Subsurface Scatter shader - Strange artifacts when zooming out and rendering.

I'm trying to use the Subsurface Scatter shader, but am having trouble with renders.
Please see the attached .png file.
When I render close-ups of the head and shoulders of the figure, everything looks fine. However, when I attempt to render the entire figure, strange shaded artifacts cover the entire figure like a checkerboard.
Can anyone help?

You need to adjust some of the settings - Shading Rate, for the SSS shader not in Render Settings, and/or Shading Scale. You need to adjust all surfaces that have the same groupID value to match, if you adjust only one it may not have the desired effect: the easiest way to do this is to use the Surface Seelction Tool to right-click on one of the skin areas, then from the menu click Select Surfaces with Value and then in the dialogue box select GroupID from the pop-up list.
