Here two exotic trees with removed roots in Mat Lab. The lower part of a trunk is executed in Sсulptris. On the left tree the krone consists of several Bryce Trees.
Not my nicest tree and certainly not very natural in this frozen ground even though it is rendered with natural light. I used Rashad's idea with the tapered cone and Alexey's idea with the height sensitive transparency. Thank you both, very helpful advice, indeed.
Rashad,
I am reading your post with great interest. I will try out what you describe and see how I get along. I am kind of learning a few different technologies at the same time, so to speak, so I may appear slower at learning or being able to work on everything at once. :) But I am paying attention. Thanks for your ideas as I see they work pretty darn good. Now let me get caught up!
Thanks,
theschemer
Not a very successful attempt to make the dragon-tree from Bryce tree.
File "dragon-tree.obp" can be downloaded here:

In the foliage is used property of transparency.
You can see the work with this tree here:

Realism is over rated. Bryce can also do this.
I could not download the tree model Slepalex posted above because I needed to install a downloading program. However I had some fun using the screenshot he posted, and playing with the preset materials. Thanks for sharing. :-)
CTippetts - cute, love it you had more fun than I did
