URGENT NEED FOR VIDEO CARD REPLACEMENT

Thanks 3Drendero, but I don't want to mess with BIOS settings.  My vision isn't that great right now. The shop I use is very close, so if I was going to do that, I could pop the CPU into them.  I'd need a cable, don't have a VGA one. I think I want a proper video card for rendering and my other 2D graphics. So will continue to try and source something for the interim and into next year.

Thanks again... if my eyes were younger, I'd probably have a go just because I could!

I meant with the video card removed, if it's doing that, I doubt your card is causing it, could be a RAM stick

Sorry, I missed that bit. I could not remove my card. Eyes are not good enough right now. I'd be worried I could not get it seated back into its slot. And trying out VGA by turning it on in BIOS just is too scary right now.  I just want a card that works. Quadro K2200 has been a nightmare.

You can do simple tests yourself on your system to check RAM and HDD

also check for driver conflicts ... do you have a webcam installed by any chance?

uninstall completely and reinstall the correct video driver for your card, the wrong driver may be being used.

it can be frustrating and I know it doesn't help but if I get any problems on my system I do a total fresh reinstall of the OS...

then note one by one as I reinstall my various software and drivers which one may cause a problem if any.

my latest one I tracked down about three weeks ago was a faulty SATA SSD cable, took me a week to find that one.

hope you find a solution soon yes

Hi Stezza. I had hoped the new hard drives that were just installed would have cured the problem, but it didn't. I am now convinced it's a W10 issue with this Quadro. I have rolled up and down with the drivers. It performs better with the original ones, vs the latest. The people who have had trouble all tried different drivers. It's one of their biggest complaints on the Nvidia forum. Nvidia does not care about this old Quadro from 2014 any longer. They have moved on to later generations of Quadros and expect people to just do the same.

    No webcam....no microphone.

Sorry for being so late to the discussion.

Silene, do you pretty much just stick with Carrara? That's an important question to answer.

Like Wendy says, you don't really need a powerful GPU for Carrara. Carrara will be using that beautiful i7 processor instead.

Integrated graphics are not something you add later. Either your motherboard has it or not. You can tell if there's a monitor port on the back of your computer that isn't on the graphics card.

I am very poor, as most of you know. So when I built mmy Carrara machines, I went for the Best CPU I could get, but graphics can be anything that runs OpenGL - Anything!

I always grabbed the cheapest thing that I could get, looking for the best GPU for those ultra-cheap prices.

"GTX" "RTX" are terms that will cause you to spend more than necessary for Carrara - but they are the best of the best in the nVidia realm.

ATI makes good cards too, and can sometimes be found at lower pricing.

But please know that: For Carrara, you don't need Cuda Cores, you don't need xxxGB of GPU memory. These things are for other things - not Carrara!

    Thanks, Dart!

I sitll do 2D graphics and use PS CS6 daily, with up to 15 layers and usually have no problem. The psd files are only tops about 50MB, then get converted to pdf and sent for printing. Trade banner stand stuff, etc.  My Carrara renders will be 300dpi and trade banner size. Probably similar resolution and sizes as to what Headwax prints for his amazing art.

I am happy with my cores and they do make renders fast. My new hard drives are very efficient and copying things to and from them is lightening fast. The video card just cuts out at the worst times.

No animation for me, I just want a card that will work.  I do have a VGA plug on a card on the back, it just isn't listed having been disabled in BIOS by the PC Specialists people that sold me the build in 2016.  I had to tick a box that said if I was a gamer or a designer. I ended up with the Quadro as I said I was a graphic designer.  Maybe they thought I was an engineer or something vs a graphics designer. Most of the complaints about my Quadro, which is now 7 years old in design years, were from engineers.

So time to move on.  I would be happy with something that works with Carrara and DS as I have to open DS to do Misty's G3 conversions and I sometimes do renders there and insert them into scenes for book covers... just easier sometimes as you pointed out. Animals particularly. I spent so much time on my wolves and now the DS ones look even better with no work!

That's it.  I am getting close to making a decision based on the guys at the shop, but I would like to know what will get me by for DS as well as Carrara.  I can't mess about with this seriously until after my eye surgery now, which will be well after your Thanksgiving. Lots of other things going on here.

Thanks for the advice!  I just want something adequate that will be a workhorse.

unfortunately your eyes the issue but I still think simply removing your card would indeed enable the motherboard graphics, maybe unplugging it's power pin cable would even be sufficient

usually just a littlie tab on the side you squeeze to pull it out

I think I will drop this into the shop next week if I can and have them try this. THanks!

Let the store/IT support setup the BIOS for you. If you yank out the Quadro while the BIOS still has a manually disabled iGPU, the screen will stay black until the BIOS is reset to the default settings with a reset button/jumper/battery. Quadro is still better than GeForce for most graphics apps, they run faster and more stable. The issues you have the same with Quadro or GeForce. I had them on both types of cards on work laptops and older Windows versions...

THanks, I wasn't going to do the swopping over myself, as Wendy points out. EYES! I can't imagine every Quado and GeFOrce cardholder has these issues. I had no issues with the Quado with the original build. It wasn't until much further down the line when it upgraded to W10 that it got bad. THen after the upgrade to W10, my hard drive crashed. After rebuild the Quadro issue was STILL there.  So I am firmly convinced it's a K2200 issue as it's so widely moaned about. The latest drivers were the worst.  Others can't all be having this trouble with every Quadro or GeForce. However, I am quite put off by them now and will be looking at other brands.

But that's for after eye operation so I can see WTF I am doing.  The eye I had done already is so clear, I am amazined I could see anything before.

Here is an benchmark overview of your built in graphics card. While the numbers are low, it does seem to run every 3D app, encode video and display up to 4K, pretty good for a 0$ graphics card. Give it a try... https://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-HD-Graphics-4600.86106.0.html

Hiya 3DrenderoWendy, and Dart and EVERYONE!,  Just had cataract op on Thursday, but this new high-tech toric lens in the 'other eye' is like WOW.  I can see with this eye already and almost as good as with the other one done 2 months ago without the astigmatism correction. But I have better reading glasses now temporarily and was able to follow through with some of this.

There was an onboard graphics processing unit included with my ASUS build. I emailed PC Specialist and they got straight back to me. My build does not support hybrid graphics, so as it had a dedicated GPU in a slot enabled, the integrated one did not show in my device manager. No messing with BIOS needed.  I will try after a couple of more days or more of eye rest to switch over as I want to also give it a good vacuuming out as well since I am removing the GPU.

The ports for the onboard graphics card were waaaay at the top of the CPU and so discrete as everything is black. I have a lot of USB ports and such crammed in there and they all had labels, etc. I thought the other slots were for added monitors or other peripherals. I was looking down below in the slots area with my poor vision. Doh? My bad.

So anyways as the specs are adequate per 3Drendero's post,  I will test out and see if the machine behaves.  The PC Specialist people are going to help me source a card in the future. They were not surprised that I have had such terrible luck with the Quadro GPU. Hmmmm.... odd that it happened just out of warranty!  I was told not to spend a lot on a newer model card as my machine is several years old now. So I will ust go for efficiency.

Anyways, I am getting there and I do want a card that will give me a better viewport when working in Cararara, especially for lighting scenes.

Cheers, again for the help. Sorry to have been floundering around like a blind woman!
