Installing non-DAZ Store content?

Hi All,

OK, I do mostly shop for the DAZ store these days and do use the DIM for most stuff. Though I t's been a while, I have indeed installed and used content purchased from that other big content store while using DAZ Studio. Yesterday I purchased some new stuff and manually installed it. But, although I can see the folders and follow them to their end locations, the actual content in the last folder is not showing up in my content library. I can't access the content. I have use the "DB Maintenance" and re-imported the Metadata to make sure Studio sees it, but the content is still inaccessible. Thoughts??

FYI, I have content that states that it is for both Poser and DAZ, and content that is only listed as "Recommended Software - Poser". My memory is, that you can install Poser content into Studio, you just need to do it manually, correct? As long as it's in the proper Runtime folders, it should work correctly in DAZ Studio, right? I know I have renders that I included products purchased from Renderosity and used in DAZ Studio's earlier versions. Has anything changed with 4.8?

Appreciate any suggestions you can send my way. Thanks.

- Sol

Have you added the main folder of the new content in the content directory manager?

You need to add them in both, Poser and DAZ

Here's how to configure the paths for content in the Content Directory Manager.

On the PC, in DAZ Studio, go to EDIT –> Preferences –> Content Library –> Content Directory Manager.

On the Mac, Go to DAZStudio –> Preferences –> Content Library –> Content Directory Manager.

What is the folder structure in the zip? If there is a folder holding the Runtime and Data folders then you don't want that - the Runtime, Data and other folders at the same level in the zip should be merged with the existing Runtime, Data, etc folders in your content Directory - My Library or whatever you use.

Yes. In my Content Library I have the default "My DAZ 3D Library" for all of my DAZ Store product purchases, and I then have a separate folder titled "My Renderosity Library" so that I can keep track of the Renderosity- purchased stuff, for updates and so on, since DIM doesn't keep track of that stuff. I can see both main folders, and I can follow the file paths all the way down to where the (e.g.) .obj should be, but it's not visible in the directory. Only the parent folder is visible.

If you are seeing the \Runtime\Geometries folder then the Runtime was not merged with the existing Runtime.

OK, thanks for the "lightbulb" suggestion there.

Main main folders are indeed showing as mentioned. But, what I needed to do was go in and manually add the poser format stuff in the directory as per your suggestion. So it could see the folders, but was ingnoring the Poser Format content.

Thanks for the suggestion. SOLVED! Woohoo!

    Hey Richard,

FTR, in my other content folder (non-DIM), I have sub-folders listed first to separate the categories such as "Character", "Wardrobe" etc, for my own organizational purposes. I then have runtime folders within each of those, for that category.

Then, if I understand you correctly, you should have the Character, Wardrobe etc. folders set as Content Directories and not the folder that contains them.

Right, thus the problem, in which I created with my own "organized" system. I had the main folder listed in my content library, but not those individual categories, so they weren't showing up. Had to add those separately.

There's another thread going where a member isn't happy with DIM, and frankly, I understand. DIM does a great job of cataloging and following the status of your installed content, but it does it essentially on the old installation hierarchy. Man, I wish DAZ, as they did with the new standardized polys in G3 to match Z-Brush, etc., would take the same initiative with Content Installation and standardize it. Make a standard for runtime installation that has a leader tag/folder/metadata placement of each product type. What you see in Studio is on the right track, especially with Smart Content. But the industry as a whole needs to get on the same page and apply some logic to the installation process. Yeah, everyone would groan initially as I have a some point or another, but to have all the "Characters" go to one location on installation with the folder actually called "Characters", and metadata to support it would be ridiculously logical. Have all the "Environment and Sets" go to another, "Wardrobe" to another, Props, etc., how sweet would that all be?!?

Currently, when the metadata's on track it works pretty well within Studio. But if you do look at the folders on your machine, there's more than a few WTH moments there. Anyways, I digress.

That's the theory, but I've never been able to get it to work with any 4.x version of studio. Worked great in 3.x.

There is no difference how Poser content works or is installed and mapped in DS 4.x than in 3.x.  Do not have 'nested' content libraries mapped in DS, for example I have my content divided into logical folders based on the store/site they are from then sub category libraries in those, I map only the sub category libraries.
