    Ha, now I'm smiling. If she was only shaking a ruler at us. smiley Dress is quite an improvement too.​ Oh, maybe that 'famous' one hand to one's glasses to lower them just below the eyes like they already are and give a stern look directly at her eyes to her students.

    OK, so I quit the last image I was trying to make for the portrait contest and instead created a portrait of a carnival barker so I could use the expression I dialed into the Genesis 3 model the other day.

    1. It is using an HDRI for light and it's a nightime picture (or rather looks like about 30 minutes after dusk) but the HRDI was made in a field that is apparently outside a stadium with massive floodlights. So as I'm going for nightime carnival lighting I need to somehow reduce the amount of light from the HDRI and then add lights that are reminescient of your typical nightime carnival scene.

    2. I'll have to drop & re-add the goldfish bowl & goldfish and leave the textures & shading alone except for applying iRay Uebershader. I messed up trying to convert elements of that product to fancier iRay shaders and they don't work at that distance, in that light, for that product.

    3. Since my goal in DAZ is to learn to create toon style caricatures of real people in a 3DU, Girl 7, and Guy 7 sort of style I may try to dial in more of a toon look while still trying to keep the caricature as recognizably that model. I guess it's a matter of try and see.  May not finish that in time to enter as an entry into the July contest though.

    Suggestions welcome.

    No, it's the free HRDI of Preller Drive at night by Greg Zaal. It must be outside a rugby or soccer stadium during a game judging by the brightness of the lights but it's too bright for a typical carnival at night.

    How can I turn down the brightness of the HRDI light? Then I want to add an assortment of different colored lights for the neon lights of a carnival. Sort of a disco effect but weaker.

    And this may be beyond what me computer or DAZ Studio can reasonably do by the end of the contest entry but I want to add the PC Ferris Wheel and maybe a couple of other rides in the background and edit them to have simulated 'glowing neon lights' - do I do that just by picking a bright neon color for areas where lightbulbs are and set the iRay to 'Scatter & Transmit'? Will that be enough t similate a bright signage style neon light?

    Are you quite SURE you don't have the headlamp on? It is on by default unless you turn it off.

    You can lower the intensity of the environment lighting on the Environment Tab of the Render Settings Pane, the easiest way is with the Intensity slider.

    You would need to set surfaces to be Emitters (casting light) to get a neon effect.  Its not about scattering, its about emission. I am not sure if those objects have surfaces suitable for setting up as emitters but they might.

    I'm sure the Headlamp is turned off. I do that for all the scenes so I can learn how the light setups really look.

    Maybe Greg internally edited the HRDI to make the light more intense as to look at a rendering of the floodlights they certainly don't look that intense although that partly depends on where they are aimed.

    I am going to decrease the light intensive & rotate the HRDI dome so the floodlamps aren't headon. Then I'll see how many carnival embellishments I can add before it brings my computer crawling to slow.

    Updated lighting and added Specular Eyelight that was recommended here. Also modified his expression so it wasn't so exaggerated.

    Let me know if you think I should increase the lighting more. Thanks!

    Looks like Elvis. I would make the scene darker but not too dark and bring his magic hand to a position such that it casts a noticable glow and shadows around it and on Elvis. Unfortunately I'm not sure how to do that but I want a similar neon glow for the scene I'm working on and for it, evilded77 said to use Emission & Bloom. Actuall will.timmins said to use Bloom in another thread.

    If you have some sort of nighttime HRDI or scenery in dark green (but a sublte dark green but a bright overpowering green) woods I think the contrast would be good with the red and black elements of the picture.

    However, it looks good now. I am just being a busy body suggesting tweaks like I'm tweaking my own entry.

    I think it looks good. You've come a long way with this one. Look back where you started and see how you've progressed! That's the point of these contests. Well done.

