How to get DAZ 4.6 to see files after a system restore

I not sure if this is the correct forum, but I will give it a shot.
I had to refresh my laptop, Win 8.1, and as expected the C drive had most of the installed programs removed. That in of itself was not the problem.
I had all my DAZ files in the public folder on my D: drive, which was good. I reinstalled DAZ 4.6, and here is the trouble, DAZ did not see all the files. I thought there would be an easy way to get DAZ to see the files. I tried to import and that didn't work. I wound up uninstalling the files and started the long task of reinstalling.
My question is?? How can I avoid the long process of reinstalling?? I have a full backup, but try to avoid restoring because of the fact that if crap is backed up the crap will be restored.
Many Thanks in Advance
Larry

When you say "DAZ did not see all the files", do you mean that your Content Library or Smart Content panes don't list your content? If so, did you back up and attempt to restore both your content database and your list of known content folders to that last known backup and that's not working, or have you never make these backups?
The list of known content folders, if small, can be manually re-entered if not done, though of course you need to know what to enter. The database backup if not done perhaps can be fudged by manually copying all the files that the database uses, not sure. Using the old Valentina database in a custom location I've done this AS the backup in the past, not sure about the new database though, or what to do if you are using the default locations or changed locations or if DS is already starting to use a new database location.
As I said I prefer to not restore from backup, especially if the data files are still present. I don't know squat about databases. Since I used the default locations it seems that there ought to be a way to have DAZ do a refresh or search for existing files. I realize it would most likely be a manual process to tell DAZ where to look.
I also don't believe I am not the only one to have had this problem, at least since 8.1 came out.
Are you not seeing the files in Content Library > DAZ Studio Formats and Content Library > Poser Formats, or in the Smart Content pane? If the former, go to Edit > Preferences > Content Library > Content Directory Manager, expand both "DAZ Studio Formats" and "Poser Formats", and make sure that both sections list the location of your content. After that (or if it's just Smart Content and Categories), Content DB Maintenance > Re-Import Metadata.
Thank you very much, I believe this is the answer I am looking for. I am sure I will be using this info very soon on my desk top.
Again Thanks.
