Rendering causes Windows to freeze up completely with a new HDD installed

I bought an HDD, the main drive in my PC is an SSD. For some reason plugging it in and trying to render a scene causes the entire computer to completely freeze up, when I remove it, I can render normally. There's nothing DAZ-related on the HDD, it shouldn't even be aware of it in any way, the partition letters aren't in the log at all. The step it breaks on is:

2024-12-10 15:54:43.644 Iray [INFO] - IRAY:RENDER ::   1.5   IRAY   rend info : Using Embree 3.13.4

I feel like I've seen it break on other stages, but that's the one I can replicate. In the progress window itself, the last thing that appears is "updating volumes". It always happens before any of the rendered image can appear on screen, on the checkerboard window stage. I've gone back and tried rendering scenes I've rendered, they break it too. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

  • That sounds as if the power supply is barely able to meet the demands of rendering - when the HD is attached the extra draw is enough to overwhelm the power.

    There's a 100-150 watt margin even when the GPU is firing on all cylinders. And wouldn't the PSU shut down if it got overwhelmed like that instead of freezing up.
  • In case someone experiencing the same problem finds this post, the issue was with Windows being set to handle memory paging automatically, so with the HDD plugged in the paging space was moved to it from my main drive every time and Daz was fatally struggling to move files in and out of there for some reason.

    If Daz Studio is using HDD paging for memory, you need more RAM in your computer.
