Making a hat

I am wanting to learn to make clothing, so I had a go at making a really simple hat. Just a cone in Hexagon, correct size and position to sit of V5's head.
Import into DAZ, looks great. Used the Transfer Utility, declaring it as short hair, seemed the closest thing.
The problem is, the hat moves to the middle of the head instead of being on top. Apart from that it work well, the hat follows the head nicely.
I think I know what the problem is. The hat has a bone system which duplicates V5, but the mesh of the hat is in the centre of the head bone.
How can I move the hat mesh so that it is in a different position relative to the head bone?
I read something vague about the Joint Editor. I never used it before, but changing the bones doesn't seem to affect the hat.
I feel I am very close, can anyone give me a pointer?

Normally I import a basic Genesis or Genesis 2 into my modeling app and model to scale. If you do that it should be in the right place when you load it into DS and all you will need to do is parent it to the head. If you don't want to do that then yes you go into the joint editor and adjust your object axis.
You need to make your model to fit the base Genesis shape, not a morph like V5. You can model to fit a morph, as long as you are careful to make sure there is no dialled scaling applied, but then you have to use reverse Source Shape from target to get it to the base shape and for something like your hat that is likely to introduce unacceptable distortion.
Thanks, didn't know much about parenting, I will look at it.
I was really just trying to make a very simple item of clothing so I could try to get it working without hours of modelling. But a hat was probably not the right choice, I will have a go at a simple tee-shirt or something.
You should be able to just parent the hat and it will be fine. I'd try that first before doing anything else
