Using FOG as a means to differentiate elements in an image...
This and the no fog image...I am convinced you are a professional photographer Selinita. I'm working on a model for an image from a sketch that has this same "ropy arms" feel. Love it!
As a side; I've been reading William Vaughan's book on 'Digital Modelling' to get a better flavour for this skill I'm lacking in.
Thank you Selinita for the comparisons between Carrara's displacement mapping and Philemo's plugin. Cool!
Ooooh! Great book. William Vaughan is a genious - I love his software agnostic approach to modeling. Another book you and anyone here might be interested in is his "Pushing Points Topology Workbook". It is specifically about topology and making all quad models. Focus is on how to get out of trouble when you model yourself into a corner...of triangles, ngons and all the other horrid places you can suddenly find yourself when the goal is an all quad model.
Using FOG as a means to differentiate elements in an image...
This just looks cool. Not sure what you mean by using fog to differentiate elements, however.
I can't be certain but I'm guessing it's Distance Fog, which can be found when you select 'Scene' at the top of the Instances Tab, then in the Effects Tab you'll find Atmopshere>Distance Fog. Dial in your settings from there. Screen shot is set to arbitrary settings and fog color.
Can I ask a question about how you achieved some of the subtle blue colored shadows in the image? I have experimented in the past using custom mattes in post to drive shadow colors and values. Just wondering because Carrara's native lights (no GI / Indirect light fancy stuff) can be greyscale drabness, even with Intensity slider adjustments. Thanks
Edited to add: yes, I know we can add colored fill lights, but the color of cast shadows...
Thanks, TP Lightdomes is what I used for that with Carrara's realistic sky, I had to tone down the blue a fair bit for that.. you can't get them anymore I don't think from the store.. I think they were extincted.
the best lighting domes for Carrara, I use them for 99% of my renders with slight adjustments here and there. I dunno how new users can get them now

Il will soon upload a new plugin that allow to create light domes from HDRI.
Looking forward to that!!
spent the weekend learning how the hdr cam works on iphone,.
What you need are 360 panoramic images which can but need not be HDRi as well
what DAZ sells as HDRi are Panoramic 360 HDRi, a bit of a misnomer
HDRi simply stands for High dynamic range image and can be any lens type, my iPad does them too, it takes two photos at different exposures and combines them to get an inhanced image but it is Not a 360 panorama

+1
Great concept Bunyip! And I'm already digging the lighting. Nice!

Ha ha - great image as usual Stezza!

one can never have too many building blocks to play with

More Freebies!
Great additions by all. Will have to comment later. Have just enough time to post some freebies.
Meanwhile, in honor of our host, DesertDude, here are some building blocks for our structures. Build something spectacular.
These are great examples of over-modeling. Could easily assemble some cube and cylinder primitives, but the underneath?
In any case, here are some awesome structural pieces, because everything is awesome!
See attached zip file.
Everything is awesome.

its all better fluffified
fluffy dice, fluffy emu, hairy tomatoes, hairy cavemen
what structure to do next?
i'm blanking on deconstructing no lightbulb dings
watched the antman movies
but thinking the quantum realm would be like a biodome
no structures there just slug like critters lookin hungry
