Do DS Dynamic Cloths work in Carrara?

I always think of these things when I'm working on another project... %-P

Do dynamic cloths from DS (or even from Poser, for that matter) work in Carrara? Does anything special have to be done with them to work?

Again, I'm one of those DS users who's testing the Carrara waters, so if this is a Carrara 101 question, please excuse me. I have some DS dynamic clothes but they were a bit dodgy on my 32-bit PC. Now that I have access to a 64-bit Mac, I'm trying out a few things I never had the computing power to try...

Any help would, of course, be greatly appreciated.

I have just tested the free python script “Dyn to morph” with a simulation made in Poser (sorry, I don't know DS).
See the process and result here:

The actual dynamic themselves, no. That is done via a plug-in specific to Daz Studio. However ... once the drape (the dynamic part) is done you can (in fact should, really) 'freeze' the dynamic item which creates a prop/object. Now that you should be able to export from DS and import into Cararra.

If I'm not mistaken, bigh (one of our active members here) has demonstrated that you can even use dynamics animations from DS into Carrara, and you don't need that script. Just save to DUF.

you can also do soft body drapes in carrara, animation not really effective except on unrigged physic motion objects
more useful for table cloths curtains and such

I personally have stopped using dynamic clothes. I used to make them in the Poser cloth room (which I preferred over Daz Studio) but lately the PZ3 import process has become too difficult.

In Daz Studio, their latest version 4 of the dynamic cloth control doesn't work as well as the DS 3 version. Beside, Optitex has stopped making new clothes for a while now.

correct - if it drapes in DS then it will work in C8.5
    if you save DUF
you open it - not import ..

Yes, I noticed that with the new characters, animation was not well in coformity with Carrara, but until generation 4, all is perfect and I still do not see where is the improvement of the new generation compared to generation 4….
I speak as a user about C8 and not about C8.5.

    Hi Dudu_00001

As a relatively new Poser user I started trying to use Dynamic clothing about a week or so ago.

I put a couple of very short videos on the Poser forum showing some renders.

But the information you provided helped me immensely to try going further and using the simulations in Carrara. I knew it could be done but didn't know how until your posts on this thread. Many thanks!

Unfortunately, I was using the new weight-mapped Roxie character and have had odd results in opening saved Poser projects in Carrara.

Sometimes I get no figure at all. Other times I get a figure but with wrong proportions so that there is lots of poke-through. (In some attempts I changed the figures's skinning to 'Poser Traditional' but the clothing fit is always wrong).

Here is the video link for my Carrara attempts:

    http://youtu.be/OJ3DCea_EKg

(The earlier videos from the Poser thread are:

    http://youtu.be/JLFLgqKan9M and http://youtu.be/nZIOpQ3DnNo )

    The videos are all short!

Here is an image (sorry it's from Poser but it shows the garment I was bringing to Carrara)

    Beautiful simulations!
    Happy that helped you.
Did you try to import Genesis in Poser with the free DSON Importer for Poser then to import it in Carrara with a dynamic clothing?
I would be interested to know the result because I don't have C8.5…

    Hi DUDU,

Thank you for the generous comment and for providing the link.

No, I haven't tried Genesis in Poser. My hardware is very low spec and is 32 bit.

I find that I can't get full scenes (buildings, etc) to work well in Poser so I just do very short animations and poses.

In Carrara, I usually get 'out of memory' problems with Genesis/(2). I'm aware that a good deal of investigation has been done to make them work but my PC's limitations are very real.

Carrara is, for me, the best program for high-quality figures, and scenery with animation.

As you know I spent a long time trying to get Bullet soft cloth to work in Carrara - and still feel embarrassed about it. But I'm really pleased with this pipeline from Poser's cloth room to Carrara.

My plan is either to learn to rig traditional Poser-style figures or to look at G4 figures. So near yet so far!

I don't know whether you took a look at the two earlier videos - they showed the cloth mesh in Hexagon.

PS - your own video was excellent and an inspiration.

Yes, I saw your two videos with the dresses made with Hexagon, good work!
I'm like you, I uses Poser as a great plugin and not to create my projects.
Last Saturday, I followed a tutorial on Renderosity to convert conforming clothes into dynamic clothes, that doesn't work with all commercial clothing but it is very useful all the same.

That's an interesting tutorial. I only skimmed quickly through it but it reminded me that , so far, I'm only using the minimum settings and haven't learned about the dynamic groups yet.

Regarding your earlier post - I wasn't refusing to try Genesis. I would need to make a quick garment and learn to use the DSON importer so I can't get it done immediately.

I get to play with my 3d programs in short bursts - usually late in the day- and sometimes need to leave things for a while. Maybe I can agree to try it 'soon'?

    Hi Dudu_0001,

OK the weather being really bad was my excuse for trying out Genesis in Poser.

    The good news:

    (1) I got Genesis into Poser

    (2) When the scene came into Carrara, the clothing had no poke-through

    The bad news:

    (1) The draping was unsuccessful with the kind of mesh I used before

    (2) The Genesis character mis-behaved in Carrara - its rigging seems to have been altered.

    OUCH!
I realize that the pipeline Poser/Carrara is not any more what it was, it's unhappy because, for creative artists which do not want to play with little programs very limited like DS, they cannot follow the evolution and will have certainly to be directed towards more coherent softwares like c4d and others.
But I want to remain Carrara' ist, it is for that I am in the search of plugins and scripts which make it possible to continue with this marvellous program.
Thank you for your tests !

sadly my last one failed to work as I forgot to parent the item to genesis before running the sim
the morph sliders for the cloth are there but no keyframes
it needs to be parented to the figure in order to bake them in the timeline

Nice try, but the back of the shirt appears, and is conspicuous and distracting. Dynamic cloth, as you probably know, is a very tine-consuming and arduous process. Cloth almost never behaves like you want it to. It has a will of its own. You have to have steel will and infinite patience. Even in high end apps, like Maya, you have the exact same problem, maybe even worse.

because I use the smoothing modifier on the geometry during and after freeze it always looks better in DAZ studio
I fix it a bit in carrara in the vertex room sometimes and adding displacement too helps.
mine was the V4 kimodo obi on Genesis Aiko5 and am rendering it in HF world gardens Japan so will be a while yet before video up
yes is not as good as my DAZ studio Octane render sequences as you will see due to lack of smoothing collision,
since I am adding other scenes to video too not using dynamic cloth I added a quick segment here
