As I've said in other threads, I don't really care about DRM, but I don't like Connect and don't really expect to ever use it unless they fix all of the problems that I have seen and posted about in other threads.

Would you please file a ticket or two with Daz about what you feel needs to be changed about connect and the encryption?  They dont read the forms that much and dont use it to track things.  If you file a ticket as a feature request it will be considered.  It will go far greater then a fourm post ever will.

    Thank you very much

Yes, but you cannot use Connect only items without Connect, which is the problem we all are concerned about here. If one chooses not to use Connect at all, any product that isn't downloadable as zip or via DIM are inaccessible and thus worthless to us.

As long as you have connected your DS49 online once, you never have to connect again.  After that you can download all connect  itmes as the offline packages with the authorization file.

I cannot use DAZ connect items in Carrara and on the converted clothes and hair the UV mapping messes up badly for Carrara, I have been using DRM content from Reallusion for years and with an export license it works perfectly well in Carrara.

So as far as I am concerned it is bad DRM.

It's probably worth filing something if you haven't in the past, but imo they based on personal experience is that are too comitted at this point to turn back.

Speaking of that, a couple more items that I'm not sure were mentioned or not (I skimmed the Zev0 discussion):

As for fears ... people fear DRM for a reason, and it isn't "the unknown." It's being screwed over multiple times by multiple companies. There are many examples of it making customers' life worse - the only real unknown is a case where it helped customers.

but a DRM encumbered product can never be as usable as a version not encumbered with DRM.

Define usable? How does that affect using content sold here the way it's encrypted? Userbility and customizability remains the same. Sure maybe you can't move it around like you want (actual files on disk), which most don't do anyways, but the product still functions 100% like it is intended to.

You can't use encrypted content if DAZ Studio suddenly decides your machine has changed configuration and your Internet access is off, like when the power goes out in the area that handles your access, Internet servers go down, I move and my Internet isn't set up yet, I'm behind a secure network where I work offline, etc. There are tons of situations where encrypted content cannot be used. For about a year now, I have a dialog popping up telling me that my configuration has changed and I need to log into Connect. I refuse to do so. I don't use Connect nor do I use encrypted content. That dialog is exactly what I fear. As long as that dialog keeps popping up, it's a clear indication of how things go wrong and how it's possible to be locked out of content I bought. I went through the whole DRM thing in the 80's. Never again. I understand DRM all too well. I know how it's implemented. I'm a programmer.

It's the same with the site. We have to re-log in sometimes even though some of us set it to stay logged in, yet nobody refuses to stay offline when that happens. They try again until they are logged in. It's all a mindset. Do I fear all my content I bought is gone, everytime I have to re-log into Daz's site? No. So I don't fear I am going to be locked out of my content using the DRM. Until that happens, and I log into connect and my content is unusable, then I will be worried. I hardly get that pop up anyways, it's only after I change something on my PC or Studio is pushed too hard while making content and it crashes. But to ignore logging into something ever again, well, this isn't the 80's. We constantly have to log into things for verifiation these days. It is a safety protocall. I would be more worried if I was never asked ever to verify who I was and just assume all is good. Hell, Gmail asks me the same thing, verify who you are, I'm not going to say no, and just stay offline. Again, just the way I look at things.

There's a valid point, though: Those who do not have DS installed, because they exclusively use Carrara, or Poser, can't download or install encrypted content, even less decrypt it. I see nowhere a solution to this, except for the users in question being forced to install DS4.9.

(Though... I somewhat wished that the Encrypted discussion gets moved into a separate thread from this thread. The main purpose of this thread is to gather the Encrypted content items. This function gets lost almost entirely in the ongoing discussion. Just my thoughts and opinions. Peace. heart

It is the only thread we can discuss it. And the link to encrypted content for those wishing to avoid or purchase is on page one.

Not quite the same thing -- I can understand having to log in to use an online service. But Daz3D is not an online service, it's a tool for producing art.

