely in velvet,

  • Hey all, I am transfering all the links over but it is going to take a bit of time since I was not the admin of the last page and the hyperlinks don't transfer over via copy and paste. I should have it all transfered by the end of the week.

Welcome back! Yes, they didn't transfer over in a working package from the prior forum either, all were broken, lot of work to get them looking all neat and tidy and working. At a quick glance you seem to have gotten what could be put back together, so.

Next question: I don't see anything I recognize in the list at the front of the thread, but does anyone know where there is a model available of the original Matt Jefferies shuttle design? Preferably a freebie, of course ;) This was done by Vance Bergstrom - I like the proportions, not as wide as some other interpretations.

Oh, now that's very nice — I'd love to have that sitting in my content folder. There's a few similar ones in various formats at Foundation3D and TrekMeshes, but I can't say I've seen anything with precisely those lines, especially the tapered aft end and the inverted-gullwing nacelle supports.

You can try asking over here - https://www.trekbbs.com

From browsing their forums just now there seems to be some very reliable folks who know how to find stuff out.  I have personally never seen that design before.

While you are there, check out what this guy has done in Sketchup - https://www.trekbbs.com/threads/refit-1701-a-3d-model-full-interior.276201/

MattyManx?  You'll get a chuckle from this.  Ptrope used to be the moderator for the fan art sub-forum at the TrekBBS.

And Mattymanx, I'm very disappointed you don't have my Crossbow-class starship in your list from Foundation3D cheeky - actually, you were one of the first people I thought of when looking for the Jefferies shuttle, hoping that maybe you had converted one of Dave Metlesits's models.

Don't know of this will help but amyaimei has some good Kelvin timeline freebie TOS Era uniforms for G8 M & F over at Deviant Art.  Also has some really good TNG uniforms for G8 M & F there too.  Looks like she is working on a good TOS Era G8F uniform.  I saw a test render that looks prety good.  You can probably fit them to G3 with one of Sickleyields G8 to G3 clone sets.

Have you tried any of JGreenlee's shaders?  He has a bunch that may work for velvet including some actual velvet shaders.

And again, all I want for Christmas is a good Iray DS crew quaters set.  I don't care what era, jujst need the set.wink

Sorry, the list is just the ones I converted.

Dave would have been a good choice or even Trekmeshes but activity at both has been rather quiet this year.

Officially, no males were ever depicted until the Scott Bakula series "Enterprise", season 4 (which I have yet to see).  But from what I've read, they were depicted as slave marketeers for the females.  But in turn, they supposedly had pheromomes that allowed them hold sawt over the males.  So, who was really the slave and who was the true master?

I bet Mylochka would know.  Orions and Andorians are her main interest regarding Trek.

Funnt enough, the planned animated series "Lower Decks" will feature an Orion female as the co-lead of the show, serving aboard a StarFleet vessel.  They'll probably take the opportunity to finally expand upon the premise.  While formatted as a comedy, it's not supposed to bwe a "parody".  What's presented in that upcoming show will, in theory, be considered as "official" as any of the live action "dramatic" productions.

But as it will likely be part of a "pay" streaming service, I guess I'll miss it as I'm not paying for more services.  Shoot, I haven't even seen any of "Discovery" beyond the first half of the pilot story which ran on "regular" CBS.

    Sincerely,

    Bill

FWIW, one of the early Pocket Books novels had an Orion as one of the major secondary characters. Can't remember more than a few details, but she was intelligent, a bit bookish, and wore glasses. She just had these occasional... moods.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the animated series portray males in the episode, "The Pirates of Orion"?

Wsterdan, you are, indeed, correct!  How I forgot them I can't say.  Guess I'd better turn in my fan club membership card.wink  And that reminder in turn reminds me that "Journey to Babel" dealt with "Orion pirates" as well.  The Andorian delegate's aide, the one who stabbed Kirk, was supposedly one of those pirates wearing a disguise, his fake antennae housing a transceiver.

Anyway, I now feel like a right and utter git.

    Bill

    Hey, Bill!

    laugh

I don't think your membership card is any danger.

Their appearance in TAS has them looking more like henchman in an episode of Scooby Doo than aliens in an episode of Star Trek, and if I remember correctly TAS was more-or-less dropped from canon about 10 or 15 years after it ended (though references to a few episodes appeared in later live action shows). That said, I think you've solved a mystery for me: I could never figure out why they coloured the males blue when the females were green, I suspect now that they looked at the only other appearance of a male Orion ("Journey to Babel") and coloured them blue, not thinking that the only reason they're blue in "Babel" was because they were disguised as an Andorian.

I, or one, will sleep a little more restfully tonight, thanks! wink

  • Didn't they have trouble with "The Orion Syndicate" in soem DS9 stories? Not, I think, that any representatives appeared.

That whole business about whether or not the animated series being "official" material was purely for legal reasons during the late 80s and early 90s when the ownership of Filamtion was in flux.

You see, Filmation closed shop by the latter 80s and it was purchased by the French division of L'Oreal, yes, the hair care and makeup company!  Sounds like crazy talk, I admit, but when I questioned the validity of this claim at the TrekBBS, another member supplied a link to a news article.  Seems the company wanted to diversify into other radically different avenues, like animation.  Because the animated Trek series was produced by Filmation, there was question as to who truly owned its content.  Pre-existing material, like Kirk, Spock, the other crew, the Enterprise and so on, there was no question, Paramount owned those.  But stuff that only appeared in that cartoon, like Arex, M'Ress, the tribble predator "glommer", the alien pod ship from "Beyond the Furthest Star", those elements were in question.

So, to avoid any possibility of "losing" all that while the lawyers debated, it was decided not to make mention of that material until the case was settled.  Yes, there are the tales about Roddenberry wanting to disavow the cartoon, but those claims came through his "assistant" Richard Arnold.  He openly disdained the Filmation cartoon and basically claimed, "Oh, well Gene said this..."  Besides, by that point Roddenberry's health, both physical and mental was on the decline and he was kept on the newly created "Next generation" as little more than a figurehead.  He had no real power as to what could or could not be presented.

Later, an agreement was settled and it was decided material exclusive to the cartoon could be used in future productions, assuming someone prompted to include them.  That's why this new comedy animated series will feature a Caitian medical chief, because CBS owns that concept and others from the Filmation series.  That why we saw the city of Shi'Karr (spelling?) Spock's childhood home, in a digital matte painting added to "Amok Time" for the "rematered" series present a few years ago.

Sorry, if I got a bit "passionate", but I want to dispell the "myth" about "disavowing" the 1973 Saturday morning series.  It's exclusion was purely for legal reasons so as to lose it entirely, and only for a short time.

    Sincerely,

    Bill

Thanks for the info, Bill, always appreciated! So many years (decades?) have gone by it's great to have someone who can enlighten much of what was going on behind the scenes way back when.
