not sure where to post this but I discovered something interesting 

Carrara doesn't mind transparency it's the transmaps it hates

if one can use transparency without a map it actually renders very fast so corneas and stuff don't use a map!

and candle flames etc use the map only in the glow channel not the diffuse or alpha make it transparent instead with a coloured glow I must try using the hair transmaps in a different channel to alpha too, I feel as though there could be a trick here to speed it up
