Characters and envoriment are Gray blocks

I've been using Daz 4 for almost a year, and I recently downloaded Daz 4.5. Everything has been running pretty smoothly, but now I've encountered a rather large problem; when I try to use my most recent downloads(characters, environments, etc.) they come in as gray blocks which slightly resemble the form of the character(for example, a human still looks like a bipedal figure, but it is just stacked, gray blocks).
When I double click on a figure to load it, or try to drag and drop, I get an error message which reads,
"Some assets needed to load the file were missing. The content may not work as expected."
And then a figure comprised of gray blocks shows up. I am really at a loss here. I thought I properly installed these items, as I used the new Daz Install Manager to do it. I do not think The install manager is the problem, because this problem existed before I downloaded the install manager.
Also, figures that were successfully downloaded in DS4(NOT DS4.5) still work just fine in DS4.5. I am afraid to uninstall and re-install, because I have large projects I am working on, and fear losing their data(I'm not sure that will happen with daz, since that doesn't happen with other programs).
I still have DS4 installed, could that maybe be the problem? It seems unlikely, but I'm not totally sure.
I really don't know what to do, and I am pretty sure this is a massive user error that I am overlooking. If anyone has a solution to this problem, any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

I've heard that DS4.5 and DS4 shouldn't be installed on the same computer, so that could very well be the issue. Also, have you installed Genesis Starter Essentials? It's a separate installer now, containing Genesis and other content that was previously included with the DS4 installer.

I get the grey blocks if I transfer a scene from one computer with the product installed to another computer that does not have it installed. I would verify that your product is installed and that DAZ Studio knows where it is. If you remember what product it is, try locating it in your content library to see if you can still access it (you should be able to right-click on the content thumbnail and browse to the file location.)

Yes, good point...it does sound like DS doesn't know where the product is installed. This might help you...it was posted in another thread:

If that file exists, then DS cannot see it. This means that you will need to make sure that your folder paths are set up correctly in the Content Directory Manager (Edit > Preferences or F2)

Find out the correct path to that particualr 'data' folder, and make sure that the library that holds it is listed as both a DAZ Studio AND Poser formats folder.

If the issue is that DS doesn't know where to find the files that DIM installed, see here for more information: https://helpdaz.zendesk.com/entries/23624648-Adding-Content-installed-by-Install-Manager-to-DAZ-Studio-or-Poser

will the blocks render and show their true form of what they were meant to be?
i wonder if you have not accidentally changed your viewport mode?
could you post a screen shot of these blocks?

No, nothing shows up in the render, and I've got a pretty good handle on view-port modes, and I don't know how that could possibly be the issue anyway.
I ended up uninstalling and reinstalling DAZ and found out that windows was for some reason not recognizing DAZ as legitimate software(I couldn't directly uninstall using the uninstaller, but rather had to delete my DAZ 3D folder). I think what was happening though with the gray block problem was that the DAZ Download manager(on my system at least) defaults to set up your library in your public documents folder. This was a HUGE problem, because even when I would use the content manager to relocate the directory, DAZ still would not find what I needed, even if I found it myself and linked it in through the content manager. ANYWAY, I uninstalled DAZ and all of my products, reinstalled the new DAZ 4.6, changed the configuration settings of my DAZ Install manager(the little gear icon in the upper right-hand corner) re-downloaded all of my products, set up everything in the same library, and now everything is running smooth. A couple of my DAZ studio files/scenes were corrupted, but I think it's because they were created in (according to windows for some bizarre reason) illegitimate software. So I have some tedious animation fixing in front of me, but now DAZ appears to be firing on all pistons, so PROBLEM SOLVED!
    Thanks all for your advice!

Go with what Scott said. I had the exact same issue this week and contacted Daz support. What Scott said fixed my issue.

I know this is an old thread but just in case someone is looking, I had the same problem with Genesis 8 (why 8, what happened to 4 5 6 and 7?). Anyway I had upgraded DazStudio and got the same result as the OP. In the end I uninstalled DazStudio, deleted all evidence of it and re-installed. That was actually quicker than soving the problem especially as I use DazConnect a lot.

Please guys, make sure you actually have installed the model you're using!!

In my case, I did not have Genesis 8 installed, that's why they showed up as grey blockmen