    OK, this render is just an adjustment to the iRay Render intensity from 1.0 to 0.1. It looks like nightime now but I will need to see how much light the simulated neon lights will give off and add also 3 - 6 week spotlights of different colors to try & get the effect I'm after. Load up the Ferris wheel or another ride, maybe both although only a glimpse of a part of them in the background will be visible. And maybe add in some other carnival things inside the kiosk the carnival barker is tending to.

    Sounds like you are planning a grand composition here. Just my 2 cents: Don't overload with neon lights and background elements; try to keep the focus directed on the character. If some neon lights from the game behind him cast some nice colors on the character, fo gor it, but as for a Ferris wheel far in the distance, maybe hold off (weigh the work involved with how much it really adds to the portrait).

    Otherwise, I'm really liking the carnie atmosphere! Good character and great expression.

    Oh, now, that's nice!  :)  I like it and it really seems to fit.  I love her expression.  She actually reminds me of a teacher I had once.  One question, are her sleeves split and suppose to do that or is there some poke through?  I'm not familiar with the dress so I wasn't sure, but the left arm seems to have a slightly wider split than the right and part of that seems to be poke through. Otherwise, I looks great!

    Sorry, I've kind of not kept up with the thread.  Life kind of got busy.  That and I'm just scattered all over the place with things I want to do, both inside DS and out.

    Okay, so for those of you who know me best, I might surprise you with my second wip for the contest.  I've stepped over into 3Delight territory as scary as that is.  :)  3Delight is NOT my favorite render engine, but I think I might be starting to get the hang of it.  Anyway, hit me with suggestions or any problems you see with it.  If you start talking too techie about 3Delight stuff, I warn you I may not know what you are talking about.  I can barely move around in there.  And, lighting works so much more differently than Iray!

    I'm still working on my first wip with my kids and should have another version of that up by Sunday.

    I like her looks. It would be interesting to see her holding a candle in one of those old fashioned candle holders (and I'm sort of enamoured of adding small emissive lights since I started my carnival barker entry so feel free to ignore).

    Hee, I am super nervous. I've never participated in one of these before. Figured I could use the motivation, as I am pretty weak on both expression and lighting.

    About the 6th attempt at rendering, as I try to teach myself about skin shaders and lighting. Iray is a wonderful yet baffling thing. o.O the boob light was unexpected and makes me giggle like a 12 year-old. I have fiddled with this image so much that I am losing perspective on it, and wouldn't mind some pointers on changes required.

    You made a nice start and I think you made a interesting choice in using a light coming from the back as the main light. I would probably adjust the angle of that so it actually doesn't light up the boob like that wink Other than that the lights are looking fine, there is still enough light to give her features accent. For the expression and posing try to thing of her as a Person with a story to tell. Every good photographer tries to tell the story of the person, and so should you. Which connection  would she have whith the photographer to make such a face? Probably she is not happy that her photo is taken? she doubts the skills? Just think of that and experiement with her body lanuage, which is more than just the face.

    I tend to agree with Linwelly.  I love those happy accidents we get sometimes with lighting when it does something we didn't expect or anticipate but in this case the light on the boob is distracting from her face.

    You have a great start here.  I love the raised eyebrow.  Some very subtle adjustments to the posing of her eyes and mouth could really add to this image.  Go into the pose settings for the head and play with the individual settings for the eyes and mouth.  Stand in front of a mirror and duplicate this expression.  What do your eye's do?  Does your mouth change at all?  Do you want to put your hand on your hip?  If may look odd to other people ( if any happen to be around when you are doing this ) but it is a great way to get natural looking poses and expressions.  Another alternative is to Google images of people with the look you are trying to achieve.

    Great start.

    I love the moodiness you have achieved in this image.  I cannot tell you how many times I have tried to achieve this type of look and failed miserably.

    The only detraction for me is the same thing Barbult already mentioned.  Whatever that thing is beside her nose is a distraction and not in a good way.

    Makeup and the glittery clothing with the hair blowing all work together really well.