Anyway, for me the Connect side of things doesn't concern me too much, although it seems that Daz went overboard trying to make it easier for beginners or infrequent users at the expense of making life more difficult for power users (e.g. your own example of having to organize content in two places, one for your old stuff, one for the new). It's the ramifications of encryption that are the problem for me personally.

As mentioned upthread, thanks for dropping by to discuss this. Always good to hear from the PA side of things.

The idea was to split this thread, so one is for the encrypt discussion, and one is for the alerts. But again, that's just my thought.

There is very much a difference. Not being able to log in, is to protect our account, our identity; not being able to verify who we are is a means of protecting something we have paid for. It stops us using something for the benefit of someone else. Not being able to log into a website (as an example) doesn't risk us being locked out of our computer or some product on our computer - except it does with DRM content. DRM protects other people's products from use by the people who paid to use it: unless they can prove they are entitled to use it.

Of course Gmail wants to know who you are; you're connected to the internet. Products, I purchase, download and use are on my PC. A change to said PC will render DRMed (not encrypted) content unusable until I log into Connect. Presuming I will be able to. My connection is good; always on fibre broadband. But in the last month, it has failed twice; each time it was fixed within a few hours. Would I have had issues if I had DRM content: perhaps.

However (and this is the important part to me) I could not possible have had issues as I don't have any.

DRMed content takes away my ability to manage and mitigate risk. The risk is always present. That is unacceptable to me. Others will walk quietly into the night (to quote a certain film).cheeky

    ---

I keep emphasising DRM over encryption as the two are different. Aspects of Daz products are already encrypted, but they are not DRMed. I can't access those encrpted parts, and there is no risk of my being prevented from using the products as they are not DRMed.

Can we please differentiate the two systems.

Simple difference, if something happens to my login at the DAZ3d site, I can still use my downloaded unencrypted content. The system cannot take that from me no matter what happens to my account. Any encrypted content could easily wind up lost forever if my account cannot somehow be recovered. Accounts get hacked all the time and they are not always returned to the rightful account holders at the end of it. Why should I face lockout from content I've purchased and stored locally (as DAZ does not guarantee that it will always be available to download. They've been good about it so far, but there's nothing saying they couldn't take that option away tomorrow if bandwidth suddenly got prohibitively expensive.) if my account has to be shut down or wiped due to being hacked?

Another concern is the authentication servers. What happens if Studio 6.x uses a different authentication system and perhaps my hardware limits me to 4.9? Companies shut down old authentication servers all the time.  DAZ was forced by customer outcry to say that they'll remove the DRM from products after a year, but they have yet to reach the point where we'll know if they'll do so.

These may be remote possibilities, but they're risks that only affect the DRM encrypted content. At no point do customers receive any kind of benefit to offset the risk they take, encumbered products aren't in any way superior to the ones available without the DRM.

And, such content is a guaranteed lost or delayed sale, whereas the reason for the encrypted/DRM encumbered content is the potentially lost sales from illegal downloads

You are confusing Daz Studio with Microsoft Windows 7 through 10

My computer that runs Daz Studio is currently offline and I can load and use my Connect items just fine.  Daz Studio does not watch your hardware configuration.  If you install a new version of DS49 then you may have to reconnect as I am not sure if the connect data would be replaced or not.  If you install DS on a new computer and wish to use it instead for all you content then you would have to connect that one or if you wipe you hdd and install a new OS.

Has it actually been confirmed exactly what the criteria are for it demanding a login due to configuration changes? I've seen it triggered on my system by driver updates and a memory upgrade.

It reminds me a little bit of New Coke, where customers did not accept the new formulation as readily as expected, causing the company to re-introduce the old recipe as 'Classic Coke' three months later.  My favorite moment in the whole mess was the Classic Coke press conference, where the rep was asked whether this had been the plan all along (to put two products on the shelves where there had been one): his remarkable reply was, "We're not that dumb; and we're not that smart."

