Morph terrain for tracks/footprints?

Is it possible to create some product that will create footprints or tracks (animal/vehicle) in terrain?
I know it can be done in postwork, and some vendors include Iray illusions of tracks, but I'd like to be able to lay out tracks in mud, sand, snow, etc for characters and vehicles, where the depressions are correctly shadowed, and following a path of my chosing.

This could be done for shallow tracks with normals and an Iray decal node. Actual displacement I don't know of a way to do universally.
Yeah, I've tried lots of things, including using shadow illusions with objects, like these tire tracks (which are .obj by Spacebones at ShareCG. Do a search for "tracks".)

if your terrain is subdivided enough you could use smoothing collision and invisible shoe meshes
