Question for Windows users

WonderlandWonderland Posts: 7,057

I'm a Mac person but I also have a Windows laptop. All of a sudden, today, I can't log into Daz in Dim or DS itself and none of my content is showing up in smart content. I got this pop up and no idea what I'm supposed to do. Any help deeply appreciated!

  • Daz's content manager (the smart contents pane) uses a database to store all the so called "meta data". This is extra information which the system uses to keep track of relationships (and more). For example: a certain piece of clothing which can be used with Genesis but not with Genesis 2. So when you have Genesis selecting in your scenery then this piece of clothing can show because it's compatible. All this data is stored in a database, powered by PostgreSQL.

    So what is happening here is that for some reason Postgres isn't starting, and therefor your program can't connect to the CMS. And that's why your contents pane is empty. Keep in mind though that this should not affect the "Content library" pane. You can check that one to make sure that you can still access your physical contents.

    First rule out the obvious: I don't assume you ran out of diskspace or something?  Also: open the 'Help' menu, hover over the "Troubleshooting" section and you should get an option "View logfile". That might also give you some hints as to what is going on. You should be on the look out for something like this:

    2017-02-21 05:30:36.828 Creating Asset Manager...
    2017-02-21 05:30:42.815 Connected to CMS: PostgreSQL 9.3.4, compiled by Visual C++ build 1600, 32-bit
    2017-02-21 05:30:45.547 Creating Authentication Manager...
    2017-02-21 05:30:45.594 *** Scene Cleared ***
    2017-02-21 05:30:45.625 Loading plug-ins:

    Something you can try: right click on either the Smart content pane or Content library pane and try using the option "Start CMS".

    Keep in mind: all this is assuming that things used to normally work, and that you didn't recently upgrade (for example from version 4.2 to 4.9 which would include manage changes, including the CMS).

    Hope this can give you some ideas.

    Thanks, but tried the CMS thing, still doesn't work. It was working before, no upgrade or anything. Windows updated virus definitions so it may have quarantined Postgres but I have no idea how to unquarantine it. I don't have any virus software installed except whatever comes with Windows. Also only a small portion of my content is in the content pane and under products that usually lists everything alphabetically, there is nothing...

    This was in the log file:

    Those error messages mention 'cloud' - do you use Connect to install/manage content?

    I get that message periodically when I start DS. Closing it and restarting DS again resolves it for me.

    Have you managed to get it working again, Wonderland? If not, try this: with DAZ Studio open, Press the Ctrl, Alt and Del keys on your keyboard all at the same time. You will then get a list of options on the screen with Task Manager usually listed at the bottom. Click on that. You will get a Popup window with Task Manager running inside it, with a number of tabs along the top (it usually opens with the Applications tab selected, showing what programs are open). Instead, click on the next tab - Processes. Scroll down the list presented, looking for postgres.exe. There may be more than one instance of it there, if it is running. If it is not shown in the list, it hasn't started and that is why DAZ Studio cannot access the data. Tell us what you find. If we can get that far, and it isn't running, we can look at what is preventing it from starting as DAZ Studio is opened - either it has become corrupted, or something else is blocking it.

  • You can also open Task Manager by right-clicking on the Task Bar
