Here's some shots of the project I'm currently wrapping up, a collection of hero space props and environments that utilize VDBs, 8k textures, 16k HDRIs, instance groups, and some other fun stuff for creating realistic space scenes. This will be the first installment of what I hope will be a growing collection.

Firstly, there are ten handpainted 8k planets. Each planet has multiple VDB atmosphere layers, a cloud layer, and a surface layer. You can customize everything from the density of the atmosphere layers, to the prominence of the surface features in the Surfaces tab:

ETA: It's available now, have fun and show me your renders! Space Bash! | Daz 3D

There is also a customizable and highly detailed set of rings that you can use to make any of the planets a ringed planet:

There are also a bunch of asteroids that have displacement maps loaded, so when you need them to be hero props, you can just increase the displacement subdivision, and you're good to go. I also include them pre instanced into a nice field to save you time and energy:

Looks really good! Believable space environments (with lighting) are hard to find. So can a user just load one of these environments and then add ships and render??

  • So far this looks amazing!

Yep, they're HDRI domes, so they contain their own lighting information. For instance, here's a quick render I did to demonstrate, with some ships flying around in one of the nebulas. There's no lighting source other than the environment here.

Of course, if your scene is in just black space with stars (Adaptive Starfield) you'll need to add a lighting source to your scene. Fortunately, space scenes are super easy to light. Just add a big sphere, move it far away from your scene, and light it up. Pretty much all lighting in space is from glowing spheres.

Also included with this set is a huge VDB sphere called "Space Haze Volume Sphere". You can load it into your scene to create a haze that gives depth to the emptiness of space, and helps to separate objects from the background visually. Here's a scene without the haze:

And here is the same scene with the haze:

It's fully customizable of course. You can make it more or less hazy, or change its color, all in your Surfaces tab.

In case anyone is interested, here are a few of the product shots for the environments. There are 11 total included in the set.

I also did this thing where I stacked different exposure levels of stars in a field, which allows the user to control the density of stars in a scene by adjusting the Environment Map slider:

By the way, these environments also make fabulous fantasy skies:

I've never done a space render, but I have tons of space props/ships. This will give me an excuse. I'm in.

Also, just for fun, the set includes a couple of very detailed...I don't know, mines? Probes? Reactor cores? I guess they're whatever you want them to be!

I'm too lazy to find a copy of the "Shut up and take my money!" GIF, but this is going to be a must-buy for me.
