I believe what I'm wanting to do is called a alpha channel.

I want to remove any background from a image so that it can be used as a tube or stamp in a photo editing software.

I am using both paintshop pro 6 and Gimp.

If you render with Draw Dome off (for iray) and save as tiff or png then any areas of the render that don't have geometry behind them will be black in the included alpha channel.
