I was at a pub quiz earlier this evening and paid £2.80 per pint! That is cheap though, even for the UK.

Thank you Steve! and many many thanks to DAZsmiley

P.S. Usually I use only gen 4 in Carrara but can I use Genesis 2 in Carrara? Thanks.

I don't use Genesis characters, mostly because I have a lot invested in Gen4 - clothes, hair, morphs, mocaps, etc. - and I mostly do animations so the mocaps in particular are important.  I defer to users like Diomede who know the ins and outs.

PhilW & Unified Brain - Right $3 is only half a pint at the pub. cheeky  I buy big discount stuff like that and just throw it onto the storage drive, thinking "Someday I'll find a use for that".

Thanks Steve. I'll try to use gen 6 but I agree with you ..I love Gen 4

Good call, even though I also like Gen 4. Just as an FYI:

If you are having issues with things not working properly directly within Carrara, like fitting clothes to the character, try doing that part in Daz Studio, and then saving the result to the library so that you may access it again in Carrara.

Some things just don't seem to work properly.

So when they don't work, I look at what it is that's not working, and perform that function in Daz Studio. Here's a small example:

I have a specific character shape I want to use. When the clothing I want to use gets "Fit To" the figure in Carrara, it doesn't fit correctly. When this happens, I go into Daz Studio and recreate my character shape and save it as a Character Preset for future use. Then I fit the clothing I want to the figure, which seems to always work really well in Daz Studio. After the clothing is fit to the figure, I select only the clothing from the Scene tab, and Save As > (scroll to the botton of the list) Support Asset > Figure asset, if I remember correctly. Then I navigate to where the original clothing product is in the library, and save it in that same spot, with some sort of change in the name. I usually just add my character's initials at the end of the original name.

Sometimes this works very well, but sometimes it still isn't that great. If it doesn't work well, try saving the whole scene (just the figure and its clothing and/or hair, etc.,) as a Scene (DUF) someplace where you'll be able to access it in Carrara, which could be in the library (I like this option so we can load from the Content Tab in Carrara), or any other location, and just use File > Import in Carrara to bring it in.

Carrara Pro is still only version 8.5.1.19, so "Genesis" and the whole DUF system is still very young. It works great, but I hope that, someday, it gets better ;)

    Sorry for the lengthy ramble

Wow, I'm hanging out at the wrong baseball games!  $5.98 for a beer?  I have to pay $9.00 for a Bud Lite at Nats Park.  $8.00 for a Natty Bo in Camden Yards.  Not even sure either beverage qualifies as beer.  Fortunately, these days there are more options, although those tend to be more expensive.

I should say that I will use any figure depending on the circumstances.  Some of the older figures that I have used within the last 5 or 6 months include the Kids 4, Vicki 3, Simon from Poser 7, Pumpkin Jack, Gobbles, and the RDNA unidwarf.  Speaking of the unidwarf, did the RDNA goblinz and unidwarf not transfer over to Daz with the merger?     However, if I am just starting a project with a generic human figure that I will be doctoring up, I generally start with genesis 2 these days.

Apparently, my experience with Genesis 2 has been different from Dartanbecks.  If I am rendering in Carrara, then I have the least difficulty if I do as much as possible directly in Carrara.  I do use the transfer utility in Studio if I am making custom conforming clothing.  For me, the kinds of problems that Dart reports only occur with the very earliest content for the original genesis that used external dsf files.  The irony was that that was the Genesis content included with Carrara 8.5.  I remember complaining about it in the thread I maintained while experimenting with Genesis.  Might save people having to reinvent the wheel.  Please remember that this is an older thread so some of the issues reported may have been updated elsewhere.

I recently bought the Genesis 2 Clones for Genesis 1, and they don't work at all in Carrara since the Auto-fit in Carrara hasn't been updated at all, so it doesn't initialize a difference between one Genesis and another. So we'd need to do it in Daz Studio.

Oh, OK.  I see were Dart and I are coming from.  Genesis clothes to Genesis 2 may have poke through if done in Carrara.  Carrara will project morphs and conform, just not as well as if converted to duf within Studio.  Here is an example.  Genesis Val3Dart's clothing set Dragon Rage to the G2M character Garen.  If I load a G2M character in Carrara and conform this set designed for Genesis, the autofit will project some morphs and conform, but you can see some poke through in the lats and back.

    .

So, similar to Dart but a little different, when I acquire a new clothing set, I load it in Studio, conform it to G2, and use Save As : Wearable Preset.  Dart uses Save As : Support Asset.  Probably just a matter of personal taste. In the futue, I load this wearable preset directly in Carrara.  Have converted quite a lot.  For example, here is the folder in my object browser that contains hair designed for Vicki 4 that I have converted for use with G2F.  Once converted, I load directly in Carrara and conform in Carrara.