    Maybe a rim light to help her stand out from the background. Especially focused on the left of the image (her right/back). You can play with the color of the light too which would keep it from casting a stark white edge that might not match the atmosphere you are going for.

    HA!  Thanks, KM.  I went back and looked closer at the sleeves, and you're right!  They weren't supposed to be split.  It was some poke through on both sides.  It's just the MFD for V4 with a freebie texture.

    I really like your 3Delight render.  It's dark and moody, and kinda gritty.  I like the imperfections in the skin. The lighting can be very...stark in 3Delight.  Things that are harder to get in Iray.  I like it the way it is, but if you want to experiment some, try a lighter background to separate her a bit.

    Thanks, everyone!  I'm glad she's going over so well considering I don't do so well in 3Delight.  Real quick note as I'm heading out the door. 

    @Barbult  That thing on the side of her face is part of the scarring on that is around her eyes.  I may have to rotate her a little to show that off a little more and make it more recognizable as a scar. And, I was going for dark and mysterious, so that's good!  :)

    Here's the promo shot from TRICK: LucreZia by Syyd I'm going for a kind of different look, but you can see what the full scarring looks like here.  The picture is full size so I have it going to the store page if clicked on, hopefully!  I never quite get those links right.

    @ewcarman  I have a light behind her, but I can't seem to get it to show up like I want.  It's either too much or not quite enough.  I can't seem to get it at just that right balance.  I'll upload the other version so you can see what I mean when I get home and maybe someone can give me better advice as to how to fix that.  In Iray, I can do rim lights all day.  In 3Delight, I can't get the lights to do what I want!

I have fiddled with this image so much that I am losing perspective on it, and wouldn't mind some pointers on changes required.


    Quite lovely. The boob and shoulder light isn't obscene or anything but creates a good lighting contrast to highlight the gentleness of her face. I don't know that I'd change a thing with that portrait except to render it at a larger size.

    I've been gone all day and it looks like everyone else was out enjoying their Saturday, too.  Here is my wip with the light I was talking about that I thought was too much, but I can't seem to get exactly what I was wanting.  I think first version (LucreZia16) is just a little too bright for the moodiness that I was shooting for and there is too much of the blue light on her shoulder.  The second one (LucreZia17) is closer to what I was trying to achieve, but I think it might still be a little too bright. 

    Other than my 3 point light setup, I have a Point light with a fairly quick drop off rate.  The color is set to a light blue which I thought would work out great with the black hair and I do like the blue highlights the hair gets.  I tried a spotlight, but couldn't seem to get it to work quite like I expected for a kind of hair light.  It seems to go right through the girl and hits the floor.  I have no idea what I'm doing wrong.

    I'll take whatever advice I can get because I just don't understand how the lighting works very well in 3Delight.

    Not sure if this is the problem Knittingmommy but I have found I need the spotlight to be back quite a ways from the figure it is lighting for the light to actually hit the figure.  If too close it seems to go right past.

    I like the second one better KM.  Have you tried looking through the spotlight while positioning it?  Sometimes that really helps show where the light actually is and then you can move it closer or farther away while actually looking exactly at what its hitting.

    And good for you for going out of your comfort zone.  I know you really don't like 3Delight lol.

     

    Hee, I am super nervous. I've never participated in one of these before. Figured I could use the motivation, as I am pretty weak on both expression and lighting.

    About the 6th attempt at rendering, as I try to teach myself about skin shaders and lighting. Iray is a wonderful yet baffling thing. o.O the boob light was unexpected and makes me giggle like a 12 year-old.     Don't be nervous!  We all started out just like you and that's what these are for. You will learn a LOT of stuff by participating and everyone is always very helpful and kind.

    I do agree the light on her boob is a bit distracting but overall this looks good.  The only thing really bugging me is that the left (my left) is cropped in the photo a bit more than the right. Moving her over a smidge may even that out.
