Yes, where did you get it, Lord Ganthor?

Ha, it is! I was going to take a shot at a pool render, but can't match that. :)

Another question about OBJs (and actually any other props, now that I think about it): If I use a shader to retexture one, does it become a no-count item? The one I'm wanting to use in this case is a paid-for shader, so I'd list it with the purchased items, of course.

And another question, too: If a free plant comes in .3ds format, and can be converted to .obj or .pp2 with a free utility like PropViewer (http://www.sharecg.com/v/43389/), can it be counted?

With the .3ds file, you can use this free little program to convert the file to .obj format very quickly. This is a free program, so if you use a .3ds file in the challenge, you can list it along with a link to this little program for them to get to convert it to .obj format. We have done that before.

Just load the .3ds file, then click the .obj tab at the top, then click the convert button and save it where ever you choose.

You cannot redistribute any geometry files without written permission from the artist. However, if you will strip it out of geometry, and put instructions in the read me (link to the file, where to put it) I think it can be done. You do not need any special converting software since it can be done in poser/ds ( ds files can be only read by Daz Studio) .
As for stripping the goemoetry files http://www.vanishingpoint.biz/freestuff.asp?ClassificationID=30 , this is free utility. works only with obj.
Still it would be nice before taking any action to ask orginal creator of said object if they will consent ;)

A .pp2 file has the geometry inside the file. You can actually take a .pp2 file, change the extension to .obj and it will import into any app that supports .obj format.

Not sure if I should have made the changes in the sme post I alrady had or not, so ended up doing a new one ( *sorry in advance, bribes with cakes* )

The chocolate and strawberries were great, almsot tasted like the strawberries here on Gotland *winks* On to the changes, I did have both V6 and the genesis evoulotion morphs, so I pulled of Norma and put on Bree instead. And put the morph and the v6 amongst the paid for, put the bree skin amongst the no count (hopefully that was correct?)

As for the triangles, I have to admit I have no idea what you talking about *laughs* I can see the triangles when you havep ointed it out, but I honestly never actualyl think about things like that when I make a picture. Did do some changes though, for better or worst *winks* Personally I like it the way it turned out after the changes, even made the render slighter bigger this time *smiles*

I did try to put a backrest with some boulders I had, but it just didn't look good. So I am afraid she has to be slightly uncomfortable. On the other hand, in nature it isn't always easy to find a backrest so I think she will survive without *smiles*

Intro to the pic : “They claimed that I would never be able to make a personal garden up here in the mountains, I decided to prove them wrong”

Being a judge this month, I am going to go ahead and send you my entry gift because I think Dollygirl will accept this just fine. All your links work good. Can't believe you have the one to mortenvetus in there, I remember that site and I still have some of those buildings up in my runtime from years ago...hehehe. We will see what our lovely host says. Look in your pm box for my gift.

    Pros:

Everything here is in order. You have good placement, good shadows, good feel all together. Nice colors and a real "good morning" pose there with her scruffied up morning bed hair...lol. A superb render with very little flaws.

    Cons:

Can't really find much that isn't pleasent about this little mountain garden. Maybe you could have rotated the camera just a bit to the right and shown a little more of the mountains to cuddle this wonderful little "escape" up a bit. Some clouds would have been nice too, but you don't want to clutter it up, so maybe spread the tree group out a bit. Too much clutter in the upper right corner, too much space in the upper left corner. Maybe move one tree to the foreground. Also, I would have cut the opacity back about 25% more on the pond water making it more translucent, and not so cloudy looking. Giving it a fresher mountain spring water look. Such a nice little retreat. You did real good.

    :-)

    check your pm box.

I'm back! Did I miss anything?

    (goes and looks)

I see two very lovely entries there ... and I also see Dolly and Music have already offered some suggestions on them.

As for PropViewer, it converts 3DS to PP2 reasonably well. Here's xCalPro's free frog, converted to PP2 and rendered in Studio 3. No retexturing, lights, or background - this is just a "proof-of-concept" to show the quality of the conversion.

Now, the pie-throwing! (tosses a rosehip-jam pie at Dollygirl)

You missed! saved by that crazy frog. He jumped up and with his big long tongue snagged him some pie..
Who's frog is that? where did he come from. Never saw a frog that liked pies so much.

Thanks for this useful information about PropViewer, I didn't realise it could do that! (I've only ever used it to "see" an .obj file quickly). I have acquired several 3ds models from various free sources but never knew what to do with them (I'm a DS not a Poser user so far) so this is really interesting to hear.

    You're so welcome.

I just saw a little while ago that in the List of Plant Species by Genus thread, opal42987 mentions that some conversion programs don't convert material zones properly, which may explain the trouble I had with PropViewer and the fountain I so want to use in this challenge. *determinedface*

I've also found that often I have to assign the included textures myself in the Surfaces tab, but as long as I keep the images in the same folder with the obj, they're easy enough to find and sort out. And as opal42987 also mentions, sometimes the conversion knocks the geometry out of whack; I've found that happening with the legs of a few insect models, but not with any plants so far. And spaceships seem to fare pretty well. So I'm liking the program a lot. It's great to have a shot at being able to use the 3ds models I thought were out of reach. I hope it works with yours! Or PoseRay, the utility that music2u4u linked to. I'm going to try that one too.

