How to set up for DIM 3rd party product installation

Hi there.  Content Wizard is giving me a lot of headaches lately, but I've been seeing a lot about installing 3rd party products through DIM.  What are the basics I would need to do in order to set up my pc for something like that?  I've seen something about creating a special folder, but I'm not sure how DIM would communicate with that.
