Change of format for Daz products-more web based

I doubt this will ever happen, but I think it would be really cool if they would do this. The thing that really annoys me about Daz is that once you purchase something, you're essentially stuck with it. Yea, you can return it within thirty days, but once that happens, you're stuck with the purchase for good. I can understand why they do this (to avoid fraudulent purchase, download and copy to flash drive) and then return so that way you get your money back and still have the item. I came up with this idea to allow for more returns of items that you don't want without dealing with the potential for fraud. If Daz studio were a web based program instead of a client based, I think this would alleviate the problem. You purchase characters the same way, and then you do whatever in Daz on an online application. That way there won't be any downloading to your computer so you can't fraudulently copy and paste the items to a flash drive. Therefore, you can exchange one item for another if you want to.

Ouch! One good scene set-up in DAZ would eat all my bandwidth for the month. :)

If Daz3D were to close down, you would have NOTHING.  Current method works great as is.

  • I Doubt Daz would change a business model that has been working great for years and is successful. For the most part, people are respectful and realize they are paying for content that they want in the first place, so I don't see your argument for fraud as a very legitimate one. Not saying that it doesn't happen, I'm sure it does, but it is probably quite rare amongst most buyers in the Daz marketplace.

But I like having my old runtimes.   I keep them on external drives, so when I change Computers I can just plug the externals back in.  And yes I have 2 one backing up the other.   I already had problems with one back up external dieing and leaving me without access to some of my downloads, as of course some of the stuff on that external came from sites that fell by the wayside, like 3dCommune

Plus of course I don't use DS   And I don't like cloud computing.

How would you render if you didn't have anything on your computer? In the cloud? That would cost a fortune.

Not to mention the many users, personal and business, who do not let their computers go online. No thanks, if I've bought it, I want it on my hard drive. And my backup hardrive. And the hard drive I store elsewhere in case my house burns down...

  • I can't see any way doing it like this would actually solve the problem — if it actually is a problem, which I doubt. And what about people with low-speed or bandwidth-limited connections? They'd be either completely locked out, or have to pay through the nose for shooting way over their bandwidth cap. And then there's the privacy concerns, and, and, and...

Sorry, but this is another "I think it would be really cool if..." that just isn't a good idea.

    Oh HELL no.

This may come as a surprise to you, but there are still people in the world without unlimited high-speed 24/7 internet access.

    What he said. ^

  • Unfortunately, because scenes take up such a massive amount of resources and space, such a cloud based system wouldn't be effective at all. Most browser based animation platforms that I have seen are very limited and is intended for simple animations, or rely on prefab animations that someone can add their own stuff to, but nothing that comes close to what a 3D creator or animator would need. Cloud systems are used in teams on a project where 3D items and sets can be accessed, but the work is done on individual computers.

I have it, and it is still a Hell no.

I don't want a rental system; that imo is what DRM products are, it's just one doesn't know when the license is going to get pulled. I don't want to wait for it to download, and then where the hell does it get rendered?

I like to own it (although technically we don't, but are not restricted on access); I like to look after it myself, and store it because, well internet connections fail.

A "Hell no!" from me too.

I love the internet, it's wonderful. Really!  But I don't want to be forced to be connected to it whenever I want to do something on the computer.
