Alternatives to Adobe Photoshop

I've owned a number of Photoshop versions since 1993(all purchased from Best Buy except the first that was bundled with a printer and scanner ).I've had little luck re-activating after a desktop crashand support there is not helpful towards any real resolve.Have any of you  been able to use Gimp or Painter or ACDC or any other apps successfully ?Open to any suggestions .Thanks for any responses.

I'm still using an old photoshop and also Blender  but Krita is pretty decent https://krita.org/features/highlights/

Krita and Gimp here...mostly Gimp (and have been for years).   If you haven't looked at Gimp in several years, it's worth another look...and the current dev branch/upcoming release will add a bunch of new features/support, rework some old ones and close the gap between it and Photoshop, even more.

I use paint.net, it is unbelievably versatile but wading through all of the available mods can be a real pain. But once you have it set up, it's great.

    And it's free.

I use Paint Shop ProX8. Not as expensive as Photoshop but does most of the same things. I find it so much easier to learn too.

I still use Paint Shop Pro 7 for one function; not bad for a program from 2000. Yeh it installs. Gimp some. Would like photoshop, but not paying for a subscription.

I agree with Petercat about paint.net (getpaint.net if you look for it). Awesome, easy to use program. I have Gimp and Photoshop too, but I usually wind up using Paint.net. It is for PC only though, (not sure if you're mac user or not, then I would say use Gimp.)

I go way back to Photoshop on floppies (ask your grandparents).  I've tried most of the others, but find them all lacking one way or another.  This is possibly just because PS has become second nature, in most cases I don't have to think about how to do something.  I'm using a fairly recent version of Photoshop CS, but I've got Photoshop Elements on my laptop.  Its pretty good, roughly equal to early versions of Photoshop, maybe before the CS switch.  I've seen it around $50 I recall, a good deal.  Sometimes bundled with Premiere Elements (which I do not use), at a good price.

I use paintshop 18. It uses photoshop brushes now and that was all I really felt like I missed out on with my old version.

How'd you get the brushes into Paintshop 18?  I just installed the 30 day trial, poked around and found the brushes that come with but no sign of my Photoshop brushes even though I pointed it at my Adobe brushes folder.

Also do not like the installer not giving me any choice of where to put the program, it ran automaticallyupon download and installed to my C drive. Which is totally NOT where I want anything other than Windows and a couple other programs that absolutely must be on C.

I moved mine to the e drive so I know it is doable. Of course I do not recall how I did that.. meh. The brushes need to be imported as custom brushes if I recall correctly. I think I watched a video or something on doing it so I could get all of ron's in to use.

Go to FILE - IMPORT - CUSTOM BRUSH

then you can browse for your ABR files (and other brush formats) and import them

FWIW, the Adobe Photoshop Elements & Premiere Elements 14 bundle is a "Deal Of The Day" currently at Amazon, $75 (half price), 13 hours to go.  Four stars out of 5 from 142 reviewers.  As I mentioned above, I like PS Elements on my laptop (I have CS on my animation machine),  but do not use Premiere Elements.
