Well, I answered my own :), and I believe Dorseyland answered Slimer's two questions, so I think we're good, Cho.

Yeah, the need for speed seems to be a common theme there. My own take is that quality takes time (especially when people are talking about fifteen minutes being too long! :)).

Hmm, I just re-read the rules on page 1 where our esteemed host said he would be a stickler on the number of freebies, AND that the driver's clothes (and car) had to be freebies. At great expense ($0), I have another render of the scene cooking with a different body suit. What's the protocol here, do I submit a second post, leaving the original intact? That's what I read in the general rules.

Note2: I changed the bodysuit to make it a freebie. I changed the light set too. The UE2 set I was using was very touchy. I would change one thing in the scene, and I was swarmed with fireflies! This set of distant lights is easier to use for outdoor scenes with only one light casting a shadow.

Still good! Funny how only the change of a light can make things so different. The tarmac looks blacker and the flying car looks less orangey.

As the car prop's wheels don't turn, it's a good thing she's in a power slide, steering with the throttle! SnowSultan didn't think much of his smoke plane tiles when he posted them, but in this case, they were essential!

SIXDS and SLIMER, not sure why your questions didn't get a response from our always-alert host -- he's probably in court trying to prove that he never ordered $4,000 worth of blenders (or Blender plug-ins).

SLIMER, I've never seen the other Generation 4 figures treated as V4 morphs, but the DAZ figures always end up counted as something other than a freebie, so just go with that until someone else can be more specific. The Freebie Challenge, like most 3D art contests, is NOT considered commercial, so that restriction on models doesn't apply.

SIXDS, you solved your problem in a terrific render, but you could have located the texture mat for the car logo, "disguised" it in Photoshop (like VW becoming WW, for example), and reimported it on its own primitive BEFORE the render. But I've never given car logos a second thought -- we're promoting the car, in a way, and if the modeller didn't worry, why should you?

Up to Rob, Music and/or Chohole to make a final call, of course.
    ...

Sorry about that... Family comes first.

I'll look at the entries from SixDs and Slimer_J_Spud tomorrow.

As for the questions - Dorseyland gave the answers I would have, but just to confirm for anyone who still wants an "official" word:

For this month, I'm treating G4/A4/S4 as "no-count" items - neither paid nor free. (Likewise SF4/H4/F4, M5/V5, and M6/V6.) Our esteemed host can make a ruling for the permanent rules, but I believe this is the spirit of the rules currently in place.

I treat the Challenges as a non-commercial activity. However, some freebie creators might disagree, so read the license documents just to be sure. I know that Mamota accepts contests as non-commercial usage, which is why the driver in this month's banner image is wearing a mamomamo outfit.

It's up to you whether you want to show car badges/logos in your renders. If you do show them, though, please don't mix them up! (I'm reminded of one relatively-recent anime where the musical instruments shown were very carefully researched ... and then somebody drew a Fender logo on a Les Paul. Don't be that guy.)

Thanks for the kudoes, DanaTA. and Dorseyland.

As for editing the texture map, that was my first thought, too. There was just one small problem - there wasn't one! The model was not created for use in DAZ Studio, but the creator made it available in .obj format, so I could import it. But the textures didn't come through properly. I opened it in Silo to see if I could find the problem, but it opened there exactly as it should have, textured and all. Looking at the textures, only three actual texture maps had been used for select parts (licence plate, rear lights, one colour map) The rest were all procedural, including, surprisingly, the logo. He/she must have somehow managed to create detailed material zones in the shape of the logo. Anyway, I wasn't prepared to delve too deeply into reworking the model for the sake of a render, but maybe another time. The UV map for it is one of those multi-layered monsters you sometimes see (3DS, maybe?). In any event, there's always more than one way to skin a (reference deleted in deference to Wendy :)) with this stuff.

Um, are you using Daz or Poser or something else? In Daz you can use the surface selector tool to select certain polys to create a new surface group, and once you have the new group, hide them that way (by turning down the opacity). Sometimes though, because daz is a pita, I can't find "create new surface group" as an option. Not sure if this is useful to you but someone might find it handy.

Okay, now that I have all my ducks in a line (I think), here's my take on the theme.

    Title: The Lesson
a.k.a Maybe you can drive my car

Rendered in DAZ Studio 4.6 with 3Delight

"... cars parked along the sides of the street like this, you need to keep your wits about you. You never know when some idiot is going to pull out suddenly without looking or signaling, or open their door in front of you. And you see those kids on the sidewalk? You never know when one is going to dart out between the cars, to chase a ball or something. Or a dog. Or a cat. Now up ahead you can see a stop sign. You need to come to a complete stop there. Not a rolling stop, a complete stop. Its a four way stop, so you need to know who has the right-of-way if other vehicles are at the intersection. If you arrive at the intersection first, you have the right-of-way. The vehicle on the right always has the right-of-way, if both vehicles arrive at about the same time. That means if a vehicle arrives at the same time to your left. you have the right-of-way. But you can never trust that the other driver knows that, so you you need to watch they don't pull out first. Now we'll be turning right here, so signal your turn ..."

Love the expressions - "don't break my car" and "I know all this"...

    ENTRY ACCEPTED

(Oh, and a texture set for Am BabyT that I didn't know about!)

ROFL! I preferred to leave the villains anonymous behind a smoked windscreen. We know that Racer X is really Speed Racer's older brother, and that he's been secretly protecting Speed all these years, so it can't be him shooing at Trixie. We can say these villains were hired by Cruncher Block in revenge for losing to Speed.

