Fix the Geometry Editor

[the Geometry Editor] It's crashes more than any other part
and it's so random the only way to defeat it
is to save before you do anything.
Sometimes it crashes while you're deleting
Sometimes while moving a surface slider.
I usually try to save before deleting hidden polygons
but this was just "oh you touched something"
I was not deleting, was not moving something, creating a surface.
I was adjusting the cutout opacity.
And this is just crazy and frustrating to say the least
I lost a whole lot of texture position.
This has existed as long as the cursor will disapear if you bump the right mouse button

  • Random issues are extremely hard to fix - if you can give steps that trigger a crash Daz can look at it and almost certainly fix it, but there is nothing in your post that they could get hold of (and not everyone has this kind of experience). Also don't forget that if you can sort out a reproducible bug you need to report it - posting in the forum is not addressing Daz.

  • Due to the consistancy of the problem (there are a lot of problems in the geometry editor*), I would venture that it's a specific data storage/access in the information about the item being worked on. Daz builds a record of the geometry of an item when you first activate the tool (either the currently selected item or the first one you select) ... Note this is extremely obvious if you have a large number of items selected when you activate the tool.
The fact it did it years ago and still does suggests it's an issue with the deep parts of the program, like taking an hour or just freezing when attempted to delete a complex item or group.

*note except for when it crashes ... it's a marvelous tool.

As for Daz being unaware of the problem

Currently using MS Windows 11 with Win64 version of DS, I use the Geometry Editor very often. Until lately, I have not had any problems.

However, recently when attempting to extract parts from a loaded model to create new UV maps by removing undesired parts of the mesh, the Geometry Editor would crash Daz Studio entirely.

After many hours upon hours of research and no useful information anywhere, I decided to try something new.

Before starting DS, I right-clicked on the desktop icon and changed the compatibility mode to Windows 8. I do not know what memory allocation or other settings are changed, but DS no longer crashes (as often) when working  in Geometry Editor with very large mesh models. The number of poly's in the current model is just over106k.

Lastly, using the Wireframe view for the Viewport helped too.

All of this seemed to help enough that I could get all of the UV's exported with many less crashes.

    Hope someone finds this useful!

It happens to me on occassion. I use it all the time.

Updated to the latest version, however, there have been times when I was expecting DS to crash from it, and it didn't. So maybe it's working better now?

One thing - it is incredibly handy to be able to do such things without 'breaking' the figure (I use it for clothing and conforming items on figures) - keeping the rigging intact. So while it is a nuissance when it crashed DS, I've always just appreciated that I can do such things without exporting to madeling software and messing around with rigging issues.

Still... it's a bummer when one has been working along - especially if we're nearly done, and... Blink!
