DAZ Crashing Upon Initialization

I am running the most current version of DS - 4.23.01 and something has gone wrong.

It has been working fine until just recntly. When it seems to have started was when clicked on the Updates tab I saw an update available for a DAZ product - Witchy Platform Boots for G8F as Irecall. I clicked it to do the update and nothing seemed to happen except a small window popped up. It was a window that appeared to be the readme for the product at the DAZ website.

Nothing else seemed tobe happening so I clicked the X onthelittle window and clised it.

Ever since then DS will not open. At first when I double clicked the DS icon it would start to open. I get the splash screen, then I would get the gray base screen that DS loads inot then everything would go white and then DS would close.

Not all I get is the  splash screen and DS crashes back to the desktop.

Anybody have any idea what might be going on here?

Did I break something by Xing out the readme window?

Any help is appreciated.

Have you tried to restart your computer?

And do you normally install using Connect?

Maybe try to post a screenshot of what you are seeing.

    Hi Felis.

    Yes.. I have restarted twice.

Last night I shut my laptop down completely and unplugged it. Still DS will not start.

I usually use DIM to install. But, those boots did not come up in the DIM as an upgrade and that's why I was trying to do it via the Connect method.

I can't see how a product update can crash Daz Studio. Although I am not sure there has been a product update - it is a transferred product.

If you can't start Daz Studio, I think I would try to reinstall it.

If I reinstall it, will I loose everything such as saved scenes and my DAZ library?

What if I uninstall the last DS update and reinstall that?

  • felisfelis Posts: 4,464

Your content is not part of Daz Studio.

I am in doubt if you need to set the content libraries pathes, but I would actually assume that wouldn't be affected of a reinstall. It is stored in another place.

Daz Studio doesn't get patches, installing the new version uninstals the old and tehn installs the new in its place.

No, uninstaling/reinstalling the aplication will not affect your content or plug-ins.

    Thanks Richard.

    Thanks Felis.

Can I simply reinstall DS over itself to fix any corrupted files?

Of so, where can I get the latest DS? I normally let the DIM handle these types of things.

Just open DIM. Find Daz Studio and right-click > re-install.

Felis, when I right click on it, re-install is not an option. It is there to be seen but I cannot choose it. Do I need to un-install and re-install instead?

Have you closed Daz Studio before trying.

I have never re-installed Daz Studio itself, but if re-install isn't an option, then I would go for un-install and re-install.

Yes. I closed DS. I find it odd that re-install could be an option but is grayed out.

Perhaps if I restart. Perhaps there is something in memory making the DIM think DS is open?

Did you delete the packages after installing? if so you won't be able to reinstall.

Hi Richard. No. I didn't delete anything but perhaps the DIM did after install?

It will if that option is checked at the bottom of the Ready to Install tab

Okay. I believe that is the issue.

So, iI need to un-install and re-install then?

  • I think so, yes - with content you could download the zip manually and drop it in the DIM Downloads folder, but the stand-alone isntallers are not the same as the DIM zips for plug-ins and applications.

Thanks again for your help Richard.

So I chose to uninstall DS and it went through all it's gyrations and then it opened a window in my browser @ DAZ that said the install was complete.

I though "INSTALL. I said to UNINSTALL" So I double clicked the DS icon on my desktop and it loaded fine and has worked for a few days.

Now, after purchasing new content from DAZ and installing it, DS is back to craching to the desktop when I try to open it again.

It gets to the gray work space and immeadiately closes.

    I don't get it.

  • Have you checked you don't have more than one Daz Studio installation, for a given bit architecture and release channel (e.g. 64 bit General Release)?

I DO have two icons on my deskyop. There has been for a couple years. It all started back when I was using a beta and full release version.

I could not figure out how to get rid of the duplicate and it never seemed to effect anything.

Do you think this is my problem now?

How can I get rid of the duplicate?

One DAZ icon is DAZ Studio 4.20.0.2 and the other is DAZ Studio 4.23

Richard, when I look in Windows Add/Remove programs the only DAZ Studio I see listed is DAZ Studio 4.10

  • Try removing that - things isnbtalled through DIM will not show in Add/Remove so that must have been a stand-alone installation.

Having two   shortcuts is not an issue if they are different bit architectures (32 bit and 64 bit) or release channels (General reelase and Public Build). However, having two different builds of the same channel might be an issue if, for example, the application settings for the newer cannot be properly parsed by the older.

Ok. I'll get back to you shortly.

Thanks Richard. I uninstalled the version shown in the Add/Remove programs and though I still have two DAZ Icons on my desktop, I am now able to get into DS.

Any thoughts on how to get rid of the other icon?

Now here is something interesting ... In the DIM under the Installed tab, I did a search for "DAZ Studio 4.2" and amongst the items that came up I saw a DAZ Studio 4.23 Beta. I should not have a Beta in there because I set the setting to only install the public release versions. I have forgotten where that setting is and I am currently uninstalling the Beta version. But, I did have that set before.
