Given that Studio 5 might be a thing, wouldn't it make sense for DAZ to eventually provide a first alpha with filament so that folks could test it out.
Having nothing in terms of an at least rough roadmap is what sucks most.
CHATGPT told me it is programmed by humans using real data, so it thinks Richard is misinformed
Just for fun I asked ChatGPT how you connect to the ChatGPT API, and it failed, so Skynet wont be self aware yet...
That's kind of like saying that AI's are more like us than we ever imagined they would be. How many Homo sapiens could tell you how they connect up to the universe? How many would always give you an accurate answer?
Our universe doesn't have its API documented on Github.
Ok.. black friday-cyber monday time.. so I'm at the decision point.
I'm thinking the Mac Mini Pro base with the 24 gig memory will be the choice.... I'm debating heavily on the processor upgrade or the ram upgrade... but I'm leaning (trying to convince myself) that the base will be more than I need and the extra money is better used elsewhere.
(this is also versus the
I think it's the right balance between power, capability, and price that should give me a lot of years of use (and if i start making more money off stuff that i NEED more..ram for example...I can look into the potentional 3rd party ram upgrades that are being worked on, or buy back/buy new plans)
(I'm upgrading from a 2012 imac and a 6 or more yo windows pc with a 1070ti, so it's more future years I'm looking at rather than imrpovement over current as that's a given).
ALL INSIGHTS and OPINONS are helpful.
I say 32GB RAM, at least. I have issues rendering on my 32GB machine with Iray as it chews up all RAM and then it gets really slow (much worse when using consolidated RAM/VRAM. I have no problem rendering a scene on my 64GB MacPro 2013 when Studio uses 100+ GB RAM, but when Studio hits 26 GB RAM on the 32GB RAM macStudio shit hits the fan.
so you think the 32 gb ram with less of all cores ( don't know if there's a difference between m4 and m4 pro as opposed to the quantity of the cores vs the quality).
The m4 pro has 24 or 48 gb ram... 48 is $400 more...that's a big investment.
(meant to include the picture with the previous post)
Personally, from a Windows viewpoint, the more RAM the better. It's an overkill for people who just browse, watch some YouTube videos and use Instagram. When it comes to creativity, more.
@Scavenger: where are you going to buy this from? Amazon? Apple.com? Best Buy?
Apple.com is likely where I'm going to. I have the Apple card, I get 3% back, so that's good.
Something I learned when I bought a Mac Mini and Studio Display last week was that former U.S. military/first responders/medical can get a 10% discount if they have 'ID.me' and order online with the Apple Store. Of course the Denver, CO 8.86% sales tax ate most of that up. I have no idea if ID.me is available for service members for other military services.
I don't get the Mac Mini until Dec 12. The display I was able to take home almost immediately, with help of others who could lift it. With packaging, it weighed more than I could lift.
So how well does the Mac mini run the studio display? Does the Mac mini have enough RAM and power to run DAZ Studio satisfactorily? I've never thought of buying one because I didn't think it had enough power.
Mini by itself isn't really what limits, it's as I've said before, RAM, even the first M1 based Mini has a CPU that is powerful enough, but witrh 8GB unified RAM yiu can start studio, load a few assets then you ran out of RAM.
The Mac Mini M4 I ordered includes:
Apple M4 Pro chip with 14‑core CPU, 20‑core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine
64GB unified memory
4TB SSD storage
10 Gigabit Ethernet
Three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI port, two USB‑C ports, headphone jack
Accessory Kit
I was just billed for it by Apple this morning, so I hope it came in earlier than expected. But until I receive it I won't know. But I went over my order at the Apple store in person (where I clarified the ID.me stuff) and he did not indicate there was any issue.
Mary
As a side note, yesterday the 4Tb WD drive I use as the iMac Backup died. I hope the 4Tb external drive my iMac files are on hangs on since I have used it since 2017 when the iMac's OS crashed and had to have the Apple OS reinsalled by the Apple Genesis bar. I think the Monday tech sales can't soon enough.
Well, when you do get it up and running, please let us know how well it runs DAZ Studio.
LOL, I actually wasn't planning to install D|S, but I have caught myself thinking about it the past few days. I keep doing that to myself. A few Core characters, lights, environments, props, ... and next thing I know, I have 3/4ths of my library loaded because I love this, that, and can't do without ...!
