Product for embroidered names and rank badges on clothing

Would love a product that would allow me to add an 'embroidered' look name tag to the uniforms and trousures of chracters. Also the ability to add badges of rank would be awesome.

    Assuming that the program suggested by Cris produces an image of the required decal, you could add this to your clothing texture map and also use it as a bump map. Or create a normal map from the image. I believe there are programs (perhaps free) that will create a normal map from a texture map. I haven't tried it but it should work in theory.

    I second Serene Night's request. Isaac, I use your method often for nametags, unit patches and such. My issue with that method is that it often stretches unreliably during movement or morphs. Plus, I often have to severely deform the image to match the seam-patterns or repeat. On one, I had to split my image in half and put each half at opposite ends of the clothing texture.

    Thanks for the suggestions. Often the ranks I want are missing from sets. Sergeant for some reason, I rarely see. I have seen hats for officer though. 

     Perhaps some sort of decal ability would work. For example, would love bars and nametages for the Genesis 3 Army uniform. I have tried adding letter myself but eh, I lack the talent for convincing stitcher especially certain angles

    Yes, I created the logo and then used the add-on to make it look embroidered.  It does a really nice job and you can make a normal map from it with a few different programs.  There is even an online one; if I can find it, I'll post it.  As with bumps, normals, displacement, you may need to tweak your b/w version to tell the program what heights are with greyscale.  Using levels and layer adjustments (Photoshop), you can make the maps as you need.

    @ Etrigan. yes I see your issue. If the clothing deforms due to a morph then so will your decal. The only way to avoid that as far as I can see is to have the decal on a patch. A piece of mesh separate from the clothing but attached; a geograft?

    This would mean that the decal would be rigid and independent of any bending or folding of the clothing which could also cause problems. What you would like is a map to define a part of the mesh which is stiffer than the rest and so less bent/distorted by a clothing movement morph but not entirely. A kind of normal map for sensitivity to applied morphs... sounds complicated!

    One problem is that, at least with the modern US Army combat uniform (I don't know if this would apply to other countries or not) the patches are actually not physically part of the uniform, but rather are held in place by hook and loop fasteners (aka Velcro).

    The Velcro idea might solve some issues. If the modeller could create the velcro on the uniform, and parent an editable patch for it, That might work, though only for combat fatiques. Dress/duty uniforms are still sewn on.