That $6 price was actually a couple of years ago, and I'm pretty sure the price is higher today at Minute Maid Park (Houston Astros).  But I have to tell my story ... I worked at a large design/construction company, mostly refineries and chemical plants.  The engineering department at Coors Brewing in Golden, Colorado, visited our company to discuss potential projects that they might need help on (yeah, its like a chemical plant).  At that time I was in sales, and involved in showing them around.  The Dept. head and a couple of his staff decided they wanted to visit the large Budweiser Brewery here in Houston, a red carpet tour place with a sampling room at the end of the tour.  In the sampling room with lots of beer taps, the boss walks up to the cute barmaid and orders a Coors.  (A Budweiser Brewery, remember).  Without a word, she turns and half fills a mug with Bud, then tops it off with water.  She hands it to the Coors manager, saying, "That's as close as I can get."  All three Coors guys laugh uncontrollably.  I suspect that young lady is now a VP at Bud.

SteveK, that is a great story!

I sometimes order "beer-flavored water" in my favorite establishment.  They won't serve anything but domestic craft beer (no Bud/Miller/Coors, etc.), and when I moved here they were the only place open in this neighborhood.  For a long time, the lowest alcohol content beer on tap was over 6%.  For context, an average beer is 5% and a Guiness is about 4.2%.  People from out of town looking for a place before the baseball game would come in and ask for a light beer.  They would just give them the lightest colored beer, which might be 7-8% alcohol depending on the beer rotation.  (I live 2 blocks from the stadium.  So, after many unfortunate outcomes, my favorite establishment finally decided to include a lower alcohol beer in its tap rotation.  I can enjoy that for a 3 hour baseball game - still will not serve Bud/Coors/Miller. When I want to enjoy a long game in this sports bar, I order "beer-flavored water" and the bartender knows what I mean.

We had free pints at my Daughter's (Totally Awesome!!!) Wedding reception at a very nice Green By Packer bar, but alas, I was on Grandson duty so I refrained. Rosie makes me this killer water. It tastes like fresh-fallen snow... I am so totally addicted to this stuff! She freezes the bottle (half full of her killer filtered water), then filters in the rest. Sounds boring, I know... but that's my beverage of choice more times than not these days.

Steve K - love that story!

Dart - glad the wedding went well, I sure you made memories that will stay with you forever! (even without the beer,,,)

£3.40 ($4.50 approx) for a pint of session beer (3.8%-4.0% ish) around here. Hooky is my local. There's a Weatherspoons in the next town - 12 miles or so away - sells it cheaper and has lots of guest beers too, but after the effort of getting there, you can't drink much anyhow. No idea about stadium prices - tickets are way expensive and I have no interest in footy anyhow.

When it comes to figures, I normally pose and clothe in DS and save as scene subset for Carrara. Partly it's because the Smart Content  stuff works so much better in DS, when it comes to finding all the accessories and bits & bobs that go with an outfit. I don't much go in for autofitting, usually I select the figure to go with the outfit (I've got a reasonable selection of gen 4 / Genesis / Genesis 2 characters, allthough very few Genesis 3). For my current wip I need zombies (adults & possibly teens/kids), monsters, soldiers, lab techs and a school mistress, so I'm actively keeping an eye out...

tnx UB, Nice to get back in here when I can. I'm a-good-sort-of-busy, but gotta surrender a few non-income generating luxuries for a while. Odd that they moved that thread, but OK, I follow the other NPR thread too - both show exceptional stuff for those of us that like that style! Amazingly creative folks around here!

It may hurt less if you look at DS as a handy Daz3D file format converter/fixer for Carrara...

Hello, Ringo.  Best wishes.  Enjoy your products.

In the forum at that other site, a Carraraist reported calling Daz customer service and being told that Daz was not currently working on Carrara, but would not comment on the future.  That is the last official word that I am aware of.  So sadly...

Hope you have had a chance to see the progress Misty made with G3 characters, and Philemo's bridge to VWD.  Still some cool innovations by the community.

I think what you're seeing there is the combination of 60% off in the DO sale + 30% PC+ discount + the PA discount. I don't think there's any particular significance to it.

Carrara 8.5 pro is 114$ for me today. But 8.5 Beta is 285$ as usual.

The price has been this low before.  But I'm not seeing how price determines the viability of Carrara.  If they gave it away for free, I would still be using it.

And further, if a low price means that DAZ never updates Carrara, I'll still be using it.  Carrara has a stable platform, a relatively friendly interface, and some cool features and plugins that will serve me for years to come.

If you are PC+, there are a huge number of older items available today for 90-98% off (for me it's about 30 pages).  The balance of PC+ items are not discounted quite that much, but still a respectable amount.