The render was a little dark on my screen - I had a bit of trouble spotting a few things (such as the ponytail). But I eventually saw them all... except for the SciFi weapons pack and the Holsters for Barracuda, so I'm not counting them in your total.

One artistic suggestion: You might want to tighten up the scene a bit; trim away some of the background and let the foreground fill the render window. (Unless you wanted to show a sterile and empty setting, of course. Who am I to second-guess your art?)

The holster is on Panther's left thigh, and the Sci Fi Weapons pack is where the Barracuda (Panther's Pistol) comes from. It's the big gold gun his left hand.

Hey Rob, did you see my last post?

Where you pointed out where the pistol and holster are? Yes, but I already accepted your entry so it wouldn't make any difference whether I saw them or not...
  • There are renders you create for fun, and then there are the ones you create because its IMPORTANT. This one goes in the second category. I miss my dad. Since the theme was announced, I have been looking for the "right" truck. The one in this render is about as close as it gets. Dad's pickup truck was not quite as rusty, but it was pretty bad; no doors, torn vinyl seats, rusted out holes in the floorboard. But the most important part of finding a freebie truck with the right "feel" was the wood rails out of scrap lumber that dad added to the truck bed, for hauling wood from the wood lot. When I look at this render, I can almost smell the truck's peculiar odor of stale beer, sweat, fresh cut wood, earthworms, fish tackle, wet wool, his cologne, and fabric softener.

We were not quite this poor.. we did have shoes. But dad worked three jobs to put us in fancy things like the fairy costume the little girl is wearing to make us look like we had more than we did, and to spoil us. It was the early eighties, and many homes built in the 60s had oil for heat- but then the energy crisis hit, and the cost of petroleum products went through the roof. Many families did as our dad did, and built a chimney and added a woodstove to offset the use of oil. On autumn evenings and weekends after coming home from one of three jobs, he would then go over the wood lot and cut trees with his chainsaw. He did all the work by himself as the only kids at home were us two girls...

But then when he had gotten a big pile of wood ready, he would bring us over to the lot in "daddy's truck" and have us toss the logs into the bed, and he would stand in the back trying not to get hit, and quickly stack them to fit more so we didnt have to make as many trips. When it was all loaded, he would let me (I was 9 or so) , test drive the truck in forward and reverse while he watched, to see if the load shifted before we took it on the road. The lot was'nt more than a quarter mile from home, but he didnt want to make a hazard on the public road as it was a heavily travelled highway with a lot of... hmm.... how shall we say.....not "country smart" drivers from the city driving too fast and not paying attention. ;-)

We were BOTH quite spoiled little girls, but maybe not this naughty! We had no idea how hard he worked to get us things, only that he was gone a lot. We wished that he was around, more than we wanted stuff, to be honest. My sister and I argued and bickered a lot, over little things, and I wish we had given the poor man a break and instead enjoyed this family time working together. FWIW I was a complete tomboy and did have a boys nickname, but it wasn't Chucky... it was "Clyde" . I kid you not!

And so, with that being said, I give you:

"Baby, You CAN"T Drive My Car!

    The "Fairy Princess":

"Chucky get outta dat dwiva seat its MY tuun to dwive Daddy's twuck! Wight Daddy? Imma good heppa see how many wogs I caweed? You awways say good heppas getta dwive the twuck! Myyyyyyy tuun to dwive, ha,ha sissy!

    .....

'No' Daddy? Whaddya mean 'NO', DADDDY! ITS NOT FAIYA! *STOMP*

But Daddy I AM TOO BIG NUF to dwive the twuck! It's not faiya CHUCKY aways getsa dwive...

I'm gonna wun away to the faiwees and be dems pwincess you just wait n see! Den you gonna be sowwy. *Pout*"

Big sister, aka "Chucky", caressing the chainsaw...
    'under her breath '

"Please, fairies, take her, and don't give her back!"

    :-)

  • Oh BOO HISS! This is what I get for chatting while I am reviewing my renders... I miss noticing details!

I had tried to run Blender yesterday on a completely different project while waiting for Daz to render this scene, and accidentally set sub surf for too high in Blender and ended up with 4 million polys, which completely crashed my whole system to the point that I had to take out the laptop battery to unfreeze it and reboot. I lost all the changes I had made on my Daz scene, since I usually only save after the render is finished, to make sure I like the changes I have made.. One change I had made was to fix the camera to make it DOF with a nice sharp focal length/f-stop setting, and I see now I forgot I had done that when making my fixes, and I am back to slightly fuzzy default settings. Plus I had changed the characters positioning because they originally looked to be floating, and I see I missed fixing some things with that. If anyone has any other feedback to add, I am very new to this and appreciate the insight! I am glad we get to post our fixed versions. I am also thankful that we are allowed more than one entry- I was able to work on fun, silly kinds of things while I hoped I could find the items for this one. :-)

PS, RobKelk, I completely had forgotten about your post suggesting "Baby You Can't Drive My Car" as an image title, if you want me to change mine I will!

There are renders you create for fun, and then there are the ones you create because its IMPORTANT.

    :-)

On suggestion from me...change you saving strategy! Save often. Rename the file with a trailing numbering system so you can go back to the version you wish if something goes too far from your vision. Always save before you render! There have been so many that have lamented not saving first, then the render freezes and all is lost.

It's a lovely render, and I can tell it means a great deal to you.

Alas, I'm going to have to reject it for being off-theme...
But I'm putting a spin on it. As the Beatles quote in the challenge title implies, show us somebody driving a car ... or at least behind the wheel.

Nobody's actually in the truck's cab, so the image doesn't quite fit.

If you can re-work the scene so somebody's behind the wheel, I'll definitely take another look at it.