I have come to the conclusion that Daz is addictive and even though I am no great shakes at art, I do love to work with it. Even when I just plan to test a character, I find I spend hours setting up the render.
So I will do so, and will work on the test render for everyone.
I'm at the stage deciding between the 14/20 Processor or the 12/16 one.. and 512 vs 1tb storage. I've got a 2tb NVME 10GPBS for main storage, but debating if I want the extra on the package itself.
I had to go with my experience over the past years with software evolution, that investing in what I could now might keep my system relevant for a longer period of time.
After my iMac's back-up drive died a few days ago, it brought home just how fragile my current business system is. Thankfully Cyber Monday arrived, yet I didn't see many deals, but on Micro Center's regular newsletter they did have some good sales. I was able to pick-up a pair of 24Tb external hard drives to store and backup my data. Overkill, yes, but I have the space to store what I need.
So the plan is, overkill all the way. I have been saving like a crazy person for this for the past few years.
The Mac Mini M4 Pro arrived at lunch today. I have been setting it up and getting things ready to go. I thought I had DIM and D|S downloaded okay but the iCloud kidnapped files that are normally hidden. And then my paths in DIM were wiped out and the weird default one was put back in and installed the first items into the base applications. I had to uninstall and after fixing the paths, reinstall. But after finally opening D|S Beta and dealing with two crashes out of the gate, I managed to get the paths loaded there also. And then I found the thumbnails for the items withing the products are missing, the main thumbnails were there. I will uninstall again and reinstall in the morning. I am glad I have kept the .zip files this time. All I can add, it moves real fast, it was easier to set-up than the MacBook Pro M1 which fought me every way it could. And I will need more USB-A to C converters. No issues with DIM's access to files. Apple seems to have become a bit more polite with DAZ software.
Mary
When you get it all working, please let Us know how it runs. What do you need the USB Converters for?
Do you have to re-download all of your products from the DAZ Site?
The three ports are USB C. Most of the things I have to plug in are USB A. Regarding downloading my products, I tried transferring from a Win 10 to a Win 11 last year (?) and I have been finding the occasional corrupted/broken file. With a large hard drive I have the room to store the DAZ zip files. Right now I am moving the files from my old external to the new hard drive which I was worried would die before I could get this here.
Unfortunately, uninstalling and reinstalling the files I had already downloaded did not fix the missing product's item's thumbnails. Gagh, I know it has happened to others, so I will have to google it and track down the fix.
Thumbnail directory is set in DIM (if that is different it ont showup I think)
also, sometimes just reimport metadata for the smart content does the job
Hi Totte,
I first checked my file's structure and did fix a naming issue. Uninstalled, reinstalled, no joy.
Then I opened up my MacBook Pro, and its version of D|S Beta and verified my permissions in 'files and folders'. (Even though I have the same version of Sequoia 15.1.1, they are laid out differently for the laptop and desktop versions. Not fun to match up.)
I have repeatedly tried touse Content Database Maintenance to re-import Metadata, but the tip files still show with that exclamation point image and say "Could not open file: File does not exist." Yet on the Content Library tab, everything is fine, tip files show up, product is able to be loaded into the screen, materials applied...

File does not exist.
But the files are there in Content Library and in my file structure as loaded by DIM. I have loaded all the mandatory files DIM comes up with initially, and I did a number last night of other 'essentials' and LAMH and many with 'Ultra' in the name, Measure Metrics, some of my plug-ins, and some other things I find useful to start with. Then I stopped when I found the issue with the tip files in Smart Content. But after each attempt to fix, I have uninstalled, reinstalled the files, making sure the PostreSQL CMS for Mac gets in there first.
Is there any other package that must be ran for Smart Content and I have missed it?
Appreciate any help,
Mary
Do you have the thumbnail path setup?
Yes, I have left the default ones there.
Do you see any thumbnails there?
Yes, but they are the primary cover thumbnails, not the tip files for the individual items within the file. Yet in Runtime, the textures tips do show up correctly, duf files for characters and any tip files for them also are there. When I look at a product via Content Library, everything appears normal, it is only on the Smart Content tab where the tip files do not appear, and when I try to click the ! icon it says the file is not there.
I even tried rebooting my computer after my previous checks and still it is weird.