Sometimes 'New' just won't click with consumers.

The early versions of 4.9 had some difficulties and were mildly unpredictable when figuring out if the machine was the same machine as it used to be. After 4.9.1's general release we believe all of those issues have been solved so you shouldn't have to login through Daz Connect again on the same machine, even when switching between 32 and 64-bit and when upgrading between versions of Daz Studio.

    Hi Matty,

I was just curious if there is anyway to tell how much money you or the PA's would had made with items Unencrypted, vs as it is being encrypted? or is there anyway to know if your sale would have been greater or less if a manual download would have been included with this product..   I was just wondering does Daz give you Pa's projected sales or something with encrypted products?  Or do you guys had away to tell your sales revenue vs loss's due to encryption vs unecryptioned or is it just a guess right now as you guys build stats?  I would think as a PA you would want to know your sales counters if Daz connect with encryption was benefiting your sales or not?   compared to sales loss to piracy or no sales because of how the product is delivered through DRM.

I have to be honest was looking at this model it really looks beautiful and almost bought it ,  but once i seen it was daz connect only when i was going through check out  it was a deal breaker. its to much to mess with with the way I use daz,

Its pretty fair to say I won't never use DAZ connect. Will this model be available for manual downloads after a year?   if will have a manual download after a year  I will consider buying it then.

As a PA can you or you Daz_Folks please try to sell me on the idea with a straight face on gains that would make me want to use Connect compared to what I do now with manual downloads? , Is there any benefit I could get from Daz connect. that I don't have now with a open manual content management ?  I'm just wondering how Daz and you PA's are going to convince me a Power users/ customer that daz connect benefits me and want to spend my money.  because I don;t see any reason myself  other than that would be the only way to buy your products in which case i guess my shopping daz would be done.

@Ivy, one real benefit that Daz Connect offers me is the ability to easily identify and install updates to products. That includes metadata updates, because I'm a big user of Smart Content. DIM can also identify and offer product updates. With manual installation, how do you know when a product has been updated? Do you run DIM to find out but install manually? Do you surf forum threads for postings of updates? I'm curious.

Everytime Daz Studio is started, it verifies the computer is authorised to use DRMed content; this may and does happen without the user's interaction; however, if there was a problem, the user would become aware of the problem. They would not be able to use DRMed content. To enable access, the user would be perform what would hopefully be a quick verification process. There is no guarantee that it would be quick, indeed, experience of computers assures me that sometimes, the process would be painfully slow.

I see no reason to pay a company cash for a product that adds risk to my use of the product, especially when there are many products elsewhere. DRM is a way of shifting risk; the company reduces its risk (they believe - the actuality varies) and the customer accepts some of that risk; the degree of risk varies, but there is always some. The potential never goes away.

@Ivy, yes, at least as far as general sales go; I do not know if the PAs get any specific breakdown based on type of download or not.

Oh boy I have a personal offer for 30% off Kenji 7 HD. ...shame it's locked in Connect, otherwise I would 100% have bought it today.

This is a pretty important milestone for Daz since it's the first "core" product that's been locked away behind the 4.9 Connect wall. Might have to give up on further rounding out my Genesis 3 collection.

I'm not sure if the HD morph for an anime character counts as "core". Now, if it were the HD morph of a realistic character...

Think of it this way.  If DAZ Studio did not monitor your computer's configuration, you could just send the downloaded and authorized connect content to another person and they could use it thereby defeating the copy protection.  The way it works is, if they attemp to load the encrypted content, because their computer's hardware/OS fingerprint does not match the hardware/OS fingerprint of the authorized user, DAZ throws up the error and requests reauthorization.  At that point the person's account would show they do not own the product and would not get authorized.  I'm surprised DAZ did not suficiently explain this to PAs.

I know why it's done; I understand them wanting to protect their products from theft.

DRM has a poor track record.

I'm more interested in protecting and maintaining my ability to access and use content I've paid for.
