@Padone, can you say anything about how this could affect exporting materials from DS to Blender, if at all?

I can't read mdl/osl so this makes no difference to me. At bitbucket we have Midnight Arrow who can read mdl a little and made useful suggestions to improve the material conversion, that we started to implement. The process is slow because the suggestions by Midnight don't always work fine so I have to understand why and fix them.
We now have the color effects that weren't considered before. Next better volumes and fresnel.
