Ddr5 5600 or ddr4 2666 MHz with i9-14900k for cpu rendering or RTX 3060 12gb for gpu rendering
Is ram speed really a big deal for rendering speed on cpu rendering? I currently have 2666mhz ddr4 and am wondering if it's worth upgrading my motherboard just to get 5600mhz ddr5 not to mention getting the 5600 MHz ram. My pascal titan xp and Maxwell m40 teslas will no longer be supported by iray in the very near future (I believe in the year or next few years I forgot which) and I think a RTX 3060 12gb is not enough vram for iray
so two part question:
i do a bunch of Ultrascenery2 scenes with vdb rain Hdris and props no animations and I do a lot of interior scenes with ghost lights props emissives and characters and volumetrics and a few exterior scenes with hdris and emissives and occasionally rain and vdbs as well as few characters most of which are low poly crowds using crowd generator cars and props I can't afford anything higher in vram/newer so I'm kinda stuck with cpu rendering until the higher VRAM RTX cards go down to what a titan xp cost now---provided they're even supported by iray rendering by then. I also do basic animations with fashion catwalks using single characters and a scene with emissives and Hdris but nothing special like vdbs or volumetrics. But those are rare. I'd like to grab a 12gb RTX and try to fit it on all that but I strongly doubt that is even remotely possible. Feel free to tell me I'm wrong and how I can get it all to fit on 12gb vram RTX. I'm open to suggestions
if not i have an i9 14900k non overclocked
should i use 3200 MHz ddr4 with it or should i buy a ddr5 motherboard and use 5600 MHz ram? If I can suffice with 3200mhz then thats a cheaper upgrade and less of a pain as I don't have to take apart my rig not to mention im on a extremely tight fixed budget of about $300-$350/month so I'm trying to stay within that budget.
let me know which I should do
if I can go the 3060 route I'd prefer that but if not....cpu rendering is what I'm looking at...which isn't....terrible?
Comments
I doubt that memory performance will make an enormous difference to CPU render times.
Is it possible to fit the type of scenes i mentioned on a 12gb 3060? If so how do suggest i do it?
Hi Millie, DDR4 3200 is roughly the same performance as DDR5 5600, so not worth the change of motherboard.
Get the 3060, at least it will keep going when your old GPU's stop working. You can still fallback to CPU rendering for the larger scenes.
if a 3060 isn't enough for large scenes then i should just use cpu rendering only and forget about a gpu for Daz because ALL my Daz exterior and landscape scenes are large hence why I got a 24gb Tesla. So how good is my i9 14900k for cpu rendering? I have it laying around on a motherboard with 64gb ddr4 but i never actually used it for anything yet other than testing it. Yes they work btw. I'm running a ryzen 5 4500g as my cpu right now so is it worth the hassle of swapping out the motherboard cpu and ram for the i9 setup I have?
