Gel Resolution?

What is the upper resolution limit for an image applied as a gel in Bryce? Is this officially documented?
If that limit is exceeded, then does Bryce downsample the source? Also, if such a limit exists, then does it vary according to the Bryce version number? I've just googled this -- nothing relevant. A long time ago, I located one "opinion" -- and now I can't even find that!

This is not documented. Memory is the limit. Best strategy is to scale pictures to the size needed.
