I have no idea if this is the right spot to post this or not. Anyway I am looking for a seamless texture generator, similar to Genetica, only free.

Suggestions? Ideas?

FilterForge is "almost free", very cheap http://www.filterforge.com/, but I don't think you can get that kind of software free.

    Star Books:

Well, depending on your needs, and expected end results, there are a few free programs that I use in concert that do a pretty good job. At least for my needs with texture/seamless tile creation for use in the Poserverse.

They are by far not Genetica, nor FilterForge, but you can achieve similar results (to an extent) if you are diligent, and patient. The key is to experiment, play, practice, experiment, play, practice, experiment, play, practice, and then, rinse-n-repeat.

Here are some for you to check out to get you started:

*NeoTextureEdit - Genetica/FilterForge style node based procedural texture editor. Has ability to create Normal Maps (I have created normal, specular, bump, ambient occlusion, and displacement maps with this alongside the diffuse map), and also has an included OpenGL 3D viewer to see the fruits of your labor instantly:

    http://neotextureedit.sourceforge.net/index.html

*MapZone (By Allegorithmic) - Another free procedural texture editor, but it seems Allegorithmic has completely pulled the plug on this, and only offer their newer paid-for professional suite. Look around, you might be able to still find a download-able copy somewhere. It is definitely worth it to at least try and acquire a copy. The last version was 2.6:

    (Sorry, no link available)

***Here are some other programs that might interest you, and when used with the apps above can produce some decent results:

*ShaderMap CL - Normal/Displacement/Specular/AO maps creator from diffuse map free command line version (you write the execution code, and execute via BAT files). It is pretty easy with great documentation on how to create the executable files:

    http://shadermap.com/

*sTile - Great tiler/editor to help with your creations. Many great uses:

http://www.harmware.net/stile.htm (don't be alarmed by his production/studio name. No "harmware" about his creations. I think he was "young-n-dumb" when he came up with his coding studio name. It has been around for many years, and I have never seen anyone reporting any problems)

*Kali - (unofficial) tile creator. Lots of possibilities for tile creation. You can create base tiles to build upon elsewhere, or you can play until you have something to use as a final. You can also create seamless tiles with careful set-up (application window), or utilizing alternative solutions:

    http://www.geometrygames.org/Kali/index.html

*Illusionae - Tile creator/editor. Lots of great tiles can be created to use with the other programs, or as finals by themselves:

    http://www.atomixbuttons.com/illusionae/index1.html

*Semicuro - texture creator. I find this one requires some patience, and a lot of experimenting, but can be useful:

    http://semicuro.sourceforge.net/

There you go. I hope this helps.

    Take care...
    Ken

Almost free? The cheapest version is $89! Besides, it requires that you have PhotoShop CSx, doesn't it?

No, there is a Photoshop addon version and a standalone version where you can save outputted in the standard formats. You get a thirty day free trial that allows you to make and upload filters, and if enough people like your filters, you get points which earn you coupons to reduce the cost of buying the full version (or even a free version). I'm guessing that's what the previous poster had in mind.

No it is a standalone application, and if you download the 30 days trial, create some great filters that you submit to the filter Library and people use them, you will get points for every filter reaching high usage, 3 points = Free FF Pro, 8 Points = Free lifetime license.
So it is free, as long as you give something back.

I knew nothing about FilterForge three years ago when I found it. I have got almost 40 HU points so far for the 90 filters I've uploaded, it took about 4 month before the first HUs came rolling in (HU = High Usage Point).

Most texture creating programs work via a "filter" type method... it is not same but if you have Gimp (free) or Photoshop you could, with a little practice learn to make many of the effects found in these texture makers.
Geeks At Play has some pretty cool tutorials on how to make some textures using image editor filters.
That said... did you see the free version of Genetica? You can't alter the textures much, but using an image editor you could alter and combine textures generated it.
    Genetica Viewer:
    http://www.spiralgraphics.biz/viewer/download_viewer.htm

    Texture packs:
    http://www.spiralgraphics.biz/packs/index.htm

    Wood Workshop (pretty cool):
    http://www.spiralgraphics.biz/download_ww.htm

The free version can render the texture pack tiles as is without be able to change more than Size, Seed,Hue, Saturation and Contrast

As far a FilterForge is concerned (my favorite), If you keep checking on them, there will likely be a sale of 50% or 60% off... They seem to have them frequently. It's not free but, pretty damn good for FilterForge.

BTW... What type of textures are you most interested in? Textile, Organic, Structural (metal, wood, stone etc..)?

Cool, Usually you don't get $300+ programs for free, that easy. But then, maybe you're just good at making filters... :)

My own filterforge case is a bit different from Totte's...I made and uploaded 5-7 filters in my trial period ( you can find them under the handle odadune), and two years later the very best of those, the one I was most pleased with, earned me enough points for a 20% coupon (haven't used it yet, money's a bit tight). So yes, people who truly understand building filters from nodes and creating useful, interesting things are more likely to get themselves a free Filterforge or two (or four or five...) but even mediocre filter builders with one or two good ideas will ultimately reap the benefits if they only put those ideas into action.

lordvicore brings up a good point, and I second his recommendation. I use those as well, and they will help as those will go a long way to help in base creations which you can modify into original creations.

I left out other key (free) programs I use in my creation pipeline such as GIMP, SmoothDraw, Inkscape, MyPaint, and IrfanView (I use heavily with PS5 filters, and a plethora of freely available filters out there in conjunction with sTile), because the OP seems to want a free alternative that closely resembles Genetica. Photoshop 5 is also in my pipeline, but is not a free alternative.

These are all good to help with texture/tile creation, and I recommend those starting out, or needing free solutions to check them out as well.

    larsmidnatt, and Fay68:

    You are welcome.

    Take care all...

Wood Workshop is really a small corner of Genetica. It's very simple to use and has a huge number of options.

I was happy to get Genetica because Wood Workshop was such a good program (and it was on sale at Cornucopia3D). I made these woods with wood workshop (rendered in Vue as I have that open but as seamless tiles they will work in anything). There are also more complex patterns to make decorative woodblock floors.

One thing to note. Beware a program called Texture Maker 3. It is not very expensive (about $35) and is excellent but ... the person who made and sold it seems to have vapourised and there is no support. It was being sold at another site called Game Creators but no longer probably because several people paid and never received licenses.
