I would like a hair that can be placed like real hair. I mean the following points combined in one prop
- make the hair shorter and longer
- make seperat strains/parts shorter or longer
- pose the hair with gravety
- lay the hair flat on a surface (bed, pillow, couch)
- place long hair in front AND behind the shoulders

In DAZ Studio that is the sort of thing Look at My Hair and Garibaldi Express are for - though for use in Iray you would need to convert to OBJ.
you can do that with the tools Richard Mentioned, but it won't be easy I own both the tools referenced btw.
There isn't gravity persay, and they don't have dynamics so they don't collide with things(including the figure itself...). They aren't as easily controllable as mesh hair. However in reality they are still going to be your best bet to get all of what you asked for.
For the price of those tools (especially if you catch a sale) they may end up being worthwhile for you. Some people swear by them. I use mesh hair and make morphs to do the things you mentioned, but that is my preference.
Would you like your thread title to be Basic Hair Style?
Yeah, I was thinking, "What's a Basi Chairs Tyle?" :)
