Parameters Pane > Mesh Smoothing
Set collision item, smoothing iterations, collision iterations
Turn off Interactive Update if it bogs down your viewport while posing.
If you get weird distortions you can try switching smoothing type from "Base Shape Matching" to "Generic",
I don't seem to have an option for Mesh Smoothing under parameters :(
In this case, you have to create a smoothing modifier for that object first. With the object selected in the Scene Tab, go to Edit - Figure - Geometry - Apply Smoothing Modifier. Then you have it.
If there isn't already a smoothing modifier, Edit > Object > Geometry > Apply Smoothing Modifier.
Hm, I always use Edit - Figure - .... does the same.
What is the difference between Figure and Object in the Edit menu?
Figures have some extra options involving rigging, but as far as Smoothing Modifiers are concerned I don't think there's any difference.
thanks guys! I also found out that there's a smoothing option under the surfaces tab. Some OBJ imports seem to need that dialed WAY down... the particular mesh needed smoothing, but only 10% when it came in at 89%

The smoothing option in the Surface pane controls whether DS varies the shading to fake rounding and hide sharp edges (try looking at a human figure without it), while the Smoothing Modifier actually changes the mesh. It's like the difference between bump/normal (changes only the shading) and displacement (changes the mesh)
The 'global' smoothing usually doesn't need to be altered for most things...unless you need a faceted surface...like a gemstone. It's also in degrees, not percent...