A .pp2 file has the geometry inside the file. You can actually take a .pp2 file, change the extension to .obj and it will import into any app that supports .obj format.

    Did not know that. Interesting!

That is not neccesarily true nowadays Music, in fact, as regards Daz Props it is definitely not true of any props after a certain date

Most content makers externalize the geometry -- DAZ 3D requires PA's to do so, and ( b ) even if the geometry is internal, you still have to strip out the excess stuff for it to work as .obj

Nope. Guess again! Actually, it's a clip-art image I Googled and placed on a 2-D flat and put in place. The ones from optitex were the ones I was looking for, but couldn't remember where I saw them! Doesn't make any difference anyway...I don't have the dynamic plug-in...

You do have the basic plug-in. It comes with DAZ. You don't have all of the bells and whistle like the wind factor and a few other things. You can drape if you want to. You just have to remember to freeze it when you get it the way you want to. That makes a prop and it can then be imported into Bryce.

*3ds models converted to OBJ with PropViewer: http://www.sharecg.com/v/43389/. You can also use PoseRay (thanks, Music!): https://sites.google.com/site/poseray/.

Bushes, trees, grass, flowers, and ants multiplied with node instancing.

    -----------------------

Signature added in Photoshop CS6, no postwork otherwise.

Transparency maps for the xfrog and Nobiax models made with Irfanview (free image-editing software): http://www.irfanview.com/.

The xfrog models have alpha images for leaves and petals, but in what I've downloaded so far they're the negative of what's needed in Studio's opacity channel and have to be inverted. Any graphics program should do.

For Nobiax's bushes, the transparency.tga files made parts of some of the plants invisible, and I couldn't get the diffuse maps to work in the opacity channel (as I think he intended), so I made a jpg of the alpha channel of each diffuse map and put those in the opacity channels. I can upload them if it would save anyone the few minutes' time doing the same; they should probably be finessed with the gradations used in some of his transparency.tga files, but they're workable. After I rendered (naturally), I saw Dollygirl's DAZ Studio 3 Shader Preset for Bush01, which you can use as a template to make shader presets for the other four bushes: http://www.sharecg.com/v/65863/browse/21/DAZ-Studio/DAZ3-Bush-Shader-for-Yughues-Bush01-of-Bushes

Szark just posted a tutorial What Is a Transparency Map? in the New Users Help forum.

Very nice! A free-form garden. Looks like it will be watered soon, too, by the looks of that sky.

Thanks, Dana! I love the kind of light where afternoon sun is shining on buildings and trees but there are gray clouds beyond. Not sure if the clouds here are on their way, or passing by in the distance, but the garden will appreciate a rainshower if it comes.

Hello all, the entries are cool! Thanks for your kind replies. Mine is finished too, but I'd like to ask a few questions.
    - Adam Thwaites has limited time freebies - can we use them?
    - Do you know where is the link to a tree pack please? It was unnamed and contained a Weeping Willow, an Eastern Cottonwood and a Black Tupelo saved as pp2 files. I cannot locate it via the compilation list :(.
    - I used a barrel from "Wood Stuff" set from Teknology3D. When I got it, it was free, but as I searched now, it's priced $5.00 - should I count it as a purchasable?
    - Can I use Dreamlight's club freebies? These are available for newsletter subscribers and are featured in limited time freebie alert thread.
    - Adam Thwaites' MostDigitalCreations site's a great freebie provider, but the links fly over it and often change place when he updates them. Can I simply link to the main freestuff area please?
    - Mapps and RichardPhotos released an addon set for "The Bull King's Throne". It's divided into two parts: one requires the set from Rendo, but the other - which I use - is a standalone. Can it still count as a freebie or should I count it as a purchasable item?

I think you can link directly to any of the items on Most-Digital-Creations that have their own pages. He did that a while back and said we can link directly to those. The older ones, no, and never directly to the zip file, only to the page that it is on.

I'm not a judge or worker, but I think the standalone item, if it is in a freebie pack, can be counted as a freebie. In fact, even the part that requires the paid item would be a freebie, you'd just have to count the paid item as a paid item if you used that.

You do have the basic plug-in. It comes with DAZ. You don't have all of the bells and whistle like the wind factor and a few other things. You can drape if you want to. You just have to remember to freeze it when you get it the way you want to. That makes a prop and it can then be imported into Bryce.

I do? *blush* I really haven't poked around a whole lot in Studio 4.6 yet, just using it for set-ups for Bryce. This adds a whole new dimension to things, but...how do I access it? Is there a good tutorial about it somewhere? If it works sort of like it does in Poser, that I should be pretty easy to learn. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
