Thermodynamics.  Failed it twice.blush  Had to get advisor to waive it & substitute something so I could graduate.frown

I just could not GROK Thermodynamics, I couldn't find the patterns in it [see note].  It all seemed to be long equations without sound, bottom-up derivation, just a bunch of rules discovered by accident, experiment, and approximations.  It also didn't help that I wasn't that good at differential equations.  So, yeah certain things like thermodynamics and sports game fanatics are complete mysteries to me.indecision

Note:  That was back in the late '60s, perhaps they've properly quantized Thermodynamics by now, and have a more derivitive explanation of it.  But at this point in my life I just don't give a shxt.  Got along fine without it for the last 55 years.wink

    Worried Query:  Where's McGyver?sad

McGyver said something about disappearing for a while due to the new DAZ advertisements becoming a bit unbearable.

A tracker just insinuated itself on my computer.  While I  was reading the forum messages!  This is the only page that could have done it.  I have only one other tab open, and they don't use trackers or ads of any kind!

A tracker meaning what? A cookie, or actual executing code? A cookie might come from an ad.

I don't recall that ever happening to me. If there's one thing I can do, it's ponder.

If there's one thing I can't do, it's math. And probably that thermodynamics thing.

All I know is what you see in that image...it was the warning from Norton.  After I saved the screen capture, it went away.

An ad is one thing, but placing anything on my computer that tracks my activity is troubling.  And there is already far too much of that going on already.

Yeah, winter here did that rather abruptly.  Didn't get to enjoy much of the nice almost summery weather as my allergies slammed me about as fast and hard as a speeding TGV between Paris and Marseilles. Was in absolute in misery for four days because of all the tree pollen.  Never been hit this bad before. Now that normal Portland "spring weather" is back (50s and drizzle) I've been feeling  better.   Guess I'm finally a true Oregonian now.

That was part of the reasson Ii've been MIA for while.  Another is the super depressing not very fun time pursuit of mine I cannot discuss here.

Speaking of Automated Intrusion, I found that to completely disable the W11's "Copilot" assistant, I have to mess around with the registry.   Not very thrilled about that.  .

The happiest country with some of the least happy people I have ever met. It's a weird dichotomy, but of course the report doesn't actually measure how happy (as in content) the person is. Last time I checked it's based on a cantril ladder, so it actually doesn't ask how happy you are, it asks "how would you rate your current situation compared to the worst and the best you can imagine". The average annual sample size is also about 1000 people for each country (so 3000 in total because the survey covers 3 years). Like by default it's affected by the sample size, biassed in that people who reply to it are likely to be people who in general respond to surveys, and I'm not even sure if the people being surveyed are randomized.

It doesn't even ask "are you happy" and then summarize the answer. The answers are collated to six factors (levels of GDP, life expectancy, generosity, social support, freedom, and corruption) and compared to hypothetical Dystopia which is the average of the worst performing countries. You know, things that measure quality of life rather than how happy you as a person feel.

This leads to a situation where you have people who are often perpetually discontent, have high suicide rates, high domestic violence, and problems with substance abuse (i.e. alcohol) BUT still have high quality of life compared to others - aka they are "happy".

I wonder how such surveys cope with countries like the UK where the population is never happier than when they're complaining about something, or preferably complaining about lots of things? And there's often a competition to be the most miserable, most downtrodden & hardest up in any group. A common greeting seems to go

    Greeting: "How are you?"

    Response: "Alive & Kicked".

    Regards,

    Richard

But, If you're happy all the time how do you know?  One needs a little misery in one's life for comparison.enlightened  That's why I suggested a flood of visitors to Finland.  A point of comparison.devil  I lived in Florida for half my life.  I know about tourists.no

I personally don't think that matters or that it's even true. I mean if you are already happy (as in content) what would misery give to you? I don't think that knowing misery is beneficial even to people who are unhappy because it often comes in the form of "I'm unhappy now but at least there are people who are even more so" or "I shouldn't be unhappy because everything is good in my life (by comparison to some previous bad event)" and those thoughts are really only going to increase your unhappiness.

