Daz troublesome shadows on photo backdrop

While Daz Studio has been notorious for not providing "automatic" shadows on photo backdrops,it works around this problem by providing a complicated process of using a primitive panel combined or tweaked through shader mixer.

Most users don't complain too much because they prefer to add the shadows in Photoshop or other post-processing software. But in

most other design softwares shadows are basically a default feature. Animations are another headache to accomplish in Daz Studio. The results are usually unsatisfactory, and only those with more advance knowledge can make decent, not perfect, animations.

I think these are the two features that Daz and developers should improve on.

Which "most other design softwares" do you mean?

Reallusion's Iclone 5 and 6 for example,if you drop a background photo, shadows from any lights on the subject appear on the backdrop by default.

Shadow catcher shaders applied to planes have been around in the CG world a lot longer than iclone...and are pretty much 'standard practice'.   It's not Studio specific by any means.

That said, the way the backdrop is implemented in Studio, on the 3Delight side of things, is not easy to come up with a solution that doesn't involve adding geometry/shaders.   Iray, does implement a 'virtual' floor that includes shadow catching...and it isn't too difficult to get a 'wall' by using the canvass features.

But for the most part, the reason it ISN'T much of a problem...most Studio scenes include actual, physical prop/geometry backgrounds....modeled rooms, ground, etc.  So shadows will just work.
