I am wondering if there are any late-1970s or early-1980s cars (i.e. Chevrolet Chevette, Ford Escort, Toyota Tercel, etc.) I could purchase or get for free from any site?

Look for Hum3D
Freebie from DryJack: https://www.renderosity.com/freestuff/items/69312/fiat-126 It's for Poser, but converts well to iRay & DS.
Freebie from Lucien_Lilippe: https://www.renderosity.com/freestuff/items/82253/citroen-2cv6 Colours not entirely right & it's an OBJ file.
Paid:
2CV (this version was 1970's and '80's) https://www.daz3d.com/teuf-teuf Has an iRay addon.
Think that's it from me.

I have some suggestions but some are not just inexpensive family cars. They are ones that I remember from driving around the states during the 70s and 80s and would fill in a street scene if you need it. I left out fire engines.
https://www.daz3d.com/1971-am-muscle-car-2n1 - Any guy who had one, cherished it and kept it forever.
https://www.daz3d.com/casual-family-sedan - Not sure if this is more 90s or not. But it is bland enough to be background.
https://www.daz3d.com/metro-police-car - Anyone who ever got a speeding ticket knows this model of cop car. They have been around forever.
https://www.daz3d.com/metro-police-truck - And if you live in the 4-wheel country, this is the vehicle of choice for the cops. Again, very popular across the states.
https://www.daz3d.com/retro-small-car - The VW Bug my mom had one and I still see them on the road today.
https://www.daz3d.com/retro-pickup-truck - Old trucks never die. Especially ones without computer chips.
https://www.daz3d.com/retro-muscle-car - More muscle cars, again the guys won't give them up, unless to pass them on to their sons.

While DAZ has Jeeps they are from WWII but I couldn't find any newer ones. But if you have the DAZ+ WWII Jeeps, with paint shaders they could still be on the road. Jeeps never die also. And the 70s were only 25 years after the end of WWII.

There are a few 80's/90's cars here in various formats. You would have to convert to .OBJ and add some iray shaders to them, but they usually work great in DS after that