It's similar to how people say that "working hard" somehow elevates a person and makes them appreciate what they have more, but it way too often just leads you being overworked and miserable and sloppy and wanting more (especially if your hard work barely makes ends meet) - and possibly connecting your value as a person to your work and some arbitrary metric like how much money you earn.

I mean sure if you have worked yourself to a burnout, you can learn to appreciate a slower and healthier pace more (says I cuz I have been there), but you wouldn't need to do that if you hadn't overworked yourself in the first place. Maybe instead of working hard it would benefit people to work smart!

I found this interesting thing on a streaming platform.  It has this guy who was in one of the Harry Potter movies.  I think the actor's name is David?  I can't remember the name they gave David's character. Do you know his name?

    ...complaint.  auto logouts.

Not fond of seeing the "Signing you out" message in general, but really detest it when It appears after I just click on a thread that has a dozen or two new responses since I was last here. as afterwards after signing in, the software considered that you already read all the new posts in that thread and takes you to the last one.

Other complaint:  #5 seed Wisconsin was knocked out in the first round in the "sports ball"  version "March Madness" which is going on, by #12 seed James Madison    #2 Seed Marquette barely made it by #10 Colorado after leading by 11 points at halftime. (low numbers in "seeding" are good  high ones are bad).

Non complaint:  Allergies have finally subsided totallty only because rain has washed all the pollen out of the air for now.

Still finding myself tired at midday becuase of all he naps I took while I wans't feeling well which totally disrupted my sleep schedule.

Two years our healthy robust tax accountant met the love of his life online and travelled six states to meet hr and her adult children. Last year we texted our accountant and he seemed really off . . . Yesterday wetexted our tax accountant a message to his cell phone, 'hey when should we shoot our taxes your way' and signed it from both of us (no last names). But instead of a typical reply like: next week, tomorrow, or anytime, we got a message from his new wife. The message was directed at me, not us, saying call me. I have never met this person . . . so I didn't. Now she's sending frantic messages to call by this day at 5 pm. So I'm thinking, why no response from him . . . is he dead? I google the accountants name and obituaries and sure as S**t he is. Died in January 2024. And what really bothers me is this: she has his cell phone. He used it to send PDFs of tax records. She has all our tax info. She as every other clients tax info. Sure hope that family is more honest than they look in online pics. Maybe I watch too many forensics shows . . .

I suppose the moral of this story is don't send your clients' tax documents through text messages. On the other hand, I send all kinds of stuff through text messages that I wouldn't want just anybody to see. Maybe there is no moral to this story. I have a lot of stories like that.

Ran into a similar problem with my dad's accountant. She died during a heart operation last November. My dad was in a care home and my step brother who was looking after his finances also died. I live 300 miles away, so clarifying the situation in person isn't too easy. Regards, Richard.

So many Youtube tutorials for Houdini are done by people with heavy accents who don't seem to make much effort to speak clearly speaking into low-quality mics like they're trying not to wake up their partner in the next room. This is before we even get into how effective these are as tutorials, which varies wildly, with many hovering in the area of "helpful if you already mostly understand how to do this". I really need to buckle down and start making some Houdini tutorials.

And Life Goes On:  Laundry day again tomorrow.  Yay, another chance to get out of town and visit the big city.  Wheee, a bus trip, laundry, a drugstore visit, breakfast at BurgerKing, an Uber ride, and another day on this side of the ground.  What more could an transportless, single, old man want?indecision

...here our brief taste of summer (and for myself allergies) came to an end but it's still much more seasonable than a couple weeks ago, Rain and upper 50s is more the norm this time of year here and this weekend there will be another bout of pleasant sunny weather ahead (may need to get some Claritin™ just in case as leaves are beginning to pop out on the trees).

Thursday is supposed to be particularly ugly (49 and 17 - 20 mph winds) but have no plans to go anywhere. After that it will be in the 60s until the middle of next week with lots of sun.
