In LAMH, can I make my figure repel the hairs so they don't keep disappearing inside?

I'm having difficulty with the styling tools in Look at My Hair because the guide hairs keep disappearing inside of the mesh. Is there a collision setting I can turn on so that the mesh will repel the hairs or so that the hairs are only allowed to be on the positive side of faces?

Also, is there a symmetry setting in LAMH if I want to create a symmetrical hairstyle?
