    After this one, I can't wait to see how your other renders will look.  You know that you can enter 3, right?wink

    And that reminds me, we have about 3 weeks left to create renders for the Challenge.  Plenty of time, but it will disappear if you are not careful.  Time to get crackin'!

    Diomede, I cannot put my finger on 'why', but the BW kilt ones just didn't do it for me - just to be perfectly honest. Doesn't really look like a sketch, nor does it look like a render. It looks like a render trying to look like a sketch. Maybe that's what it's supposed to look like? But I think the suggestion you said you got was (maybe) because it's so subdued that it doesn't pop out and grab ones attention. Very light scratches on a white background.

    I certainly don't like being critical toward anyones art - ever. I really don't. But when you asked for constructive criticism about it, it compelled me to say something - for what it might be worth - which, perhaps, is worth nothing? LOL

    The actual imagery in the sketch looks cool. Just the effect... not sure what I don't care for about it. Too uniform for how scratchy it is, maybe? Hmmm....

    I wanted to work on something for this today, but my animation burnt my whole day from me - and I'm hoping it was worth it. Working on filming the animations of this part of the story - finally. I've been looking forward to this one!

    I wanted to work on something for this today, but my animation burnt my whole day from me - and I'm hoping it was worth it. Working on filming the animations of this part of the story - finally. I've been looking forward to this one!

    Dart, that looks incredible; I know it probably doesn't technically count as pinup art, but could be classified as 'Carrara porn' at least lol  laugh Hope you'll share the animation with us eventually.

    I hope so too! ;) Working on it. Going back to that thread pjotter made to inspire me has given me added sparks I needed to help fill holes in my story. I think I might be able to release a bit of a teaser on it relatively soon(ish)

    Below is a color version that composites Carrara's native NPR at 50% with the GMIC paint.  I think I like this best so far.  Need to address the white flecks, some of which are due to my NPR thickness settings, which is fine, but I think some are due to having the back of some normals visible in the woman's hair, 

     

    bottom one's a winner - in post just add another layer and change parameter to Darker Colour0 - then flood layer with that hairt colour and it will fill in the whites

    after Hans Bellmer once more - post work in Filter Forge and Oloneo HDR. I think Bellmer's idea was to push buttons while at the same time making us feel revolted by his concepts.

    This is V$ slightly altered - displacement mapped etc sorry meant V4

    PSE2018 so far has been working great... glad I didn't bother with updating to PSE15 so the extra additions from that update and this one may make it worthwhile to get..

    Still got 21 days left of the trial and haven't tried out some extra things with it yet but I'll probably pay 'em this week while I'm batching... mum's going to stay at daughter's for a while to help with new Grandson devil

    Ha ha, very clever MDO!  At first I was annoyed when you removed the artwork from the column, but then I noticed the new details.  Terrific idea.

    It does seem a bit blurry.  Is there some reason you applied a depth of field effect?

    I used a strong DOF effect on this for both artistic and practical reasons. Artistically I wanted to really focus the eye on the character's face. Hopefully the composition and lighting does that but I wanted to emphasize it. The blurring on the character gives a slight sense of motion and I think it also gives a little bit of a dreamlike feel to the surroundings.. Practically, the DOF hides the lower resolution textures on the pottery and helps the postworked wall carvings/paintings blend in to the rendered scene. You're right it is blurry - I am normally very much against such a strong DOF when you would not see that with a similar photo, but in this case I thought it was fitting for the image.

    I moved the column almost out of the scene because it was blocking some of the light effect I wanted and the color and detail level in the texture didn't quite match the rest of the image and I thought it was a little distracting. I left it just barely on the edge to help the impression of it, but really I should have either left it further in or removed it altogether - it's not great to have something that large right along the edge of the image like that usually, but I couldn't quite get rid of it entirely. laugh

    This render pretty much came out of nowhere.  I was working on another SCWarrior cover, when I thought about trying some different G'MIC filters on it.  I toyed with a few, then opened one up from the Artistic tab, called Lylejk's painting.  At default it was pretty vague - seemed a bit Van Gogh-ish - but with a few tweaks it suddenly got my attention.

    I particularly like three things about the filter, beyond the Van Gogh swirl effect.  First, it pushes the contrast.  I was doing that before in PSE by calling up different layers, but with this filter I can now do it in Carrara.  Second, I'm always looking for a way to give NPR characters a black outline.  This filter does that, and also gives luminous outlines.  Check out the plants in the lower right.  There is NO LIGHT on them, but the filter assigned them a luminous outline.  Pretty cool!

    Last, there is a canvas texture slider right in the same filter.  In this render it was at 35%, but if you really want to crank it, it can be very strong.

    There is a nice little review of a few of the filters here from a Gimp perspective.

    Attached are the WIP render, the Carrara original, and the Carrara scene setup.  It was done mostly in Carrara.  Nothing was rocket science.  PSE was used to turn the G'MIC logo into a PNG, to crop a NASA nebula photo into a portrait-sized backdrop texture, and to also do some minor touch-ups with burn, dodge, smudge, and liquify (love those tools).

    The character is not V4.2, but instead V4.1, using Morphia morphs.  The outfit is part of Earth Warden, and the critter is a Pteranodon.

    Dart - appreciate the feedback.  If I didn't want it, I wouldn't ask for it.  Now I have to figure what to do!  Have gotten some suggestions in the NPR thread so will be giving it thought.  Appreciate your honesty.  Seriously, the only way I am going to get better is if people offer critiques and make suggestions.  yes

     

    The recent plugins by Philemo make doing custom toons much easier because of the hair style converter and VWD bridge.  So, I made a quick pinup figure.  I call her Philamina in honor of Philemo.  Her tattered dess was draped on the figure using VWD, made possible in Carrara with Philemo's plugin.  The hair started as a dynamic hair and then was converted to prop using Philemo's plugin so that it would work better with a toon filter.  

     

    Philemina will be the star of my 3rd entry (Halloween theme).  Werewolf hunter on phone is #1 (PR), and Scottish Frahm is #2 (NPR), I made a lo res version and a hi res version.  This is the hi res version.  I think she is cute, in an evil witch sort of way.

    EDIT:  By "made a hi res version" I just mean that I hit the "convert" button on smoothing.  The extra vertexes come in handy when morphing.  Even the hi res version only has just over 8,000 polygons.

    Philemo, you are more than welcome!  You, and a few others, are now the Carrara developers for the foreseeable future.  No amount of thanks can express my appreciation for your amazing efforts.

    Stezza, love the vibrant colors and overall composition!  You are the master at having a lot of stuff going on, yet it all seems very natural.  Very cool font as well.

    MDO, thanks for the logical explanation.  I suspected that you would have some good reasons.  My feeling is that the figure is already a strong focal point without the need for blurring it, - and that the blurry hand expecially distracted me - but I may be in the minority.  Either way, really well done!
